2026 Rustic Canyon Weekly Thursday Evening Loop
An energetic evening loop covers about 4.7 miles through the neighborhoods of Santa Monica and Rustic Canyon, taking in sunset views, hidden stairways, and several bridges. Expect 13 stairways with roughly 706 steps up and 330 down, and a total elevation change of about 801 feet. The pace is brisk yet suitable for those new to stair walking, with short pauses at the tops of stairways to bring everyone back together. The route can vary based on historical stops and participant input, with brief stories highlighting local architecture, historic homes, and landmarks such as the Marquez family Cemetery, La Señora Research Institute, the Marquez Filling Station, the canyon’s one-room schoolhouse, and the Secret Bridge. Bring a flashlight or use your phone’s light, as it will be dark by the end of the walk during much of the year. Plan to arrive early to handle parking, and be mindful of meter limits and lots that charge until sundown. Public restrooms are available near the start, but there are no planned restroom stops once the walk begins. Snacks and drinks can be found nearby, and there are restaurants in the area for anyone interested in dinner afterward. No RSVP is required. This walk is typically led by Dave and Kristy Moorman, or another regular if they are unavailable. Participation is at your own risk, and leaders and helpers assume no responsibility for attendees. A sweep may walk at the rear to help keep the group together.

Presented by the Hollywood Heritage Museum with the Motion Picture & Television Fund and the Mary Pickford Foundation, this exhibition shines a light on more than a century of mutual support within the entertainment community. Through photographs, archival materials, and video, it follows MPTF from its silent era roots to its work today assisting actors, writers, directors, craftspeople, crew members and many others behind the scenes. Set in the Victoria Horne Oakie and Jack Oakie Gallery, the presentation features rarely seen pieces from MPTF’s archives along with personal mementos contributed to raise funds for the organization. A preview selection that includes crew jackets, crew gifts, movie posters, awards and more will be on display, and some items will be offered for purchase to benefit MPTF’s ongoing mission. Conceived by Mary Pickford together with industry leaders Joseph M. Schenck and Reverend Neal Dodd, the Fund was created to help members of the motion picture world facing illness, hardship or personal crisis when few formal safety nets existed. Over the decades it has grown into a widely respected charitable institution providing financial assistance, healthcare services, social support programs, case management, residential living and compassionate care for thousands of professionals and their families. MPTF is the only organization ever to receive the Academy’s Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, presented at the 93rd Oscars. The museum’s own history intersects with this story, as artists and craftspeople represented in its collections, including those connected to the Lasky DeMille Barn, have relied on the Fund in times of need. These films invite viewers to slow their pace and give primacy to ideas over plot. They shift between humor and austerity, restraint and unpredictability, precision and openness, rewarding close attention and creating space for contemplation or even a dreamlike state. Experiencing them in full within a dark theater setting allows for deeper focus and appreciation. As Chrissie Iles has noted, Ono’s cinema is fundamentally conceptual, engaging with the body, time, impermanence, repetition, measurement, and language, and it activates the viewer as a participant. The works carry a performative charge, reflect on their own materials, and question the notion of an autonomous artwork, aligning with currents that would shape Conceptual Art and structural film and connecting to Fluxus histories alongside ideas articulated by Henry Flynt and experiments in music by artists such as La Monte Young. Leimert Park Jazz Festival presents Sunday Jazz at The World Stage as part of the 2026 Monthly Concert Series, spotlighting Jamael Dean. A composer, pianist, producer, and multidisciplinary artist, Dean weaves together jazz, hip hop, ancestral traditions, and experimental approaches. His credits include work on Kamasi Washington’s Heaven and Earth and collaborations with Carlos Niño, Laraaji, Zeroh, Josef Leimberg, Charlie BeReal, the Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra, Keturah, and Shin Sasakubo. As a leader and solo artist, he has released projects such as Black Space Tapes, Ished Tree, Oblivion, Primordial Waters, Convergence, and Oriki Duuru, and he co-composed the 2024 film Waterboyz. The program opens with a set by the host band, followed by an open jam session. General admission is $15, and musicians participating in the jam are $10. The World StageScreening: Acting Like Women

Artistic Director and dancer Yaelisa presents guest artists Pedro Cortes and Jose Moreno reuniting with guitarist Jason McGuire "El Rubio" and singer dancer Reyes Barrios for a traditional program that favors spontaneity and close artistic conversation. The cast includes three second-generation flamenco artists, creating a rare moment where legacy and lived experience drive the music and dance. Pedro Cortes, from a renowned Gitano lineage that emigrated to America and helped grow flamenco on the East Coast, is a second-generation guitarist and composer respected for collaborations with major artists in the United States and Spain. He and Jason last shared the Fountain stage in 1998 when Deborah Lawlor brought them together as a guitar duo. Jose Moreno, a singer and percussionist who also plays guitar and dances, returns after a 2025 appearance and comes from a flamenco family with roots in Spain. Yaelisa has been a fixture since the early Forever Flamenco years, following in the footsteps of her mother, Isa Mura, a favorite in the series under Deborah Lawlor. Jason McGuire, longtime partner and composer for Yaelisa & Caminos Flamencos, regards Pedro as a mentor and close colleague. Completing the ensemble, Reyes Barrios of Sevilla, director of the current Forever Flamenco series, adds voice and dance. Together they offer pure flamenco powered by trust, history, and shared artistry.

Curious about how a movie is written? This hands-on workshop gives students a chance to dream up characters, shape a central problem, and collaborate on a brief scene for the screen. Working in small teams, participants learn the basics of screenplay formatting and then watch actors bring their words to life on stage. By the end, each group will have helped build an original story and see it performed. The session is led by screenwriter Thomas Heegaard, who writes for film and television and guides stories from script to production.

It is designed to welcome newcomers to stair walking while still delivering an under two hour challenge for experienced hikers. The route may vary to include short stops that highlight local history and architecture, with potential sights such as the Marquez family Cemetery, La Señora Research Institute, the Marquez Filling Station, a one-room canyon schoolhouse, and a Secret Bridge. Bring a flashlight or use a phone light, since it will be dark by the end of the walk during much of the year. Arrive early to find parking and reach the start, as the walk begins promptly. Plan to use restrooms beforehand, since there is no scheduled stop once underway. Snacks and drinks are available nearby, and there are restaurants in the area for a post-hike meal. This activity is led by Dave and Kristy Moorman or another regular leader. It is a rigorous outing, so participate only if in good health. Cousineau is an award-winning author of more than forty books, including The Art of Pilgrimage, The Hero’s Journey, and Once and Future Myths, with over two dozen scriptwriting credits. His work spans writing, teaching, filmmaking, storytelling, and cultural history, and he has advised studios such as Warner Brothers, Pixar, and Lucasfilm on myth and story. A protégé of Joseph Campbell, he began by teaching Myth and the Movies at the American Film Institute in the 1980s. He has been featured on NPR, CNN International, and National Geographic TV, and he hosted PBS’s Global Spirit for ten years.
