Heart Screening for Youth

A comprehensive youth heart screening is offered at the Porter County Health Department for participants ages 10 to 25 at a cost of $30. The visit brings several key checks together in one stop, including a health history questionnaire, measurements for height and weight, a blood pressure check, an electrocardiogram, and a limited echocardiogram. Parking is available in the garage off Napolean Street, and entry is through the second floor entrance. These screenings are provided in partnership with the Zac Mago Foundation.

King of the Hill 2026 Summer Friday's May 15 - Aug. 14 at 10pm 19th Annual Weekly Bowling Tournament

Part of the 19th annual summer King of the Hill series, this weekly stop features competition on the PBA26 Mike Aulby 39 foot oil pattern. Entry is handled on site with no advance sign ups. The event is open to all bowlers, and youth winners can opt for a scholarship or gift cards when awards are under the stated threshold. After open practice across lanes, starting lanes are randomly drawn. Everyone bowls a three game qualifier, moving one pair to the right after each game, with the tradition of the last lane cycling back to the first. The top 31 advance to seeded head to head match play. Qualifier ties are decided by a two ball total count roll off, and match play ties are settled with a one ball roll off where the higher seed chooses. Weekly points are earned for each game bowled, with a bonus point for the champion, and the top five in the standings receive a complimentary entry on finals night. The entry fee is $35 and includes the high game and series qualifier pots. Optional forward and reverse brackets are $5 each during qualifying. Estimated payouts based on 64 entries include $300 for first and $222 for second, with third and fourth at $120 each, fifth through eighth at $80 each, and ninth through 12th at $40 each. The top two finalists each week also earn a free entry for the following week, the top qualifier receives a $20 bonus, high game pays each game, and roughly one in four participants cashes. The 13 seed earns a complimentary entry the next week as a special perk. A Have A Ball option is available for $200 with drilling included, with balls distributed by the series finale or converted to a pro shop gift card if full payment is not completed by the stated cutoff. Finals night welcomes past champions and anyone who has bowled at least seven of the first 12 weeks, with added money and a $100 bonus challenge against Shaun. If you are short on weeks, a buy in is available at $10 per missed week. Expect a test on the left lane’s 52 foot Great Flood pattern and the right lane’s 28 foot Great Drought pattern. Kings Rules apply throughout the series, including the ability to alter surface or clean equipment at any time, the option to bowl right or left handed, and the use of any ball bearing a USBC serial number along with previously approved gear. Not all USBC tournament rules are observed, all decisions by the tournament director are final, and entries may be refused at discretion.

Valpo Corn Roast Fest offers a family-friendly evening at Central Park Plaza with unlimited locally grown corn, a variety of food trucks, games and activities for kids, and live music from two tribute acts. Wanted brings the hits of Bon Jovi, and Rhiannon celebrates the music of Stevie Nicks. Organized and sponsored by the Valparaiso Noon Kiwanis Club, this fundraiser channels proceeds back into the community through donations and grants to groups such as Hilltop Neighborhood House, Opportunity Enterprises, CoAction, the YMCA, the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Northwest Indiana, the Caring Place, and others. Children of elementary school age and younger receive free admission. Tickets are available in advance or at the gate for $30. Outside food, beverages, and coolers are not permitted.

Valparaiso’s community corn roast returns for its eleventh year with a family friendly festival presented by the Kiwanis Club of Valparaiso. This fundraiser benefits Valpo Noon Kiwanis, which directs proceeds to local nonprofits that support children and families in need, and also provides significant support to Riley Children’s Hospital of Indianapolis. The event features live tribute performances by Rhiannon, The Stevie Nicks Experience from Nashville, followed by an intermission and a set from Wanted, The Bon Jovi Tribute Band from Cleveland. In addition to the music, there is a kids area, an adult beverage tent, and a variety of food trucks. All you can eat corn is the star of the day, grown locally in Porter County, picked the day before, and roasted over an open rotisserie on site. Seating is on the lawn and chairs or blankets are welcome. Outside food and drinks are not allowed. Tickets are treated as a donation to Kiwanis, all sales are final, and the event takes place rain or shine.

This American Heart Association Basic Life Support course equips participants to recognize critical emergencies, perform effective chest compressions for adults, children, and infants, give rescue breaths using a barrier device, and deploy an automated external defibrillator as early as possible. Training follows the latest AHA updates to CPR and Emergency Cardiovascular Care and covers the BLS portion of the Chain of Survival, with practice focused on working as an effective member of a multirescuer team and relieving choking in adults and infants. The course is designed for prehospital professionals such as EMTs, paramedics, and firefighters, as well as providers who work in hospitals or other care settings, and it is also appropriate for healthcare workers and first responders, including staff in dental offices, nursing homes, and childcare environments. Participants should confirm with their employer that this is the correct course. Upon successful completion, a digital completion card will be emailed, it is good for two years, and delivery may take two to three weeks.

Advanced Fight Like a Girl Women’s Self-Defense Course

Celebrate the end of summer at Vino al Fresco 2026, a wine festival featuring tastings from local wineries. Your ticket includes festival entry, unlimited tastings, live music by The Village Ruckus, and a commemorative glass. The event takes place as a standing tasting at Thomas Centennial Park in downtown Chesterton, with limited seating available, so you may want to bring your own chairs or picnic blankets. Check-in is at Thomas Centennial Park on Broadway, and guests must show valid government-issued identification at check-in to prove they are 21 or older. Well-behaved, leashed animals are welcome.

Food Preservation

Learn practical food preservation techniques at this hands-on class focused on dehydrating and canning. You’ll walk through steps for preserving whole foods, reducing waste, and using ingredients year-round. The session also includes a follow-up canning workshop where you’ll create safe, delicious jars for your pantry. The class is taught by community member Becky and costs $20, with dehydrated samples and a take-home handout included. Class spots are limited and payment is required to secure a spot.

Heartsaver CPR Certification

Build confidence to respond in an emergency with the American Heart Association Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED course. Participants learn how to give first aid, perform CPR, and use an AED safely and effectively, following the latest AHA guidance for CPR and Emergency Cardiovascular Care. Those who successfully complete the class receive a Heartsaver course completion card that remains valid for two years. This training is designed for people with little or no medical background who need a card for work or regulatory needs such as OSHA, as well as anyone who wants to be ready to help when it matters. It is well suited for good Samaritans, lifeguards, babysitters, and staff at businesses or restaurants with AEDs on site. Instruction covers first aid fundamentals, how to recognize and respond to medical and injury emergencies, ways to handle environmental emergencies, strategies to prevent illness and injury, adult CPR and AED skills, and care for opioid-related life-threatening emergencies. Optional sections are available for child and infant CPR AED.

Join a beginner-friendly, hands-on welding and metal arts class where you’ll turn everyday discards into your own personalized metal sculpture or functional art piece. With no experience required, instructor Brianna will walk you through welding safety, basic torch handling and techniques, and how to join different metals, all while focusing on creativity and safety over perfection. All safety equipment, welding tools, and scrap materials are provided. Dress in natural materials like cotton and leather shoes. Class doors open at 12:30 PM, and the session runs for 2 hours.

Come on out for The Late-Summer Car, Truck & Bike Show & Swap Meet at the Porter County Fairgrounds. There will be hundreds of paved parking spots for show vehicles, plus over 500 swap spaces for vendors and sellers. Gates are open from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, with vendor setup starting at 6:00 AM and vehicle registration running from 7:00 AM to 11:00 AM. The beer garden runs from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM, and you can expect food vendors, refreshments, and lots of vehicle classes to check out. General admission is $5, vehicle registration is $5, and kids 10 and under are free.

Heart Screening for Youth

Youth ages 10 to 25 can receive a heart screening at the Porter County Health Department for a $30 fee. Each appointment includes a review of health history, measurements of height and weight, a blood pressure check, an electrocardiogram, and a limited echocardiogram. The screenings are offered in partnership with the Zac Mago Foundation. For convenience, park in the garage off Napolean Street and enter through the building's second floor entrance.

2nd Annual Valparaiso Firefighters Buddy Bash

A free-to-attend community benefit hosted by the Valparaiso Firefighters supports Project Fire Buddies, an organization that creates special days for local children facing severe illness. The Valparaiso chapter is one of the newest and has introduced three local fire buddies, and this event focuses on making meaningful memories for kids like them as they continue their fight. The evening features live music from Jukebox Heroes, door prizes, a 50/50 raffle, a cash bar, and food vendors. It is open to all ages, and while admission is free, donations to Project Fire Buddies are encouraged. All proceeds support Project Fire Buddies.

Popcorn Festival: The Automotive Showcase

Drivers' Gallery brings a curated automotive showcase to Central Park Plaza and downtown Valparaiso, featuring standout vehicles on display alongside automotive vendors and a rally of local food trucks. Spectator admission is free. Popcorn Pit Stop sets the tone for Popcorn Festival weekend by celebrating car culture and its history in a lively, downtown setting. This is a pre-approved display rather than a judged competition. Space for participating vehicles is limited, and applicants must submit their cars for approval. There are no trophies, the focus is on showcasing exceptional builds and connecting with fellow enthusiasts. The showcase is rain or shine, and approved vehicle tickets are non-refundable. Display vehicle registration will open in a few weeks, with an announcement to follow. Families can enjoy the Hot Wheels Race of Champions on a custom track over 60 feet long under the William E. Urschel Pavilion. Race entry is 1 dollar per car, and guests may bring their own Hot Wheels car or purchase one on site for 2 dollars. All race entry proceeds support local charities. The gathering is family friendly, pets are welcome, and Valparaiso Police Department will be on site for security. Parking for spectators is available throughout downtown and in public parking garages.

Heading to Popcorn Fest and need a place to park? VCC is hosting parking with a minimum $10 donation payable by cash or credit. All parking fees will be matched to support VCC and public art in Valpo. No registration or pre-booking is required. Volunteer support is also needed for Popcorn Fest parking. Four shifts will help with directing traffic and outreach, collecting payments, and setting up and taking down a tent, table, and signage. Each shift includes guidance from a Lead VCC Board member. Volunteers should dress for the weather and bring water. More details are provided upon signup.

Creekside Trails hosts a community-focused race presented by Valparaiso Firefighters Local 1124. Participants can choose a 5K trail run, well suited to beginners and casual runners, or form a team for a 30K relay that emphasizes endurance and camaraderie. The event highlights fitness, teamwork, and local spirit on a well-regarded Northwest Indiana trail network. Registration pricing for the 5K is $45 for early entry, $50 for regular, and $60 for late. MAACtoberfest

MAACtoberfest debuts as a community celebration that supports first responders and the lifesaving training they receive through the MAAC Foundation. Heroes Hangout and the nearby outdoor areas by the new HQ Building and Kathryn Hall will be reimagined as an Oktoberfest-inspired venue with food, music, games, and plenty of community spirit. Expect live German music and entertainment, outdoor activities and family friendly fun, German specialties alongside local favorites, and a selection of German and domestic beers, all in welcoming outdoor gathering spaces. Proceeds from this inaugural event directly support training and programs for first responders through the MAAC Foundation.
