    See details

A lineup featuring LJB, Ella Beth, and Zoe Wallace brings together three distinctive sounds. LJB, an Atlanta based band, builds original songs into spacious, emotive jams. The quintet of Brian Graham, Jason Axelrod, Matt Davis, Eric Byrne, and Lennon Jones highlights interplay and chemistry, blending singer songwriter craft with soulful colors drawn from jazz and blues. Their music moves from tightly arranged passages to open improvisation, creating a balance of structure and spontaneity. Ella Beth offers a bold stage presence and playful storytelling while weaving jazz, soul, gospel, and blues. Her voice has drawn comparisons to Amy Winehouse, Adele, and RAYE, and her sharp lyricism reflects influences such as Lily Allen and Kate Miller-Heidke. After relocating from Sydney to Vietnam in 2012, she spent more than a decade performing across Asia, the Middle East, and Europe with numerous groups, including the international collective The Hanoing Jazz Band. She was a finalist on The Voice Vietnam in 2019, performing in both English and Vietnamese. Zoe Wallace, a southern born singer, songwriter, producer, and actor, mixes the grit of southern rock with indie, moody storytelling. Alash

Eddie Owen Presents, 3116 Main St, Duluth
    See details

Alash brings the art of Tuvan throat singing to Eddie Owen Presents, showcasing xöömei, a vocal technique that produces multiple pitches at once. Their music balances deep roots with subtle contemporary touches, weaving intricate harmonies, western instruments, and modern song structures while remaining firmly Tuvan at its core. The musicians trained from childhood and studied at Kyzyl Arts College as Tuva connected more with the West. They formed a traditional ensemble and earned awards in international throat-singing competitions as a group and as soloists. Their first United States tour was sponsored by the OpenWorld Leadership program of the Library of Congress and the National Endowment for the Arts, and they have returned many times to appreciative audiences, with major press noting the impact of their performances. Known for wide-ranging collaborations, Alash has worked with the Sun Ra Arkestra and artists across country, classical, jazz, and beatboxing. They contributed to Béla Fleck & the Flecktones’ Grammy-winning holiday album Jingle All the Way, partnered with Chicago’s Fifth House Ensemble on Sonic Meditations, and joined a global jam band that recorded the soundtrack for the video game The Pathless. More recently, Bady-Dorzhu Ondar collaborated with beatboxer Shodekeh on a live recording of original Tuvan songs shaped with hip hop artists. Beyond the stage, the group shares its tradition through workshops for learners from elementary school to conservatory levels, inspiring even very young students to try throat singing. Their recordings include Alash Live at the Enchanted Garden, Alash, Buura, Achai re-released on Smithsonian Folkways, Meni Mana, and Embodiments by Bady-Dorzhu Ondar with Shodekeh and hip hop artists.

The gathering weaves guided breathwork, movement, meditation, heart-centered songs and genuine conversation. A custom songbook supports group singing while participants play shakers and drums. Prayerful rounds, movement practices and explorations of varied healing approaches are part of the flow. Herbal teas such as blue lotus and rose are served, and an altar of edible offerings is shared. The setting is a forested spot near 78 and Lake Lucerne, often by the river. Depending on weather, the circle may be held around a fire, in a cooled yurt or indoors. Participants are invited to bring a nourishing dish for a post-circle potluck, instruments and their voice, a journal, personal altar items, an open heart and clothing suitable for time outdoors. Crafts sometimes unfold after the main circle. Attendance is limited to 10 women to preserve intimacy, supported by a tiered ticket system that helps cover tea, food, songbooks, facilitator training, preparation and care for the outdoor space. Volunteer roles function as participant tickets. The intention is to help women feel more grounded in their bodies and more connected with themselves and one another, nurturing relationships that continue between circles. Facilitation is led by founder Sharon Yun, who draws on experience with intentional communities, festivals and creative and healing collectives, alongside facilitator Yesica Leon, who focuses on harmony within the feminine and masculine. Part of a monthly jazz residency, each show shines a light on a different legend. The Jazz Legacy Project took shape in 2015 when Justin Varnes, while teaching Jazz History at Georgia State University, replaced the usual textbook with records and stories. That classroom idea grew into an ongoing residency at the Velvet Note in Atlanta, where the group has filled seats for the last six years. The format pairs performances of the featured artist’s music with stories shared between tunes, giving listeners the context behind the sound.
