Tango dance classes with Anahí at La Bruja: beginning and intermediate
Visiting from Buenos Aires, Argentine tango artist and educator Anahí leads beginning and intermediate classes in Berkeley. Her approach blends rigorous technique with a lively, active pace, drawing on her role as a professor at the National University of the Arts and a deep understanding of tango’s social tradition. Instruction focuses on figures for the social floor and clear lead–follow communication, and no prior experience is needed for the beginner session. Classes use the terms leaders and followers and welcome queer, trans, and non-binary dancers, and participants are encouraged to explore both roles. Each session begins with check-in, then a beginner class, followed by a shared practica, an intermediate class, and a final practica. Practicas are included with admission, and the first practice time brings beginners and intermediates together. The intermediate level is geared toward dancers with at least three months of experience, and newcomers are welcome to observe that portion. All sessions are planned for the ballroom, and the room reservation may change. Pricing is $25 for a single class at the general rate, $15 for students with ID for a single class, or $40 for one person taking both classes the same evening. Payment is accepted in cash or via Venmo at the door. Anahí Carballo is a master teacher, choreographer, and director with more than two decades of international experience. She founded Estudio Tango Cuir, led the all-female Compañia Tango Entre Mujeres for a decade, serves on the faculty of the National University of the Arts, and holds distinctions that include a Provincial Malambo Championship and a semifinalist placement at the World Tango Championship. FloLab - $300 Weekly Rap Contest and Cypher
FloLab champions authentic Bay Area Hip Hop, pushing back against gentrification that has diluted and displaced cultural spaces. This weekly gathering creates a true home for the art, where MCs hone their skills, the audience’s voice counts, and the culture remains community led. Artists, writers, listeners, and community members come together for a $300 rap writing contest with open mic energy in a room shaped by substance, style, and truth. Participation is open to rappers and non-rappers alike, so anyone can watch, vibe, and connect with a community determined to keep Bay Hip Hop from being pushed out. Contest highlights include one verse per beat, with hooks or choruses allowed, and memorized verses offering the strongest edge. Win the room to take home the prize. Awards are $150 for first place, $100 for second, and $50 for third. People attend for genuine culture, a growing Bay Area network, weekly prompts rooted in real life, a proving ground where MCs can build, test, sharpen, and perform, and a crowd that truly cares. Organizers are also working toward expansion into San Francisco and San Jose and are building monthly support to keep the movement thriving.

This is not ecstatic dance or yoga. It is a structured, layered practice that moves participants through the breadth of who they are. Expect Brazilian Zouk inspired movement with circles, spirals, and hip articulation, tantric somatic work such as pelvic floor release, breathwork, and awakening the senses, meditation and ritual focused on the sacred feminine, and primal, expressive movement that welcomes what does not need to be graceful. There is also attention to the nervous system through sound, stillness, and practices that help reset the vagus nerve. It is especially supportive for givers who long for a space that is just for them, for those called to slow down and let the body lead, and for anyone in a season of transition or creative becoming who needs a container for both softness and fire. No dance experience is required and there is no performance element. Come as you are. Many participants leave feeling free, wild, empowered, sensual, creative, and deeply connected to pleasure and power. The Itals
The Itals make a welcome return for an evening of roots reggae. Donny Rasta and JAHBUDDA! Band are on the bill, with additional local reggae artists and DJs to be announced. Celebrated for a sound grounded in authenticity and clarity, the group first broke through with In A Dis Ya Time more than three decades ago and has continued with the same creative focus ever since. Through the 1980s and 1990s they released three studio albums and several singles collections. Give Me Power reached number one on the CMJ reggae chart in 1980, and Rasta Philosophy, the final release featuring original members Porter, Lloyd Ricketts, and Ronnie Davis, received a Grammy nomination for Best Reggae Album. Their tours have spanned Europe, Canada, and the United States, and a new album titled Let Them Talk is planned for later this year. Tickets are $25 in advance or $30 on the day of show. Students can purchase a $20 ticket at the door with a valid student ID. This event welcomes all ages, and children 12 and under are admitted free unless otherwise noted.

Guitarist Steve Freund, praised by Rolling Stone for his clear, unfussy approach, has appeared on more than 50 recordings and holds seven producer credits. In 1978 he became Sunnyland Slim’s primary guitarist and worked closely with the piano legend until his passing, later accompanying piano greats including Pinetop Perkins, Jimmy Walker, Henry Gray, and Erwin Helfer. Wendy DeWitt, a leading boogie woogie stylist, performs at festivals and teaches across the United States, the Caribbean, and Europe. Her career includes touring with Hank Ballard and the Midnighters and collaborations with artists such as Joe Lewis Walker, Big Time Sarah, and Otis Rush. Kirk Harwood has toured or recorded with numerous notable roots, blues, and rock musicians, and is widely known for his enduring partnership with DeWitt.

Born in Halifax and raised in Southern California, now based in Nashville, he tours constantly and is often a festival standout. His shows carry a playful streak, including tongue-in-cheek jokes about being a lawyer for dogs. This concert takes place outside at HopMonk Novato. It is an all-ages event, and every child needs a ticket, with no lap-held infants permitted. Most seating is on the ground level, with limited availability on the lawn and at the top of the hillside. Seating is first come. Low-back chairs are allowed in the lawn section, and tables at the hilltop are also first come. Arriving when doors open is encouraged. Depending on the performance, the setup may be standing room or mostly seated. Parking is free with plenty of spaces. Pets, coolers, backpacks, outside food and umbrellas are not allowed. Training covers inside and outside turns, double spins, the 360 and Hand Toss, intricate patterns like the 360, wrap, and Cross Body Lead variations such as the U-Turn and Spiral, along with footwork and styling including Suzy Q, Front Tap, and Mambo Step. Posture and upper body movement are part of the curriculum, as well as styling with a wrap. A partner is not required, as rotations make sure everyone gets to dance. Weekly trivia happens at Dog Haus Berkeley every Tuesday. It is free to play and no registration is required. Teams compete for prizes, with a soft limit of seven players per team for prize eligibility, and larger groups are welcome though may not receive top prizes. The event typically lasts about two hours. Solo players are welcome, and the host can often help connect individuals with other participants or a friendly team before the game starts. There are no games on major holidays.
Dog Haus BiergartenPixels Pinfest Summer 2026 League Play/Week 2
This event is part of a fast paced four week pinball league featuring five rounds of group match play. Drop-in participation is welcome. Entry is $10, allocated as $5 for entry, $4 to the prize pool, and $1 to IFPA, plus coin drop. The league runs for four weeks with finals in the fifth, and players must take part in at least two tournament nights to be eligible for the finals. Pre-registration is encouraged, and registrants are asked to note the tournament date they want and include their IFPA Player ID. In-person sign-ups are available before play begins. FloLab hosts a weekly gathering devoted to protecting Bay Area Hip Hop from gentrification, centering the people, politics, struggle, skill, and community that built the culture. It is a room where MCs sharpen their pens, the crowd’s voice carries weight, and the culture stays with the people. Each week, artists, writers, listeners, and neighbors come together for a $300 rap writing contest with cypher and open mic energy focused on substance, style, and truth. Performing is not required to attend, and many arrive to listen, watch, and connect with a community determined to keep Hip Hop rooted in the Bay. Contest guidelines include following the organizers on Instagram and checking posts for the current topic and beats, reserving a spot through advance registration, reading the full rules online, and preparing one verse for each beat. Hooks and choruses are allowed. Memorizing verses is encouraged, and the crowd decides who wins. Prizes total $300, with $150 for first place, $100 for second, and $50 for third. Organizers are also working to expand into San Francisco and San Jose and are seeking monthly donor support to sustain and grow these culture-first spaces.

Their upgraded lives begin to come apart when the payments stop and the consequences arrive. Staged in LaVal’s Subterranean Theatre beneath La Val’s Pizza, the production features Claire Renoe as Gretchen, Rachael Richman as Regina, Alan Coyne as Rich, David Ghilardi as Ted, and Natalie Tichenor as Cindy. The creative team includes costumes by Vanessa Price, set and lighting design by Nate Bogner, stage management by Jose Garcia, and production and technical direction by Jerome Solberg and AnneJelika Ong Cortez. NextGen’s monthly dance comes to Allegro Ballroom, combining instruction with an evening of social dancing hosted by DJ Allie Sparkles. Two concurrent lessons are offered. Cameron Crook leads a session intended for dancers already familiar with west coast swing fundamentals, while a separate beginner class, with an instructor to be announced, welcomes newcomers and those reviewing the basics and includes time for social practice. The night features a Mix and Match contest in the Jack and Jill style that is open to all levels and to any lead or follow role regardless of gender. If two All-Stars or higher draw each other, the pairing will be adjusted. Randomly matched partners are judged together over three to four songs. This contest is part of a progressive series, and finalists will be invited back to compete for complimentary passes to the annual Boogie by the Bay. Finals are planned to take place just before Boogie by the Bay 2026. Pricing is as follows. General admission is $25 for the lesson and dance or $15 for the dance only. The Sailing Goat restaurant next door offers dinner before the show, and The Knot Club Kitchen will serve a small selection of dinner options on site. Marty O’Reilly’s songs draw on the roots of Americana, with echoes of folk, blues, gospel, and storytelling traditions, nodding to figures like Woody Guthrie, Howlin’ Wolf, Sister Rosetta Thorpe, and Tom Waits. His voice and guitar work move from hushed intimacy to energized intensity, with a focus on direct, heartfelt expression. Hannah Mayree (they/them) is a banjoist, multi-instrumentalist, producer, and vocalist whose work explores folk history while looking ahead. Their performances feature original and traditional banjo pieces, harmonies created through acoustic live vocal looping, and moments of community singing. Following the 2017 release Thoughts of the Night, they are approaching a second studio album and continue to perform solo, in small ensembles, and with a full band. Their practice highlights Black string tradition, blends genres, and curates culturally grounded experiences that speak to the times. They also founded and creatively direct the Black Banjo Reclamation Project, which cultivates musical, cultural, and land-based opportunities for Black and Afro-Diasporic communities to engage the banjo as a tool for reconnecting with ancestral knowledge and imagining Afro-futures. Twelve VIP tables for two are set at the front for $150 and include a special gift from Marty O’Reilly as well as a signed copy of his latest vinyl record titled The Rhinefarm.

The program begins with a slide presentation inside the museum, then continues with a two mile walking tour, with a one mile option, that visits notable historic sites around the old installation. The route is largely level, with a brief steep hill near the end. Discover how an Italian chef named Salvatore helped bring an air base to Marin, hear tales of wildlife repeatedly outwitting a base commander, and learn about a Native American commander from the Osage Nation who was honored with a song in his language that is still performed. Find out why a lieutenant general and a lieutenant colonel each chose to put women pilots in charge of ferrying different aircraft, and uncover unexpected ties to Abbot and Costello and the Dalai Lama. His live shows are widely known for their impact, from intimate rooms to major stages such as Hardly Strictly Bluegrass. He has appeared twice on Austin City Limits and continues a long running residency at The Saxon Pub that has reached year twenty. His body of work includes more than a dozen albums with another on the way, over a thousand songs, and creative pursuits as a published author, painter, and collage artist, all while maintaining a touring schedule of more than a hundred performances each year.

NextGen presents a monthly west coast swing dance at Allegro Ballroom, offered in coordination with South Bay Dance Fling. The evening starts with two simultaneous lessons, including a session with Austin Kois for those who already know the fundamentals and a beginner class with an instructor to be announced designed for brand-new dancers or anyone who wants a fundamentals refresher. Social dancing follows with music by DJ Kathleen Sun. Pricing is available for a range of attendees. General admission is $25 for the lesson and dance or $15 for dance only. Learn the basics of Cuban salsa in a four week beginner series with instructors Eric Celestino and Abigail Celestino. Sessions begin with a warm up, continue with rhythm and step exercises, introduce partner technique, and finish with short combinations to apply the material. Emphasis is on clear technique, coordination, flow, and natural expression while building confidence and a strong foundation. The goal is to help participants dance salsa with timing and connection, not just memorize steps, for a comfortable and joyful experience. At Dominican University of California’s Angelico Concert Hall, the Marin Dance Festival gathers a diverse lineup of choreographers and companies for a wide ranging program. The showcase features contemporary dance by Deborah Slater and Roco’s Body Language, contemporary ballet by Babatunji Johnson and Charmaine Butcher, Christina Johnson, and Casey Lee Thorne, Kathak by Charlotte Moraga, bellydance by Carem Love, Latin rhythms by Fernanda Cedeno, classical ballet by the Marin Ballet Youth Company, and jazz and hip hop by Love2Dance All Stars and Shooting Stars. Established in 2025 by Casey Lee Thorne, the festival was created to present high level dance in Marin, elevating and connecting the many perspectives within the local community while embracing international and cross cultural collaboration.

The 4th Annual Opera in the Hamilton Amphitheater presents an evening of selected pieces honoring the 150th anniversary of Puccini and the 270th anniversary of Mozart. The performance features baritone Richard Alexandre Rittelmann of the Opéra National de Paris with coloratura soprano Shawnette Sulker, lyric soprano Raeeka Yaghmai, mezzo soprano Deborah Rosengaus, and lyric tenor Vicente Alvarez Maire, accompanied by pianist and music director Alex Katsman.
