The Garden marks its 50th anniversary with an encore exhibition of monumental sculptures by French artist Niki de Saint Phalle, returning to the place where her work first appeared there two decades ago. Forty-one pieces are presented in what is described as the largest showing of her work in North America, with most loans from the Niki Charitable Art Foundation and additional works from private collections. De Saint Phalle, who died in 2002, was among the first women to create massive sculptural works and is celebrated for her Nanas, playful and vividly colored figures of women, animals, and monsters. The artworks range from the 2,000-pound Grand Step Totem and the 16.5-foot Large Yelling Man to small wall reliefs measuring about two feet square.
