The Pirates of Penzance

Presented by University of Florida Opera Theatre with the 60-piece UF Symphony Orchestra, this production follows Frederic, whose birthday that occurs only in leap years leaves him attached to a band of kindhearted pirates far longer than he planned. Humor, romance, and clever banter unfold as a flustered Modern Major-General, his daughters, and a spirited ensemble cross paths with the pirate crew. The charm and wordplay of Gilbert and Sullivan sit at the center of the performance, brought to life by artists from UF Opera Theatre, whose previous appearances at the Reilly Arts Center include The Phantom of the Opera, Hansel and Gretel, Gianni Schicchi, and Opera Goes to the Movies.

Follow safe zone procedures by removing magazines, clearing at least three shots in a safe direction, and setting your replica to safe before stepping into the staging area. Equipment and performance limits are enforced. Rentals must use approved BBs or BBs purchased on site. Chronograph standards use .32 BBs for HPA and .20 BBs for pistols, AEGs, and spring-powered replicas. Rate of fire must remain under 25 rounds per second. Weapon classes have specific limits. Pistols and shotguns must be at or below 1.45 joules with .20 BBs. Pistols may use semi with no minimum engagement distance, while full auto requires 25 feet. Shotguns may use semi with no minimum, and full auto requires 50 feet. Rifles are capped at 1.5 joules for AEGs with .20 BBs and 1.55 joules for HPA with .32 BBs. Semi typically has a 10 foot minimum unless the head referee specifies otherwise, and full auto appears only in select game types. SMGs must be 1.0 joule or under with .20 BBs, use mid-cap magazines, be true SMG platforms or a fully automatic sidearm such as a G18, with no minimum for semi and 25 feet for full auto. LMGs must be at or below 1.5 joules with .20 BBs, may use burst at 25 feet, and full auto at 50 feet, and must be true LMG platforms. DMRs are limited to 2.0 joules with .20 BBs, are semi only, have a 75 foot minimum, and use mid or real cap magazines. Sniper rifles must be bolt action, stay under 2.25 joules with .20 BBs, and observe a 100 foot minimum engagement distance. Grenade use follows strict guidelines. Only pyrotechnic and smoke grenades sold on site are permitted and then only in approved areas. No homemade devices are allowed. Grenades must be tossed underhand, never thrown directly at a player, and may be lobbed through a window. A 15 foot effect radius applies, hard cover exceptions are reserved for milsim settings, and a detonation in any size room eliminates everyone inside. Expect a structured day of skirmishes with clear procedures, consistent safety checks, and helpful referees keeping games fair and enjoyable.

Blues in the Box: Frank Bang | June 19 | NOMA Black Box Theater

This performance spotlights Frank Bang, a guitarist whose easygoing nature offstage contrasts with raw, emotional playing that can make you dance, cry, or simply feel deeply. In his twenties he worked at Buddy Guy’s Legends while fronting his own bands, learning from regulars such as Junior Wells, Otis Rush, and Lonnie Brooks. He went on to spend five years touring as Buddy Guy’s guitarist, a role earned through relentless effort. That same determination continues to drive him to keep playing, keep sharpening his craft, and bring unfiltered feeling to every song.
