The Cottage

Melbourne Civic Theatre presents The Cottage, a fast-moving comedy by Sandy Rustin, directed by Peg Girard and staged in the company’s intimate Downtown Melbourne venue. Fresh to Brevard audiences, this farce spins a 1923 British story in which Sylvia Van Kipness chooses to reveal her affair to both her husband and her lover’s wife, igniting a whirlwind of secrets and laugh-out-loud complications. As the truth unravels, the play pokes at questions of fate, identity, and marriage, while flirting with danger and balancing desire, betrayal, and love. The cast features Mary Carson Barnette, Anthony DeTrano, Sarah Lawrence, Richard Klenotich II, Jemimah Rajack, and Chris Tsocanos. The creative team includes set design and technical direction by Alan Selby, lighting by Josh Huss, scenic art by Linda Lindsey, costumes by Susan Suomi, and hair and wigs by Jessica Foix. All tickets are $35. Founded in 1951 as the Indian River Players, Melbourne Civic Theatre is the Space Coast’s longest running community theatre and has made its home in Historic Downtown Melbourne since 2006, continuing a more than seven decade tradition of enriching Brevard County through live performance.

Plastic Canvas Needlepoint Letters for Adults

Learn the basics of plastic canvas needlepoint in a beginner friendly class where no prior crafting experience is needed. This hand sewing technique uses a plastic mesh and is easier on the hands and eyes than stitching on fabric such as traditional needlepoint or cross stitch. You will start by cutting a plastic canvas shape and practicing the tent, also known as the continental, stitch on both straight and curved edges. Then apply what you have learned to create a letter that can be used as an ornament, gift tag, or applique, or strung together to form a banner or spell a name. Cost is $15 and supplies are included. Each participant receives a written pattern with a single chart for the letter selected at checkout, one ball of acrylic yarn, 7 mesh plastic canvas, and a tapestry needle, with both metal and plastic options available as needed. Advance reservation is required and classes without reserved students will be canceled. Teens are welcome. Parents may stay, keeping in mind that space is limited, or browse the antique mall during the class. A separate kids needlepoint class is available for younger children.
