    Brain on Yoga Training

Soul of Yoga Institute, 701 Garden View Ct, Encinitas · verified Sep 27
    See details

A comprehensive training offered in person, by live stream, and as a recording explores how the brain develops, adapts to life experiences, and how yoga can support people across the lifespan, including those affected by traumatic brain injury, autism, and Alzheimer’s. The program is designed for teachers and therapists seeking practical, science-informed methods for working with neurodiverse communities. An opening module with Amitice Lisa Saremi, MA, LMFT, C-IAYT, pairs Yoga Shadow Work with nervous system education to shed light on protective patterns rooted in earlier experiences. Through practice, participants learn ways to settle activation, expand capacity, and meet shadow material with clarity and compassion. The session offers concrete approaches for supporting clients in integrating this material while honoring the scope of yoga therapy. Dr. Linda Chamberlain, C-IAYT, presents on brain development in children and adolescents, highlighting how mind body practices nurture healthy remodeling during sensitive periods. Content covers the brain’s pathways for stress and fear and why compassion based practices and interoceptive skills belong in classes for preschoolers and young children. Simple micro practices and take home tools can be shared with caregivers and kids, and playful teaching aids such as puppets help children understand how their brains work. Participants also reconnect with their own inner child through meditation, journaling, and small group conversation. A hands on children’s yoga session with Shannon Ramo, C-IAYT and preschool teacher, demonstrates how age appropriate yoga can bolster early brain development, support emotional processing, inspire imaginative movement, and cultivate healthy community skills. A three day immersion with Shawnee Thornton Hardy, C-IAYT, SEP, author, RCYT, RYT-500, M.Ed., Educational and Behavioral Specialist, focuses on yoga, autism, and neurodiversity. Learn inclusive, accessible ways to share yoga and mindfulness with people who have diverse needs and backgrounds, including neurodiversity, disability, sensory and communication differences, motor challenges, anxiety, depression, and trauma. Guidance is provided for weaving yoga and somatic movement into school, therapeutic, and home settings to build resilience and capacity, with benefits that include increases in self awareness and regulation, confidence, social skills, body and sensory awareness, coordination and motor skills, attention, focus, learning, and behavior. The training concludes with a day on brain longevity led by neuroscientist Stephani Sutherland, PhD. Modern neuroscience is integrated with teachings from the Yoga Sutra and guided practice in asana and pranayama. Participants examine core neural physiology and cumulative risks to brain health with aging, including contributors to chronic pain and neurodegenerative disease, and explore lifestyle and behavioral approaches to build resilience from the cellular level. Topics include stress, sleep, and social factors that influence health. Tuition is $1,000.

San Diego Civic Theatre, 1100 3rd Ave, San Diego · verified Sep 25
    See details

This dark comedy spotlights Mary Todd Lincoln in the tense weeks before Abraham Lincoln’s assassination, revealing her stifled longings, dependence on alcohol, and buried desires. Told in a single act running about 80 minutes, the play unfolds through playwright Cole Escola’s deliberately foolish perspective to reimagine a largely overlooked chapter of Mrs. Lincoln’s life. Praised by The New York Times as one of the standout comedies of recent years, it won two Tony Awards, including Best Direction of a Play for Sam Pinkleton. It also earned Drama League Awards for Outstanding Play and Outstanding Direction, received a special citation from the New York Drama Critics’ Circle, and was named a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

    Tire Rack Street Survival

North Island Credit Union Amphitheatre, 2050 Entertainment Cir, Chula Vista · verified Sep 27
    See details

Tire Rack Street Survival is a real world, hands-on driving program for teens that focuses on vehicle control, smart decision-making, and quicker reactions. Students use their own car to understand its handling limits and to build awareness that helps them anticipate the behavior of other drivers. The day blends classroom learning with in-car coaching and runs as a full program from start to finish. In the classroom, students spend roughly two hours across three sessions covering proper seating and hand position, mirror setup, the tire contact patch, weight transfer, looking far down the road, and overall situational awareness. The discussion also addresses common distractions such as music, phones, and carrying multiple passengers. Lunch is provided for students, parents, and volunteers, and educational demonstrations may be part of that midday break. On the driving course, each student practices with a coach in their own vehicle through real world exercises. Activities include managing skids on a wet surface, rapid lane changes for hazard avoidance, threshold braking with ABS, and a slalom that highlights weight transfer. When possible, additional drills cover recovering after two wheels leave the pavement and maintaining safe following distances. Some locations may set up a semi truck with parked cars to illustrate blind spots from the driver’s seat, and there may be a live airbag deployment to reinforce proper hand placement on the steering wheel. Parents are welcome to spend the day with their student and may sit in on classroom segments. Instructors are available throughout the program to answer questions about what participants are experiencing. The course fee is $175.

The conversation spotlights Mission Trails Regional Park, where these elusive cats still move within miles of the center of San Diego, underscoring what is at stake as the region grows and warms. Using Mission Trails as a case study, speakers examine more than 8,000 acres of protected open space that support mountain lions, bobcats, coyotes, mule deer, and other native species, and discuss how habitat restoration, invasive-species management, wildfire prevention, and long-term land protection can help wildlife adjust to increasing heat, drought, and other environmental pressures. The program also highlights the partnerships behind this work, including the City of San Diego, park rangers, scientists, nonprofit partners, volunteers, donors, and community members, aligning with San Diego Climate Week 2026’s theme of Unity and emphasizing shared responsibility for natural spaces that benefit people and wildlife. Hosted by the Mission Trails Regional Park Foundation, the nonprofit that supports the preservation, protection, and enhancement of the City-owned park, this free public event requires registration. 25 Hour Yin Yoga Foundations Training

Soul of Yoga Institute, 701 Garden View Ct, Encinitas · verified Sep 27
    See details

A 25-hour Yin Yoga Foundations training with Joe Barnett at Soul of Yoga Institute presents an introduction to guiding a practice of surrender, with attention to the Caterpillar and Saddle archetypes. The format is hybrid, offered live online with small breakout groups and in person in Encinitas, CA. Participants study five archetypal Yin postures along with their primary target areas and adaptable variations, engage in interactive anatomy work to identify skeletal landmarks and explore range of motion, and learn to discern different types of sensation such as tension versus compression, muscular versus fascial, and physical feedback versus subtler energetic signals. The curriculum also introduces a functional approach to teaching and Paul Grilley’s Yin Yoga Sutras, then moves into foundational sequencing, why these sequences are used, how to modify them, and the basics of building new ones. Each Yin Foundations course includes brief analysis of all five archetypes, and this training devotes extra time to the Twisted Tree module, emphasizing the spine and its discs, the sacrum, the outer hip, and the shoulder girdle, with posture analysis focused on anatomy and function. Throughout, the practice centers on stillness and letting go, with shapes held for several minutes so resistance can ease and deeper connective tissues can be safely stressed and rehydrated, while offering deep rest for the body and a quiet refuge for the mind and heart. Early bird tuition is $450 and the standard rate is $550.

The Barony of Calafia celebrates its New Year’s Harvest anniversary with a theme inspired by the Navajo season of Gháájí', meaning half, a time that marks the shift between summer and winter. This moment also aligns with the first new moon and the close of the harvest, and attendees are encouraged to show their harvest best as Calafia’s new year begins. The day includes lysts and both an opening and a closing court at Their Excellencies’ leisure. Adult Event Registration is $25, with a $15 Adult Member Discount. Youth under 18 attend as guests of the Barony. Cash and checks are accepted at gate, and checks should be made payable to SCA Inc./Barony of Calafia. A county fee of $3 per car, cash only, is collected at the park entrance. Combat competitions in Armored, Rapier, Cut and Thrust, and Youth combat will determine the next Baronial Champions. Archery and thrown weapons will not be held at this anniversary, and will instead take place during the Calafia Equestrian Championship in December. Activities feature the Dirty Dozen Largesse Competition, the Taste of Calafia brewers competition, a special mini archery range, and more. Additional details will be shared on the event page as they become available. For the Dirty Dozen Largesse Competition, entrants create twelve coordinated items suitable for largesse, for example a dozen needle books, twelve hats drawn from one or multiple periods, twelve items tied to a specific era, or a dozen children’s toys. Items that normally come in pairs should be submitted as twelve pairs. Each piece should be tagged with the item type, the artisan’s name and province, and be ready to be gifted that day. No documentation is required, and items should not carry heraldry. Voting is by populace token, with a cup placed by each display. After votes are counted, the top entry selects three items from any of the submissions as a prize, then the remaining entrants choose in order of finish, with each entry chosen only once. The other eleven items from each entry are given to Their Excellencies for future largesse. The Taste of Calafia, hosted by the Calafian Brewers Guild in the spirit of the Potrero gathering, welcomes entries that are fermented beverages such as ales, meads, or ciders, or non alcoholic drinks to comply with site rules. Cordials and mixed drinks are not permitted. Each submission should be at least 22 ounces. Organizers ask prospective entrants to share their plans in advance to help anticipate numbers and styles, and questions are welcome. Calafia Archery presents a mini range hosted by Order of the Mark Vigilant Ronan de Bhal as part of a wandering vigil. All ages can try a few shots with suction cup arrows and rubber band bows, no experience required, simply a willingness to have fun. Lunch is prepared by the Willie family clan and its matriarch, offering a modern take on comforting homestyle foods suited to the seasonal change. Vegetarian options will be available, water will be on hand, and participants should bring their own feast gear. A $10 suggested donation supports the meal. Site notes include a damp site policy. Smoking, including vaping, is prohibited on park grounds. Pets are welcome and must remain leashed at all times. Groups from visiting baronies planning to bring a pavilion should contact the event stewards in advance to arrange space.
