Educators and horticulture professionals from Youth Environmental Alliance present a hands-on exploration of how thoughtfully designed gardens can build climate resilience and create pathways for pollinators. The session looks at purposeful planting as a practical tool to curb climate impacts, restore ecological function, and support biodiversity in both home and city landscapes. Through an interactive demonstration of YEA’s CO2 Calamity program, participants examine the carbon cycle, the challenge of atmospheric imbalance, and the ways vegetation stores carbon, moderates climate, and strengthens ecosystems at local and global scales. The presentation links clear environmental science with real-world horticulture, showing how well planned green spaces can help ease environmental stressors. Beyond carbon storage, the program highlights the value of added green spaces and ecological connections, focusing on wildlife corridors and pollinator-friendly habitat within urban and suburban areas. Attendees gain insight into using native species, layered planting, and intentional design choices to improve habitat continuity for butterflies, bees, birds, and other essential wildlife moving through fragmented environments. Blending science, horticulture, and design thinking, it offers a welcoming path for turning gardens into meaningful instruments of stewardship and resilience. Presenters include Laurie Sheldon, an educator, horticulturist, and designer whose public and private sector experience spans landscape architecture, urban planning, construction, and interpretive work. Her projects across Florida include parks, civic places, resorts, and streetscapes, alongside service with the Florida Park Service, and her background in the natural sciences informs learning-rich spaces that honor each site’s environmental and cultural character. Tyler Rosemellia is an environmental educator and horticulture professional with experience in regenerative farming, greenhouse management, and community teaching. As a speaker, she shares practical guidance on sustainable growing, plant care, and local biodiversity, encouraging deeper connections with surrounding ecosystems.
