HSF Panel Discussion: "Yamacraw Village: History, Community, and Continuity"

A free public panel at Historic First Bryan Baptist Church explores the past and present of Yamacraw Village, following the community's 18th, 19th, and early 20th century roots through the 1939 demolition of a multicultural neighborhood and the 1941 creation of a segregated public housing complex. As the oldest federally funded housing project still standing in Savannah and among the earliest in the United States, it offers a lens on national trends in urban planning and public housing and their impact on underrepresented communities. With demolition and redevelopment planned, the discussion invites important questions about how public housing communities are preserved. The program also highlights First Bryan Baptist Church, founded in 1788 by Andew Bryan while he was enslaved at Brampton Planation, recognized as one of the oldest Black Baptist churches in the United States. Serving as a spiritual and community anchor in Yamacraw, the church's enduring role is essential to understanding the neighborhood's history. Precision Rifle 1 offers a one day, six hour introduction for new rifle shooters who want to build the fundamentals needed for accurate first round hits at 100 yards and beyond. The curriculum prioritizes core marksmanship and stable shooting positions, along with discussions on estimating range and wind, mounting and adjusting optics, keeping a data book, and calling shots. On the range, participants establish a 100 yard zero, work through mechanical zero countdowns, confirm a cold shot zero, evaluate scope repeatability, and compare zeros achieved with a bipod versus a pack. Essential gear and maintenance are covered, including cleaning equipment and methods, so students understand both setup and upkeep. An introduction to the 22 NRL series is included to broaden competitive and practical context. Tuition is $200. Students should bring a sub MOA rifle with a recommended adjustable scope, a bipod or support such as a bean bag or backpack, a spotting scope or binoculars, a shooting mat or tarp, ear and eye protection, a brimmed hat, a notebook for recording data, cleaning supplies, and drinks and snacks. Training also emphasizes practical accuracy from a variety of dominant and non-dominant positions, along with a comparison of 22 LR and centerfire ballistics. At Savannah History Museum, a new exhibition brings the American Revolution into focus with 17 restored cannons recovered from the Savannah River near Old Fort Jackson after resting underwater for over two centuries. Alongside these pieces, the display includes two cannons shown as they were discovered, fragments from three anchors, and other artifacts. Covering about 3,000 square feet, the exhibition shares broader perspectives on the Revolution, highlights Georgia’s role, and delves into the region’s naval history. The project reflects strong community involvement, with support from corporations, heritage organizations, and individuals. The museum sits across from Battlefield Memorial Park, which commemorates the Battle of Savannah. The exhibit is open during regular museum hours, seven days a week.

The 3rd Annual Soul and Flavor Food Truck Fest brings a lively celebration of food, culture, and community to The Park at Eastern Wharf on Savannah’s waterfront. Enjoy a carefully selected mix of local food trucks, live music and entertainment, and a marketplace featuring local vendors and small businesses. The atmosphere is family friendly and pairs great tastes with scenic waterfront views. Visitors can also relax in the Flavor Lounge, which includes a mobile bar and six TVs for a laid-back viewing experience. Early bird tickets are available.

Labor Day Commemoration at Fort Morris

An annual Labor Day commemoration offers a day of living history along the Medway River and St. Catherine's Sound. Skilled craftspeople share the trades and everyday techniques of Colonial life, creating an immersive look at the past. Historical reenactors present musket and cannon demonstrations with replica equipment, adding the sounds and sights of the era. The event is family friendly, with plenty of activities for children and opportunities to learn together. Admission is $3.50 to $5.00 per person.

Savannah World Oddities Expo

WOE returns to Savannah for its second year at the Savannah Convention Center, filling Hall D with a touring showcase of the unusual and the curious. This celebration brings together art, history, science, and entertainment in one place, with aisles of eclectic vendors and small businesses to explore. Visitors can add the Deformed Exhibit for a close look at real, rare specimens that illustrate striking medical anomalies. Hands-on learning awaits in WOE Labs, where instructors guide participants through taxidermy, rat skeleton articulation, miniature diorama terrariums, and other creative pursuits, with offerings that can vary by city. The Main Stage features live performances alongside surprise guest speakers offering free seminars, ranging from contortion and sideshow-inspired acts to clowning and other unexpected displays. Ticket options include general admission and VIP, with VIP providing early shopping before the crowds. Children 12 and under are admitted at no cost.

First Day of Farm Lessons!

Weekly farm lessons introduce children to western riding and hands-on animal care. Riders learn the basics in the saddle and practice grooming, bathing, and feeding the horses, along with caring for other animals on the farm. Engaging activities such as gardening, fishing, crafts, and gem mining round out each visit. Classes take place once a week on Wednesdays with separate one-hour groups for ages 4 to 7 and 8 to 12. Siblings in different age ranges may attend together during the younger group’s hour. A class for 3-year-olds may be added if there is sufficient interest. Group lessons are drop off only. The cost is $25 per lesson, paid monthly, with the first month due at registration. Private lessons start at $55 per hour, and availability is shared upon private inquiry.

Liberty Fall Fest!

Celebrate the season at a family-friendly fall festival at the YMCA on the fields. Enjoy a lively atmosphere with local vendors, music, bounce houses, and activities for all ages. Attendees can learn about YMCA programs and facility offerings, with information on memberships, youth sports, wellness, and more. There will be plenty of food, fun, and a welcoming community feel with something for everyone. Vendor fees are $60 for craft vendors and $80 for food truck vendors.

Opening day - Pumpkin Patch 🎃🦙🐇

Kick off the pumpkin patch season with a full day of farm fun for all ages. Meet friendly animals in the petting area, including cuddles with baby pigs and baby goats, stroll through a walk-in parakeet aviary where more than 100 birds flutter around, and explore a reptile exhibit featuring a hands-on snake encounter. Enjoy a jump pad, a bounce house, an inflatable axe-throwing setup, a hay-themed archery activity, a corn play pit, barrel-train rides, supersized bubbles, races with rubber ducks, and other games. Horseback rides are $5, entry to the parakeet aviary is $5, and gem mining is $10. The pumpkin patch will be open with pumpkins priced between $2 and $20. Look for a special appearance by Bluey. Admission is $16 for each guest who is of walking age or older, and payment at the gate is cash only. Vendor opportunities are available for this event, and organizers advise that interested vendors initiate contact and remain cautious of scammers.

Presented by UGA Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant with partner organizations, it emphasizes partnerships and practical problem solving tailored to Georgia’s coastal needs. The program features Georgia-centered case studies, opportunities to build connections across public, private, and academic sectors, and interactive discussions that encourage collaboration. The goal is to surface urgent challenges, share new research and on-the-ground solutions, and strengthen the networks needed to support a resilient, thriving coast.

Wag-O-Ween 5K and Fun Run!

Kick off Wag-O-Ween month with a dog-friendly 5K and 1-mile fun run at Howe2Run. Run or walk, bring your own pup, or request to be paired with a shelter dog by selecting the Shelter Dog add-on during registration, with matches offered first come and based on availability. Early registration is $30 and day-of registration is $35. Entry includes a bib, event photos, and a race medal while supplies last, and the race is not timed. Dogs participate at no cost. After the finish, enjoy the free after paw-ty, open to everyone. Wag-O-Ween sponsors at the WareWoof level or higher may apply to be vendors at the after paw-ty, with limited vendor space. Volunteer opportunities include participant check-in, water stations, puppy play, and more, with sign-ups coming soon. Hosted by Howe2Run, Renegade Paws Rescue, and Case Veterinary Hospital. All proceeds support community rescue efforts through the Wag-O-Ween mission, and a portion of sales from Howe2Run on run day will also be donated. Explore a petting zoo, take horse rides, hop aboard barrel train rides, dig into a corn pit, bounce on a jump pad, create giant bubbles, shoot hoops with barnyard basketball, have fun in a bounce house, discover a reptile exhibit, wander a pumpkin patch, play games, and browse vendor booths. Visiting food trucks will be on site to make dinner simple, with a variety of tasty options. General admission includes access to the farm activities unless otherwise noted. The cost is $16 per person, payable in cash upon arrival. Select experiences carry an additional fee, including horse rides for $5, animal feed for $2 or $5, and gem mining for $10. Mini highland calf photo sessions 🐮📸

Enjoy a mini highland calf photo experience with brief, private sessions that welcome participants of any age. The calf for this round will arrive close to the session date, so any examples shown ahead of time are from previous sessions, and a current photo will be shared as the day approaches. Each booking includes a 10-minute private session priced at $175 per session. Full payment is required at booking and is nonrefundable. After the shoot, a digital gallery will be sent by email within two weeks with a minimum of 12 images. Availability is limited to eight spots.
