Archaeology on Tap brings an evening at St. Michael's Brewing Company featuring Beneath the Oaks: Memory, Mortality, and Mortuary Landscapes of the Gulf Coast with Jennifer Melcher of the University of West Florida Archaeology Institute. The talk examines how cemeteries along the Gulf Coast reveal community bonds and histories, showing how grave markers can open windows into shared pasts and connections across the region. Melcher is a senior faculty research associate who supports the UWF Department of Anthropology and the Archaeology Institute through database and GIS work, mapping and graphics, geophysical surveys, and 3D scanning and printing for research, education, and outreach. Her interests include Native American communities at the time of contact with a focus on cultural exchange. She teaches GIS for Anthropology at both undergraduate and graduate levels, serves on graduate committees, and leads workshops on surveying and geophysical methods. Recent work has focused on historic cemeteries in the Pensacola area, both marked and unmarked, including AME Zion and Magnolia Cemeteries, St. Michael's Cemetery, Miraflores Park, and the Escambia County Poor Farm. She is active in professional organizations such as the Pensacola Archaeological Society, Florida Anthropological Society, Florida Archaeological Council, Southeastern Archaeological Society, and the Society for American Archaeology.
