Help Restore Life to Rare Cemetery Prairies

Prophetstown · Sandytown Cemetery, 12524 Spring Hill Rd

    Free

Experience a rare glimpse of true Illinois at Sandytown Cemetery, a remnant prairie where restoration work helps keep native landscapes thriving. In cooperation with many agencies, including the NAGs, Friends of Illinois Nature Preserves has tools, plans, and authorizations in place for on-the-ground eco first aid. This workday is part of a month-long marathon of cemetery prairie restoration across the northern half of the state, focused on caring for irreplaceable sites. Participants will help gather rare seed to heal damaged areas, cut brush that shades out prairie plants, and ready the site for a controlled burn. The ground is uneven, poison ivy may still be green, and brambles are present in portions of the site, so sturdy boots and long pants are recommended.
