SMP November 2nd, 1-4pm, Mass Make Monday, Journal Toppers – Layering Elements

Lewes · Shore Marketplace, 17689 Coastal Hwy

Create a stack of handmade ephemera in a Shore Marketplace workshop centered on journal toppers and layered elements. Part of the Mass Make Mondays series, this hands-on session focuses on making multiples quickly, then embellishing them. Supplies and instruction are provided, and participants can produce as many pieces as time allows, with some mixed media techniques introduced along the way. An optional finished journal can be added at checkout for $20 to hold new embellishments. The session is led by Janis Markopoulos of Boujee Bits Designs. Janis has been active in paper crafting and scrapbooking since 1997, discovered art journaling in 2023 through a local workshop, and now builds creative journals from recyclable materials, fabrics, papers and mediums such as watercolors, acrylics, texture pastes, embossing powders, foiling and pressed flowers. She often dyes papers with organic materials for a vintage look and turns even tiny scraps into artful details. She sells journals at area craft fairs in spring and fall and shares this practice for its creative and restorative benefits. Cost is $35 per person. Class size is limited to 12, with a minimum of 3 participants. Advanced registration is required and tickets are available only through Shore Marketplace. If you register for others, please make sure they receive all class information. Crafting tools and materials may be used during the workshop, and participants accept the associated risks. Requests for special seating or other accommodations should be made in advance. Photos of the class or of participant work may be taken and used for business purposes. For cancellations, credit toward another class by the same instructor is available when the artist is notified at least one week in advance. No shows are not eligible for credit or refund, and any issued credits must be used within six months. Milton · Milton Theatre, 110 Union St

Enjoy a matinee celebration of Elvis Presley’s music as Jesse Garron delivers a polished tribute filled with the voice, look, and charisma that made the original artist a legend. Backed by live musicians and female vocalists, the show spans rock, pop, gospel, and oldies that resonate across three generations. Garron has performed this tribute since 1997 and presents it with respect, using the name of Elvis’s twin brother who passed at birth to honor the legacy while recognizing there was only one Elvis. His passion began in early childhood and led to a standout high school performance at 17, which opened doors to larger stages and eventually to venues across the country, often playing to full houses. His journey includes an invitation to perform for the US Embassy in Algiers and recognition from legendary Elvis guitarist James Burton after a show in Louisiana. Audiences who saw Elvis live, along with people connected to the Presley family, frequently praise the authenticity of his portrayal. The production has drawn widespread media attention through billboards, radio, television, and feature articles, and in 2019 he was inducted into the International Elvis Tribute Artist Hall of Fame for his dedication to preserving the King’s legacy.

    Oyster Weekend

Cape May · Boarding House, 810 Lafayette St

The Boarding House hosts an intimate fall retreat that follows the oyster’s journey in Cape May, from hatchery to tidal flats to a shared table. The experience blends hands-on learning with coastal flavor and conversation in a small group setting. The weekend opens with a relaxed gathering at The Boarding House as Chet Kennedy shucks Sweet Amalia oysters, offers a quick lesson, and pairs them with house-made mignonettes. Made to order Po’ Boy pizzas from the King Sauce team, crowd favorite chowders from Hooked Up Seafood, and snacks from Wild Roots round out the spread. Guests can sample infused beers from Gusto Brewing Co. and wines from Hawk Haven while mingling with fellow travelers, chefs, creators, and environmentally focused authors and thought leaders. Saturday begins with a cup of the house blend from Cape May Roasters and a gentle loop on the Lafayette Street Nature Trail. A trolley then carries the group to Rutgers University’s New Jersey Aquaculture Innovation Center for a private look inside the hatchery with aquaculturists Sean Towers and Becca Gilpin. The day continues at Sweet Amalia Oyster Farm, where scientist and farmer Lisa Calvo leads a low tide walk across the Cape Shore flats to see gear in the water, talk about bay ecology and the rhythms of oyster farming, and offer a shucking lesson with a tasting. Expect sea air, uneven footing, and a touch of bay mud. After a restful afternoon, the evening turns toward the beach light and a dinner created for a small circle. An optional add on at Wild Roots features a private chef’s table with hosts Candace Carpio and Jamie Merlino. Courses highlight seafood, personal influences, and locally sourced ingredients, including produce from Stone Circle Farms, bringing together familiar coastal elements with flavors gathered from afar. Sunday is unhurried, with time for coffee, breakfast out, a bike ride on complimentary cruisers, or a final stroll before a late checkout. Staff are ready with suggestions to help shape those last hours. This retreat is offered exclusively to guests staying at The Boarding House and is capped at 22 participants. The package includes a discounted two night stay, the Friday welcome party, Saturday excursions, and transportation. Rates are $910 for a King Room with six available, $970 for a Queen Room with four available, and $1,030 for The Suite with one available. The Wild Roots chef’s table dinner is a separate reservation at $250 per couple.

    1000 Books Before Kindergarten

Dover · Kent County Public Library, 497 S Red Haven Ln

Families with little ones can take part in 1000 Books Before Kindergarten, a reading initiative that encourages caregivers to share any books with newborns, infants, and toddlers, aiming for 1,000 stories before kindergarten. Rereading favorites counts, and books enjoyed during Story!Time as well as Dial-a-Story selections are included. Reading just one book each night adds up quickly, about 365 in a year, 730 in two years, and 1,095 in three years, which puts the goal within reach since many children begin kindergarten around age five. Early and frequent read-aloud time supports school readiness, nurtures social, emotional, and cognitive growth, and strengthens language development at a stage when learning is especially rapid. Children who are read to regularly often start school with broader vocabularies. Registration for the program is available, and questions can be sent to robin.agar@kentcountyde.gov.

    Tarkus

Milton · Milton Theatre, 110 Union St

Tarkus presents a tribute to Emerson, Lake and Palmer at Milton Theatre in Milton, DE, focusing on the trio’s intricate compositions and pioneering work. Pianist Keith Turner came of age with R&B, classic rock, and Motown in the 60s and 70s, studied at CCC, and performed original pieces along with ELP music in a class that included the late Billy Paul. Multi-instrumentalist Mike hails from the New Jersey and Philadelphia area and grew up in a musical household where Genesis, Yes, ELP, and the Beatles were always playing; he began on drums following his brother and later studied guitar with jazz instructor Bill Johnson. Drummer John started at 13, cites John Bonham, Carl Palmer, Dave Weckl, and Buddy Rich as influences, learned with local teachers, played in school bands, graduated with honors from Musicians Institute in Hollywood, toured the casino circuit in Vegas and worked aboard cruise ships, then returned to Delaware seeking challenging musical opportunities with Tarkus.
