Rueda in the Park celebrates 22 years of sharing casino and rueda de casino in an outdoor setting, a concept that has inspired communities around the world. This anniversary gathering brings a Cuban-style fiesta to Santa Monica and Los Angeles, with dancing, food, music to sing along to, and the company of casineros, salseros and timberos. All casineros and salseros are welcome. A class taught by Tania will offer a refresher on moves learned in the past. The annual tradition continues with ladies leading and men following in a special rueda, so both leaders and followers can get ready for the switch. This is a potluck. Bring something already cooked to share and plan for enough to serve about 15 to 20 people, since cooking on site is not possible. No alcohol is allowed under Santa Monica rules. A coordination list will help everyone see what others are bringing to avoid a mountain of chips and cookies, and attendees can note their contributions when they RSVP. Bringing change for parking meters or using flat rate parking is recommended. Supplies and dishes are needed, including plates, utensils, napkins and cups, with around 100 of each suggested for anyone signing up for those items. Main and side dishes are encouraged such as potatoes, frijoles negros, rice, yucca, salads and other international favorites, along with meats like pork, chicken, beef or fish, and drinks like water, juice, soda and lemonade.
