    See details

Yoshi's Oakland -Jack London square presents an appearance by Teddy Riley, the visionary credited with shaping New Jack Swing and influencing contemporary R&B, hip hop, gospel, soul, and pop for more than three decades. A Grammy winner and multi-platinum producer with over a thousand credits, he has worked as an artist, songwriter, producer, composer, arranger, engineer, and music and technology expert. His leadership in the studio helped create Michael Jackson’s Dangerous, a global bestseller that moved over 40 million copies and set sales records. Honors include recognition from the Hip-hop Hall of Fame, the Songwriters Hall of Fame, the Soul Train Legend award, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Riley’s path began with early breakthroughs on Doug E. Fresh’s The Show and, at 17, Kool Moe Dee’s Go See the Doctor, which reached the Billboard Hot 100. He helped ignite the New Jack Swing era with Keith Sweat’s Make It Last Forever and the hit I Want Her. He co-founded Guy, further cementing the sound with a blend of hip rhythms, R&B progressions, and gospel-inflected vocals, and produced standout moments like Big Daddy Kane’s I Get The Job Done along with projects for The Jacksons, the Winans, James Ingram, and a celebrated remix of Jane Child’s Don’t Wanna Fall in Love. He guided Wreck-N-Effect’s Hard or Smooth and the smash Rump Shaker, discovered and signed the Neptunes, and later formed Blackstreet, delivering favorites such as Don’t Leave Me, Girlfriend/Boyfriend with Janet Jackson, Eve, and Ja Rule, and the Grammy-winning No Diggity with Dr. Dre and Queen Pen. His songbook also spans Guy’s Groove Me, Let’s Chill, I Like, and Teddy’s Jam, Johnny Kemp’s Just Got Paid, and Bobby Brown’s My Prerogative. He has also contributed his technical expertise to companies like Yamaha, PreSonus, and AKAI, helping shape creative tools used across today’s evolving music landscape. This event highlights a trailblazing legacy that continues to resonate across popular music.

    Tracie Spencer

    Yoshi's , 510 Embarcadero West, Oakland · verified Aug 7
    See details

R&B vocalist Tracie Spencer appears at Yoshi’s Oakland, bringing a career that began in early childhood to the stage. She started singing at three and modeling in pageants at five, directed her first music video at ten, then won the junior vocalist prize on Star Search in 1987. Soon after, she became the youngest female solo artist to sign with Capitol Records. Her self-titled debut introduced singles like “Symptoms of True Love,” “Hide and Seek,” and a version of “Imagine.” At 14 she released Make the Difference, which delivered “This House,” a Billboard Hot 100 top 3 hit, along with “Save Your Love,” “This Time Make It Funky,” “Love Me,” and “Tender Kisses,” which reached No. 1 on the R&B chart. She toured with New Kids on the Block and other major acts, served on the Children’s Defense Fund board with Hillary Clinton as a teen, received the Martin Luther King Christian Leadership Award, and earned an Image Award nomination. While still in school, she created a 50-city Stay in School tour encouraging students to focus on their education. Her work extended to television and film, including a Family Matters appearance performing “Tender Kisses” with Darius McCrary, a moment that later gained new attention on TikTok. She recorded for soundtracks such as “I’ll Be There for You” for Good Burger, “The Rain” for Down in the Delta, and “Don’t Slip Away” for projects including Super Mario Bros. and Girlfight. In fashion, she modeled for Tommy Hilfiger, Chanel, and Dollhouse, appeared at New York and Los Angeles fashion weeks in 1999 and 2000, and signed with NEXT. Her third Capitol release, Tracie, went platinum and featured “It’s All About You (Not About Me),” which went gold, and “Still In My Heart.” She has also contributed vocals for artists including John Legend, Dr. Dre, and Eve, and appeared on projects by Kanye West with Jay Z and by 50 Cent with G-Unit. After a viral 2023 jam session with El DeBarge and a reunion with Shanice on the Sherri show, an invitation from D-Nice to perform at Club Quarantine at the Kennedy Center helped spark her return to live performances across the United States. She serves on the board of Cedar Valley Hospice in Iowa and holds a degree in psychology and healthcare.
