UNDERTALE creator and composer Toby Fox has voiced enthusiasm for hearing skilled musicians interpret the score, underscoring how central the music is to the game. His latest chapter, BLACK MIDAS, reflects a return to dancefloor roots, born from a cross country journey after a wildfire displaced him and created largely on the road without a permanent studio. An all ages performance by SYML comes to Variety Playhouse. SYML is the solo project of Seattle musician Brian Fennell, whose name means simple in Welsh, and whose songs often reach toward places and people that feel like sanctuary. His newest release, Nobody Lives Here, showcases his most distilled writing and was written, recorded, and produced with longtime collaborator Brian Eichelberger. The music embraces life’s contradictions and its fleeting nature, finding connection even amid loss through melody, lyrical intimacy, slide guitar textures, and the low warmth of cello. Guided by a clear sense of humanity, he is candid about how darkness can inspire good. His 2019 debut featured the multi-platinum Where’s My Love and the Gold-certified favorite Girl. The 2023 follow up, The Day My Father Died, drew praise from NPR, was recorded at Studio X with producer Phil Ek, and includes collaborations with Guy Garvey of Elbow, Lucius, Sara Watkins of Nickel Creek, and Charlotte Lawrence. His work has appeared widely in film and television, and Lana Del Rey used one of his compositions in Paris, TX on her Grammy-nominated 2023 album. With more than four billion streams and multi-platinum recognition, he continues to explore themes of grief, loss, mortality, and the passage of time with steady grace. In 2024 he launched FIN. A milestone anniversary fills Academy Ballroom ATL in Buckhead with salsa, bachata, performances, and training. A headline showcase by nine-time champions Uriel and Jeannette anchors the festivities alongside ten performances, appearances from more than thirty artists, four hours of social dancing, and five instructor-led workshops.
