Irving Circle Park, 5703 University Ave, Indianapolis · verified Oct 2
    See details

Step away from the screen and spend three immersive hours shaping raw Indiana limestone in a hands-on workshop created for teens ages 13 to 17. Participants explore the geologic story of this 300-million-year-old rock, then practice with professional hammers and chisels to design and carve a piece to take home. No prior experience is required, as all tools and expert guidance are provided. The session encourages thinking in three dimensions, seeing the finished form within the block and bringing it out through steady, precise strikes. It is physical and dusty, with the satisfying ring of hammer on steel and a vibration that travels up the arm. Along the way, teens connect their own work to the legacy of master carvers who shaped landmarks like the Empire State Building, the Pentagon, and the Soldiers & Sailors Monument using the same Indiana stone. Everyone leaves with a tangible piece of history they created themselves.

Eagle Creek Park Earth Discovery Center, 5901 Delong Rd, Indianapolis · verified Oct 2
    See details

Explore phenology, the science of when seasonal events happen in nature, from spring blooms and autumn leaf color to bird migration. Tracking these shifts helps reveal how plants and animals respond to a rapidly changing climate, and long term observation is key. This hands on program teaches citizen science skills by monitoring twenty plant and tree species along the paved Pin Oak Trail across from the Eagle Creek Earth Discovery Center. Participants begin with a short training video, then head onto the trail to record observations using paper data sheets or the Nature’s Notebook app. You can also start a simple monitoring project at home, and once trained, volunteers are welcome to continue observing the phenology trail on their own schedule. The program is included with park entry, which is $6 per vehicle for Marion County residents and $8 per vehicle for visitors from outside the county. It is recommended for ages 12 and up. The walk is about one mile on pavement with a few moderate slopes. Activities may be canceled in inclement weather. For questions, contact dawn.vandeman@indy.gov or 463-325-3871.
