Taylor, senior instructor with the Tam Tam Mandingue Djembe Academy, focuses on proper hand technique and timing through traditional djembe rhythms. Each lesson weaves in the oral history of the music, covering origins, purpose, ethnic groups, and locations, with maps used to enrich discussion and understanding. Instruction also includes dunun, the cylindrical bass drums, and dununs are provided. Djembe drums can be rented if needed for $5 per day to Taylor. A djembe specialist since 1994, Taylor teaches with an emphasis on carrying forward the traditions shared by Master Drummer mentors. Tuition is $20 per class, cash preferred, and the rate is negotiable for those experiencing financial hardship or for families with youth older than seven.
