Bread & Roses and KC Turner present Shawn Colvin as part of the 13th Annual Cookout Concert Series, a benefit for Bread & Roses at HopMonk Novato’s outdoor concert venue. The three time GRAMMY Award winner and celebrated songwriter has released thirteen albums over more than three decades, received the Americana Music Association’s Lifetime Achievement Trailblazer Award in 2016, and entered the Austin City Limits Hall of Fame in 2019 alongside Lyle Lovett and Buddy Guy. She continues to tour around the world while working on new music. This event is supported by sponsors JAMBAR and Rue de Rêve Apéritifs. Most seating is on the ground level, with limited spots on the lawn and at the top of the hill. It is an all ages show, and children need a ticket, with no infants in arms permitted. Seating is limited and available first come, first served, and low back chairs are allowed in the lawn area. Table seating at the top of the hillside is also first come, first served. Some shows in the series may be standing room or open dance floor while others are mostly seated, and this one is primarily seated on the ground level. Parking is free and ample. Pets, coolers, backpacks, outside food, and umbrellas are not allowed.

The set draws on a cocktail of styles that includes Wreckless Western, bug-eyed ballads, heat-butting rockabilly, suicidal blues, and hayseed boogie-woogie. The original lineup featured Country Dick Montana, Jerry Raney, Joey Harris, and Rolle Love, and their shows paired music and mayhem with an extra dose of stage presence for a distinctive live experience. This event is mostly standing and limited to ages 21 and over.

TRES MORTIMER brings his Chicago-based DJ and producer sound to Halcyon SF for a night of music with support from NILE and MIAMI PETE. This is a 21+ event, with doors opening at 10:00 PM.

Guided by Jeni Swerdlow, MA-ATR, founder of DRUMMM Rhythmic Events, the session is designed for everyone, whether brand new to drumming or highly experienced, and is open to all ages, cultures, genders, and abilities. Catch Hairspray, the vibrant, feel-good musical set in 1962 Baltimore. Tracy Turnblad gets her chance to shine on “The Corny Collins Show,” and uses her newfound fame to challenge segregation on the program. Expect colorful characters, big musical energy, and an uplifting story about self-expression and standing up for what’s right.

KC Turner presents a matinee performance by The Rubinoos at the HopMonk Novato Session Room. This show is partially seated and open to all ages. Friends since junior high, Jon Rubin and Tommy Dunbar began performing together as teenagers in Berkeley and soon signed with Beserkley Records alongside Jonathan Richman and Greg Kihn. Their self-titled 1977 debut brought them national attention, with critic Gene Sculatti hailing it as the best pop album of the decade. Over time the band has released numerous records while collaborating with Todd Rundgren, Kevin Gilbert, and most recently Chuck Prophet. They have built an international following, sharing stages with Elvis Costello and Tom Petty. Their music has appeared in films and television, they made their TV debut on Dick Clark’s American Bandstand, performed the title theme for Revenge of the Nerds, and their Top 40 single I Think We’re Alone Now opened the third season of the Netflix comedy Sex Education. Now signed to Yep Roc Records, home to artists such as Nick Lowe, Dave Alvin, and Chuck Prophet, the group continues to bring power pop to audiences across the United States, Europe, and Japan.

All In Song Circle in Marin offers a relaxed, drop-in gathering in San Anselmo where voices come together on easy, non-religious community songs taught entirely by ear. Everyone is welcome, there are no auditions or sheet music, and the focus is connection, feeling well held, and singing without pressure or perfectionism. This session features guest songleader Lyndsey Scott, visiting from Iowa. She is a multimedia artist, songleader, and ritualist who explores community singing as a practice of belonging. As co-leader of Earthkeeper Wisdom School, she helps steward A Year in Ceremony, a 10 month apprenticeship in sacred space holding. A songcatcher, she records singalong pieces centered on collective liberation, and her project Over/Under with incarcerated musician Tony Rhodd shares a path of grief as activism, imagining a world beyond prison. She weaves community and tends her garden in Iowa City.

At Club Cali, FloLab hosts a weekly $300 rap writing contest and cypher devoted to keeping Bay Area Hip Hop rooted in its people, politics, skill, and community. It is a steady home for the culture, where MCs hone their pens, the audience has a real voice, and the room belongs to the community. Artists, writers, listeners, and neighbors are welcome, and you do not need to rap to take part. Expect a blend of contest rounds and open mic energy, centered on craft, message, and authenticity. Contest topics and beats are announced on Instagram. Competitors write one verse for each beat, with hooks or choruses allowed, and memorizing verses strengthens a shot at the top spot. Audience response helps decide the outcome, and the cash is split across the winners with $150 for first place, $100 for second, and $50 for third. People come for authentic Hip Hop culture, a growing Bay Area community, topics that reflect real life, and a space where MCs can develop, test, refine, and perform their work. The audience shows up ready to listen and engage. Organizers are also working toward expanding this model into San Francisco and San Jose and are seeking monthly donors to sustain the movement.
