Wild Sea Turtle Wednesday

South Walton Turtle Watch marks 10 years of its weekly sea turtle education series at The Big Chill, a family-friendly South Walton tradition focused on inspiring stewardship and protecting local nesters and hatchlings. Hands-on stations invite all ages to examine sea turtle skull replicas, see sample egg chamber demonstrations, take part in paint-your-own wooden turtle activities, and explore interactive lessons about endangered sea turtles and their hatchlings, including how to keep beaches clean, dark, and flat. Recognized as a Perfect in Walton Awards winner three years in a row, this nonprofit educational event directs all purchases and donations to sea turtle education and conservation in the community. Children receive a complimentary string backpack with goodies while supplies last. Activities are planned rain or shine unless a tropical storm or hurricane impacts the area, and cash or Venmo is accepted at the merchandise and activity tables.

Pre-Primary Ballet Summer Session is a five week series held on select Fridays for children ages 2 to 4. The class follows the ABT National Training Curriculum designed for the youngest dancers, building early movement skills through imaginative exploration, expressive activities and playful learning. Participants are gradually introduced to foundational concepts while developing body awareness and confidence. Chemistry Corner puts dramatic science center stage with a high energy demonstration that might feature slimy creations, a fire breathing watermelon, and other eye catching reactions. Some experiments may involve flames or small scale bursts, and the action is presented at a safe viewing distance so there is plenty of time to ooh and ahh. Immediately after the demo, families can take part in hands on activities tied to the theme, such as making a watercolor salt painting to explore states of matter, trying out scientific tools, and investigating the chemistry behind impressive effects. Materials are first come, first served, and RSVPs help with planning for expected attendance. Once the demonstration wraps up, guests may come and go throughout the remainder of the program. Formed in 2010, the band features vocalist and keyboardist Donnie Sundal, who also handles Moog bass, alongside guitarist Derwin “Big D” Perkins. Their interplay blends Big D’s New Orleans funk guitar with Sundal’s expressive keys and vocals in the blue-eyed soul tradition, a sound the group has taken to audiences around the world and documented on A Lil’ Boukou in Your Cup from 2012, Let the Groove Ride from 2015, and the 2019 single Never Steal Our Thunder.

Distilled: An Artist Series — Opening Gallery Night featuring Jonathan Kattine

An opening gallery night at Distillery 98 spotlights Jonathan Kattine as part of Distilled: An Artist Series, a program that draws a connection between the craft of spirits and the artistic process of refining experiences into creative expression. The evening ushers in a month-long installation spread throughout the distillery. Kattine activates the space with striking, emotionally resonant work that weaves expressive portraiture, layered narrative, and vivid color to convey energy, closeness, and shared humanity. Guests can enjoy drinks from the bar, grab a bite from a food truck, talk with the artist, and explore pieces placed across the venue as art, conversation, and community shape the atmosphere. His practice centers on close observation and the interplay between people and their surroundings, as well as the tensions between presence and absence, and perception and reality. Highly tactile works bridge image and object through dimensional paint, organic elements, and symbolic motifs, exploring contrasts like natural and synthetic, endurance and decay, and beauty and discomfort. Distilled: An Artist Series — Opening Gallery Night featuring Allison Wickey

Opening Gallery Night kicks off the next chapter of Distilled: An Artist Series at Distillery 98, spotlighting October’s featured artist, Allison Wickey. Rooted in the idea of distillation, the series explores how creators refine influences and experiences into art. This evening marks the start of a month-long installation, with Wickey’s work displayed throughout the distillery all October. Attendees can explore the artwork across the space, meet the artist, enjoy drinks from the bar and a light bite, and take in paintings alive with vibrant color, layered texture, intricate detail, and a deep sense of place and connection. Free to attend. All are welcome. RSVP encouraged. Presented by Distillery 98 in collaboration with Emerald Coast Storytellers and in partnership with the Cultural Arts Alliance of Walton County. A bit about the artist: based along 30A since 2007 and originally from Belleville, Illinois, Wickey studied at Columbia College Chicago, built an early career in faux finishing and murals, and developed a signature multi-step process using venetian plaster, acrylics, and glazes on handmade wooden panels. Her honors include South Walton Artist of the Year and Best Gallery on the Emerald Coast. She has served on the Cultural Arts Alliance of Walton County board, including as president, and co-founded the Underwater Museum of Art, where her sculpture Anamorphous Octopus is installed.
