At The Bistro, this Brooksville Matters gathering features an introduction to Narcan training and a Hidden in Plain Sight presentation with Jenna Davis of the Hernando County Community Coalition. The Narcan segment supports a safer, better informed community by explaining how this tool can be used in an overdose emergency. Hidden in Plain Sight guides participants through a staged teen bedroom to reveal current substance use trends, clues to watch for, common slang, and behaviors. The session aims to help parents and other adults notice what might otherwise be overlooked, understand the significance once it is explained, and feel ready to start conversations that can prevent harmful choices. Drawing on certification in internal medicine and lifestyle medicine, she shares a holistic, integrative approach centered on nutrition, daily habits, and macrobiotic cooking principles. The session highlights practical steps for whole-person wellness, including physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual considerations, and how these choices can support the health of beloved animal companions. Presented in collaboration with the WellCome OM Center, whose mission emphasizes lifelong, balanced eating and informed lifestyle choices to help people achieve and maintain better health. Weekly Wellness Workshop

A weekly, hands-on wellness session at the NAMI Hernando Community Center invites participants to explore practical tools for nervous system regulation and energy healing as part of the free WellSpring Recovery System. Open to both beginners and those with experience, the workshop uses a modular, interactive format that emphasizes doing rather than listening. Sessions include opening and closing moments of awareness and guided practice in movement therapies such as yoga, tai chi, and qigong, along with breathwork, energy and acupressure techniques, sensory awareness, and meditation. There is no lecture and no open discussion forum. The aim is to help participants build a personal toolkit they can rely on when challenges arise, supporting confidence and self direction in healing.

Teen Leaders Parent Orientation

This mandatory parent orientation is for the Teen Leaders Club, a YMCA program for youth ages 11 to 18 that develops confident and responsible leaders through training, hands on volunteering and meaningful experiences. Teens take part in regular meetings and community projects that highlight service, teamwork and the habits that support a healthy, productive future. Participants build communication skills, make friends, explore possible careers and can earn more than 100 volunteer hours that support school requirements, Bright Futures and college applications while contributing to their community. Participation includes monthly dues of $5 due by the 10th of each month, and completion of additional paperwork.

Presented by Hernando County Vet Fest, this VIP dinner at VFW Post 10209 honors service members who have been awarded the Purple Heart. Guests can expect heartfelt remarks from speakers, a served meal, live performances, and a silent-bid auction. A table sponsorship is available for $300, which includes two seats for the sponsor and a guest while providing four seats as a gift to Purple Heart recipients and their spouses. It is a meaningful occasion to share a table with decorated veterans and express gratitude for their service.

Expect free backpacks while supplies last, a school bus themed relay with other field day challenges, a pencil pull prize board, make-your-own pencil pouches, a freeze dance party, bubbles, temporary tattoo stations, a giant sidewalk chalk area, and a youth wellness zone. Step into a market-style exhibition that celebrates the eerie and unusual, featuring oddities, art inspired by cult classic horror, wet specimens, local vendors, a food truck, and other curiosities. The brewery will also present an installation from August through the end of October, welcoming works that range from cult classics to oddity art and other macabre pieces. All submissions must arrive ready to hang or otherwise display, and each item should include a tag with a payment code at drop off. Hot August Night Trail Race

Get ready for a night trail race through the Citrus Tract of the Withlacoochee Forest. You can choose the 5-mile, 10-mile, or 20-mile distance, with the course marked using reflective pins and glow sticks. Headlamps or flashlights are required, and runners are encouraged to dress in bright colors. Packet pickup runs from 5:00 PM until 7:25 PM, and check-in begins 45 minutes before your registered start time. The 5-mile race starts at 7:30 PM, the 10-mile starts at 7:00 PM, and the 20-mile starts at 6:00 PM, with the course closing at 11:00 PM. Afterward, there’s a post-race picnic and every finisher receives a handcrafted medal.

This swim lessons program for kids ages 3 to 5 (Stage 1, 2, and 3) focuses on building early water confidence and core aquatic skills. In Stage 1, kids learn water acclimation and safe exits, and in Stage 2 they work on body control, directional changes, and forward movement. Stage 3 emphasizes longer distances to swim toward safety, plus rhythmic breathing and coordinated arm and leg action. Children are evaluated during the first lesson to determine the appropriate stage. Kids should come in a swimsuit, and swim diapers are required if not fully potty trained. Spooktacularly Sweet Stroll

The second annual Spooktacularly Sweet Stroll offers a family friendly Halloween outing through Weeki Wachee, Brooksville, and Spring Hill. Pick up a free passport and a map of bakery stops at Bishop’s Bakery or another designated pickup point, then make your way among participating bakery and artisan stands around the neighborhood. At each stop, collect a spooky sticker to mark your passport, browse and purchase tasty treats, and support local makers and bakers. Many stands will add to the fun with trick or treat surprises. Every stop also provides an entry into a raffle for a Halloween basket, and the more stands you visit, the more chances you earn. Raffle entries are limited to one per person at each stand, with a bonus entry available for posting a photo of your completed passport on the event page. Participation is free, with goodies available for purchase along the route. Please park thoughtfully, as you would for a neighborhood garage sale, and be mindful of driveways. Bishop’s Bakery is the sole coordinator of this event, and any messages asking for contact, likes, payments, or other participation from other sources are scams.
