    October Storytellers: Santa Rosa Beach

Distillery 98, 835 Serenoa Rd, Santa Rosa Beach, FL 32459, USA, 835 Serenoa Rd, Santa Rosa Beach
    See details

An intimate evening of live storytelling unfolds at Distillery 98 in Santa Rosa Beach, inviting listeners to settle in with a drink and connect through tales that surprise, delight, and linger long after the lights fade. The theme is Skeletons, focusing on the ways the past sticks around, not always loudly, but in family lore, former identities, shelved ambitions, old coping habits, and the unspoken stories people hoped time would smooth over. Echoes of who we once were can surface in routines, relationships, fears, humor, and those reflexes that are hard to explain. Childhood roles, old mistakes, and shared secrets form hidden chapters that continue to rattle around, reminding us where we came from. Growing up is less about leaving everything behind and more about learning how to carry it. This is an open mic format. Participants may sign up when securing a ticket or on the night, with names added to a bag for selection. Writers, poets, songwriters, and storytellers of every kind are welcome, whether the piece is carefully prepared or sparked in the moment. Fiction, nonfiction, poetry, tall tales, truth telling, and everything in between are all part of the mix. The featured storyteller is Steve Bornhoft, a veteran editor and writer who worked for newspapers in Wisconsin and Illinois before moving to Florida in 1985. As editor of the Panama City News Herald, he earned national recognition for investigative projects that exposed inmate abuse in a county jail and a cash register justice scheme overseen by a state attorney. He later edited magazines at Rowland Publishing in Tallahassee, including Emerald Coast and several client titles. He holds a master’s degree in Corporate and Public Communication from Florida State University and spent a combined eight years as an adjunct professor at FSU and Flagler College. Earlier this year he released Gator Hunt, a collection of his poems and photographs. Around Panama City, he has been introduced as the “Mark Twain of Bay County.” He enjoys fishing and running, and serves as the vice president of marketing and communication at TechFarms in Panama City Beach.
