Live music is part of the experience, and Pennyroyal will perform using some of the instruments they have brought back to life. Pennyroyal searches for neglected guitars, repairs them with care, and enjoys matching each instrument with a new owner. Tom started by maintaining his own gear, which led to learning repair work and reviving vintage finds that could be playable and beautiful again. When they are not tracking down and fixing instruments, Tom and Rachel perform acoustic music locally, having met through music and continuing to share it together.

Explore embroidery with instructor Candace Eudaley-Loebach in a welcoming session designed for beginners and beyond, open to participants from middle school age and up. The cost is $30. Learn to stitch a prairie bloom that you can wear year round, choosing a coneflower inspired motif or creating a playful variation through your color choices. Practice core techniques such as straight and stem stitches, cross stitch, lazy daisy, and french knots using an instructor-created prairie bloom sampler. Finish by securing your piece to a backing and transforming it into a necklace, keychain, or brooch.

Race Day and Demo Day at the Dubuque County Fair, presented by Dunkel Auto Salvage and McDermott Excavating, features family activities, live entertainment, and track events. The day begins with a sensory-safe visiting hour that includes activities. Visitors can stop by Old MacDonald’s Farm and explore Tiny Town, supported by Cole Trucking, Simon’s Lawn Care & Maintenance, Prairie Farms, CJ’s ATM Service, and Big Time Event Rentals. The Exotic Animal Zoo ground act is open to visitors, courtesy of TH Media. Creative spaces include the Creative Arts Building and Kids Korner. The Country Store carries medicine, miscellaneous items, and canned beverages. The Exhibit Hall and 4-H Building welcome guests, the mechanical bull operates later in the day, and a fairground rides special is available with a $35 ride bracelet. The schedule includes the Foam and Bubble Show, multiple sets by Lasting Impressions, and performances by Grace Good. Track highlights include a Demolition Derby and Hot Laps for the Julien Dubuque Classic. In the Show Barn, the Open Class Beef Show and Showmanship take place. Activities also include BINGO and DuBrick’s Lego’s: A Day at the Races. Guests can meet drivers during a race car autograph session on the race patios and watch the Chicken Chucking contest finals. Scott’s Magic Show rounds out the entertainment. Live music in the Festival Garden features Li Li and The Dirty B’s on Blain’s Stage.

Participants ages 14 and up compete to see how many people they can creatively fit inside a porta potty, locking the door for 10 seconds to qualify. Jessie Rebik leads an exploration of painting as a visual language within Western art. The program traces the rise of oil painting and its ties to realism and pictorial representation, then examines how artists across movements have approached the relationship between representation, surface, emotion, and meaning. It also looks closely at the material, physical, and expressive qualities of paint. No registration is necessary. A free-will donation is accepted. Bringing a lunch or a snack is welcome, and coffee and cookies are provided.

At Goose & Giggles Play Cafe, Craft Tuesday features a simple, hands-on project that little ones can make during open play. Setup and cleanup are handled, making it easy to enjoy a coffee while kids create. It is designed for toddlers and young kiddos who love to explore and stay busy. The craft is included with the purchase of an Open Play Pass and is available all day on Tuesdays. This session focuses on a Name Craft.
EDUCATIONAL SESSION: Medicinal Preparations
Clinical Herbalist Briana Cushman leads an educational session focused on creating herbal medicinal preparations. Order at the truck parked outside, then head indoors for playtime and refreshments. Open Play is available during the event, and you can stay as long as you like within your play pass time.
August Bee Tour at Convivium Urban Farmstead
Experience a tour that lasts two hours at Convivium Urban Farmstead, featuring a special stop to meet the bees. Afterward, a brief presentation explores the bee life cycle, what happens inside a hive, and the essential role bees play in our ecosystem. About half of the experience is spent in a seated classroom setting, with the remainder devoted to the tour. Participants can take home a honey-themed gift.
