NAA Monthly Meeting

The NAA Monthly Meeting features a presentation on the Vera C. Rubin Observatory and its plan to track a changing sky. The talk introduces the Legacy Survey of Space and Time, a ten-year, high-resolution mapping of the southern sky using the 8.4 meter Simonyi Survey Telescope and a 3.2 gigapixel camera, the largest built for optical astronomy. By imaging the southern sky every few nights, the survey will build a new kind of time record of cosmic change and will detect targets ranging from near-Earth asteroids and variable stars to supernovae and other short-lived phenomena, generating a continuous flow of data for discovery. The program covers the observatory’s instruments, observing approach, and main science goals, and it explains how amateur astronomers can engage with LSST through public alert streams, citizen science projects, and future data releases. Douglas Tucker is the speaker. His interest in astronomy began during the Apollo era and grew through years as an amateur observer. He studied physics and built a 10-inch Dobsonian, then earned a Ph.D. in astronomy at Yale University with research on galaxy clustering in the Las Campanas Redshift Survey. After postdoctoral work at the Astrophysical Institute Potsdam, he joined Fermilab and contributed to the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and the Dark Energy Survey. Since 2021 he has worked with the Rubin Observatory project on community science, validation and verification, and data curation.

Scout Swim Test / Mile Swim

At Vaughn Aquatic Center, this session provides the required Scouting swim test focused on safety and swimmer classification, along with an optional Mile Swim for those who qualify. The basic test is mandatory for all youth and adults before participating in water activities. It includes a safety component and a classification swim in which participants enter deep water with a feet-first jump, surface and level out, then swim 75 yards continuously using a strong stroke such as breaststroke, front crawl, or sidestroke. Without stopping, they add 25 yards on an easy backstroke for a total of 100 yards, followed by floating in place for at least one minute. Completing these steps earns Swimmer status, which grants eligibility for all open-water activities. Experienced swimmers who have passed the basic test may attempt the Mile Swim, a rigorous endurance challenge that can lead to the official Mile Swim BSA Award. It is often a goal for older Scouts working on the Personal Fitness merit badge or aiming for a substantial fitness milestone.

Naperville, IL - Spinning Babies® Workshop w/ Tammy - May 19, 2026

At Edward Hospital in Naperville, this hands-on Spinning Babies workshop offers a fresh look at childbirth by focusing on fetal rotation and the often overlooked physiology of birth. Participants learn practical ways to increase comfort in pregnancy and support smoother labor, recognize challenges earlier, and apply gentle strategies that may help shorten prolonged labor, reduce the likelihood of cesarean, and address malposition and labor dystocia with less force. The framework of Three Principles, Three Balances, and Three Levels Solutions uses baby’s position and physiological techniques to influence the effective dimensions of the pelvis through the body’s own capacity to resolve or prevent dystocia. Designed for professionals who care for people during pregnancy and birth, it welcomes midwives, nurses, nurse practitioners, doulas, childbirth educators, obstetricians, family physicians, prenatal yoga instructors, chiropractors, acupuncturists, massage therapists, perinatal case managers, and community health workers. It suits both those new to Spinning Babies and those with years of experience. Nursing Continuing Professional Development is available through ANCC for 7 contact hours, and the American Academy of Family Physicians grants 7.0 elective CME credits. Many doula and childbirth education organizations accept these hours according to their policies. Lunch is not provided. Comfortable clothing is recommended, and bringing a pillow, a flat sheet, and a yoga mat is helpful if available. The trainer, Tammy Ryan, has supported births since 2002 and is one of a small number of Spinning Babies trainers worldwide. Her experience includes service on the DONA International board and other boards, international training work beginning in the Democratic Republic of the Congo with World Health Organization–aligned instruction, and subsequent service in Haiti, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania, Kenya, Korea, Japan, India, Israel, and Brazil. She has presented at international conferences and in media and academic settings, worked with ministries of health, published in International Doula and on multiple blogs, and teaches When Survivors Give Birth to support survivors and the professionals who serve them. Public host information is available through Laura Eichhorn at Laura.Eichhorn@eehealth.org. For cancellations, email tammyryan@spinningbabies.com. This workshop serves as the prerequisite for Spinning Babies Integration Workshops, the Certified Parent Educator Training, and the Aware Practitioner Workshop. Resolving Shoulder Dystocia and Breech Basics can be taken beforehand, though attending this workshop first is recommended. Attendance provides documentation but not Spinning Babies certification. Participants may integrate the concepts and techniques into their practice, but the Spinning Babies name may not be used to describe services unless further qualifying training leads to a contractual listing or certification with permitted brand use. Organizations with tax-exempt status can indicate this during payment. If a tax exemption form has been submitted previously, a code from the organization may be used. Otherwise, a PDF of the exemption form can be uploaded during payment, with taxes refunded upon acceptance.

The Arcadian Wild

The Venue hosts The Arcadian Wild, an indie folk and pop trio from Nashville featuring songwriters Isaac Horn and Lincoln Mick alongside fiddler Bailey Warren. Their 2023 album, Welcome, opens a new chapter after a run of praised singles and EPs. Intro to Lighting & Portraiture - 2 Day Boot Camp

Learn to understand, control, and shape light to create stronger portraits in a two-day, small-group boot camp focused on lighting and portraiture. Instruction is led by Bill Skinner, whose career spans more than thirty years in wedding and portrait photography. The format combines clear technical guidance with artistic perspective and practical, real-world examples. Day one builds a foundation in how light works, how to apply it to a subject, and how to measure it for images with impact. Topics include key characteristics of light, the use of modifiers and other tools, proper metering, working with ratios when using multiple lights, approaches to photographing the face, classic lighting patterns, and corrective posing techniques. Day two moves into full hands-on practice with models. Participants work through guided setups using different backgrounds, continuous lights, speedlights, monolights, and a range of modifiers. Structured drills and exercises help turn new concepts into intuitive skills. Participants should bring a camera, lenses, a portable flash, fully charged batteries, a memory card, and a tripod. A light meter is helpful if available. There is a lunch break, with a brown bag option or nearby choices. Each attendee receives a complimentary 5-in-1 reflector from PROCAM to start a portrait kit.
