'Ainakea

Maui OnStage presents the third production of its 2026 season with ‘Ainakea at the Historic Iao Theater in Wailuku. Written by Maui playwright James Nevius and directed by Francis Tau'a, the drama unfolds on Maui’s west side in 1953 and follows the wealthy Goodale family as their sugar plantation, ‘Ainakea, declines. The plantation takes its name from a valued white sugarcane, and the story mirrors the island’s transition as the plantation era waned and statehood approached, drawing inspiration from Anton Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard reimagined in a 1950s Hawaiian setting. Nevius’s earlier full-length work, Murder in the Nth Degree, earned the inaugural ProArts Playhouse playwriting award and was recognized by Broadway World Hawaii as Best Play of 2022. Tickets are priced from $10 to $45. Support for the 2026 season comes from the Wave of Harmony Foundation in partnership with Marji Knowles and Michael Tibbott.
