Carnegie-Stout Public Library presents a free matinee screening of the classic musical biography Yankee Doodle Dandy in the Aigler Auditorium on the third floor. The 1942 film stars James Cagney, an Academy Award winner for Best Actor, as George M. Cohan, tracing the entertainer’s early years, signature songs, achievements, and romances. It received eight Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, and was added to the National Film Registry in 1993 by the Library of Congress for its cultural, historical, and aesthetic importance. This free support group meets twice a month at Smokestack and is open to anyone 18 and older. Participation typically ranges from 8 to 12 people, often spanning early 20s through early 50s. Each meeting begins with relaxed time to connect, with complimentary refreshments. A facilitator then shares announcements and guides a structured sharing round where anyone who wishes has a few minutes to speak without interruption or feedback. The group then moves into open conversation, and participants may invite feedback if they choose. No advance registration is required. Attendance and discussion are kept confidential. This Lunch and Learn at Convivium Urban Farmstead explores tomatoes in depth, from how varieties are classified to effective techniques for growing healthy plants. The session includes a visit to the garden for a tomato pruning demonstration. Participants who wish to eat during the presentation can order at the front counter and have meals delivered to the Learning Center, or choose to dine in the restaurant before or after the program. If ordering food to enjoy during the session, plan to arrive 15 to 30 minutes early to place the order. Registration is appreciated but not required, and there is no cost to attend. The program is led by instructor and farm manager AJ Shultz, who oversees more than 13,000 square feet of gardens and teaches gardening and composting classes, with experience that includes work with organic farms and edible landscape organizations in Santa Cruz, California, Huelo, Hawaii, and Margaret River, Australia.

Families with children ages 6 to 12 can explore the world of honeybees at the Dubuque Arboretum & Botanical Gardens Visitor Center with Dry Creek Beekeeping. The fairgrounds feature a sensory-safe visiting hour with activities to start the day, followed by a full lineup of family attractions. Explore Old MacDonald’s Farm, let little ones play in Tiny Town, and visit the Exotic Animal Zoo ground act sponsored by TH Media. Creative projects fill the Creative Arts Building and Kids Korner, the 4-H Building opens its exhibits, the Country Store stocks medicine, miscellaneous items, and canned beverages, and the Exhibit Hall welcomes browsers. A mechanical bull opens later, and fairground rides operate for one ticket per ride at three dollars per ticket. Livestock and youth programming are at the heart of the experience. See the entry of 4-H and FFA horse and pony exhibits along with judging for dairy goats, sheep, horses and ponies, dairy cattle, dairy cows, and meat goats. The day also includes the release of all milking animals and a 4-H and FFA award ceremony. Hands-on STEM exploration takes place in the 4-H Building, honey tasting is presented by the Dubuque Swiss Valley Beekeeping Club, and cupcake decorating is open to all ages by Sprinkled Confections. BINGO offers more ways to take part. Live entertainment runs throughout the grounds. Scott’s Comedy and Magic Show appears more than once, Grace Good performs at multiple times, and Lasting Impressions returns for additional sets. A Bubble and Foam Show pops up again later. The fair’s opening ceremony leads into an evening lineup that features Scott’s Magic Show and a mainstage performance of country duets and a Neil Diamond tribute by Doug Allen Nash sponsored by Biechler Electric. Rock Day - Dubuque County Fair - Friday

Rock Day at the Dubuque County Fair fills the grounds with attractions, competitions, and live entertainment. A sensory-safe visiting hour with activities starts the festivities. Families can explore Old MacDonald’s Farm, spend extra time in Tiny Town thanks to support from Cole Trucking, Simon’s Lawn Care & Maintenance, Prairie Farms, CJ’s ATM Service, and Big Time Event Rentals, and stop by the Exotic Animal Zoo attraction presented by TH Media. Creative spaces await in the Creative Arts Building and Kids Korner, while the 4-H Building, Exhibit Hall, and a Country Store with medicine, miscellaneous items, and canned beverages round out the stops around the fairgrounds. Fair rides offer a special with a $35 ride bracelet, and a mechanical bull adds to the fun. The schedule features the Foam and Bubble Show, 4-H and FFA livestock auctions for sheep, meat goats, and swine, a Create Your Creature with Legos activity by DuBrick, Grace Good performances, a fair eating contest, and the 4-H and FFA Dairy Basket and Beef Auction. BINGO is on the schedule, and Lasting Impressions takes the stage multiple times. Young car enthusiasts can take part in the Kiddie Car Show with check in at the North Gate, followed by judging and the vehicle release. A removal deadline applies to all 4-H and FFA livestock sold at auction, and friendly rivalry continues with the Chicken Chucking Contest. Live music arrives with the Adam Keith Band, and Scott’s Magic Show adds more variety. The lineup also includes a mainstage concert with Sleep Theory and special guest Silly Goose. The Foam and Bubble Show makes multiple appearances, and the Festival Garden features Crazy Delicious on Blain’s Stage, presented by Big Time Event Rentals and BMW Music.

Ribs & Wings - Cook Off - DBQ Co. Fair

Teams will compete at the top of the grandstands at the Dubuque County Fair in a ribs and wings cooking competition. The entry fee is $125. Each team receives a 12-by-12 work space, six racks of ribs, and one 10-pound bag of wings to prepare however they like. No electricity will be provided. Cash prizes are $500 for first place, $300 for second, $250 for third, and $200 for the people's choice. People's choice awards will be presented for both wings and ribs.

Truck and tractor power headline a full Family Day at the Dubuque County Fair, with the pull presented by Sherrill Mutual Insurance and the family festivities supported by Premier Bank. The day begins with a sensory-safe visiting hour that includes activities, then continues with favorites like Old MacDonald’s Farm and extended time in Tiny Town, backed by Cole Trucking, Simon’s Lawn Care & Maintenance, Prairie Farms, CJ’s ATM Service, and Big Time Event Rentals. An Exotic Animal Zoo ground act is available daily with support from TH Media. Exhibits and kid-friendly spaces include the Creative Arts Building and Kids Korner, the 4-H Building, and the Exhibit Hall. The Country Store carries medicine, miscellaneous items, and canned beverages. A mechanical bull opens later, and a Fairground Rides special is offered for $35, or $30 with a Theisen’s coupon. Animal shows and competitions span the day with Clover Kids rabbit entries and shows, 4-H and FFA rabbit events with release following, and open class horse and dairy shows in their respective venues. Family Fun Day activities take place at the grandstands. Stage entertainment returns throughout the schedule with multiple sets from Lasting Impressions and Grace Good, plus Scott’s Magic Show and a Foam and Bubble Show. Cooking enthusiasts can take part in the fair cook-off, which includes a check-in and a turn-in. Games and contests add to the fun with Beer Olympics, BINGO, Lego Mini Figure Bingo, a Kiddie Calf Show, and a Chicken Chucking Contest. Live music features Ozzy and Bon JoeB in the Festival Garden. The ECIPA Truck and Tractor Pull serves as the evening track event. Later on, Blain’s Stage in the Festival Garden hosts Ditch Lillies with support from Big Time Event Rentals and BMW Music.

Whimsical Stitching: Prairie Blooms (August)

Explore embroidery with instructor Candace Eudaley-Loebach in a welcoming session designed for beginners and beyond, open to participants from middle school age and up. The cost is $30. Learn to stitch a prairie bloom that you can wear year round, choosing a coneflower inspired motif or creating a playful variation through your color choices. Practice core techniques such as straight and stem stitches, cross stitch, lazy daisy, and french knots using an instructor-created prairie bloom sampler. Finish by securing your piece to a backing and transforming it into a necklace, keychain, or brooch.

The schedule includes the Foam and Bubble Show, multiple sets by Lasting Impressions, and performances by Grace Good. Track highlights include a Demolition Derby and Hot Laps for the Julien Dubuque Classic. In the Show Barn, the Open Class Beef Show and Showmanship take place. Activities also include BINGO and DuBrick’s Lego’s: A Day at the Races. Guests can meet drivers during a race car autograph session on the race patios and watch the Chicken Chucking contest finals. Scott’s Magic Show rounds out the entertainment. Live music in the Festival Garden features Li Li and The Dirty B’s on Blain’s Stage.

Stuff-A-Porta-Potty Contest - Dubuque County Fair

Participants ages 14 and up compete to see how many people they can creatively fit inside a porta potty, locking the door for 10 seconds to qualify. This intimate, peer-led evening offers mothers connected to NFTS a compassionate space to share memories of their angels, with room for laughter, tears, and healing. The conversation is guided by Allison Maahs, an NFTS mom and Director of Family Support, alongside Lindsey Backhaus and Marina Evanovich, both NFTS moms and Angel Ambassadors. The gathering takes place in a private room on the second floor of Hotel Julien Dubuque, with signs posted to help attendees find the space. Complimentary food and beverages will be provided. Jessie Rebik leads an exploration of painting as a visual language within Western art. It also looks closely at the material, physical, and expressive qualities of paint. No registration is necessary. A free-will donation is accepted. Taste of Dubuque: Friday Night 'Bad Ash BBQ' + Open Play

Taste of Dubuque Summer Series pairs dinner or treats from a rotating local food truck with open play for kids inside the cafe. Parents can enjoy a full coffee bar and other drinks, and there are smoothies, snacks, and kid-friendly options available inside. There is no need to cook or clean up. Order at the truck parked outside, then head indoors for playtime and refreshments. Open Play is available during the event, and you can stay as long as you like within your play pass time.
