Celebrate the South Side Steppers 18th Anniversary with four days centered on love, peace, and line dance. This Monthly Sewing Club session focuses on creating a comfortable maxi skirt with an elastic waistband. Students should have already mastered beginner skills before attending. The fee is $60, or $65 for non-members. Please bring 2.5 to 3 yards of midweight woven fabric such as cotton, rayon, or a linen blend, along with matching thread, fabric scissors, and a measuring tape. You will also need a package of 2 or 3 inch elastic sized to your waist measurement plus 2 inches. Pins or clips may be helpful if they are not supplied in class. A landmark celebration of the Garden’s 50th presents a sweeping return of Niki de Saint Phalle’s monumental sculptures, first unveiled here two decades ago. The French artist, recognized as one of the first women to create massive works, is known for her playful, colorful Nanas along with imaginative figures of people, animals, and monsters. This expansive presentation gathers 41 works, believed to be the largest display of her art in North America, with most pieces on loan from the Niki Charitable Art Foundation and others from private collections. Expect dramatic contrasts in scale, from Grand Step Totem that weighs 2,000 pounds and Large Yelling Man standing 16.5 feet tall, to compact wall reliefs measuring about 2 feet square. Installations are placed throughout the Garden, the Conservatory, the Orchid Center, and the Gardenhouse Gallery, with The Three Graces animating the Skyline Garden pond. Advance registration is required. Activities begin with check-in at the store, where attendees can mingle, try demo shoes, and get set for the run.
