    See details

Experience a balanced flow that blends movement with stillness. The session begins with a mindful vinyasa sequence that connects breath and motion, using intentional progressions to build strength and presence. It then shifts into yin and restorative practice, settling into floor-based postures for about three to five minutes. This focused time supports the fascia and other connective tissues of the lower body, creating a calming conclusion that helps you feel grounded and renewed. Guided by Brian Michalka. This approach nurtures more than just the muscles, encouraging overall physical balance and tissue health. The transition from active flow to sustained stillness also supports stress management by helping the nervous system shift from a heightened state toward rest and recovery. Energetically, it brings together yang and yin qualities... activity and repose, warmth and coolness, sun and moon... for a harmonious finish.

    Blue Wisp Big Band

Caffè Vivace, 975 E McMillan St, Cincinnati · verified Oct 2
    See details

Cincinnati’s Blue Wisp Big Band marks 45 years of big band jazz at Caffè Vivace in Walnut Hills. The ensemble features Jeremy Long and Jamie Walkenhauer on alto saxophone, Brent Gallaher and Dan Drees on tenor saxophone, and Larry Dickson on baritone saxophone. The trombones are Jeff Owen, Clarence Pawn, and Brian Stevens with Gary Langhorst on bass trombone, the trumpets are Jeff Folkens, Hank Mautner, John Zappa, and Kim Pensyl, and the rhythm section is Steve Schmidt on piano, Mike Sharfe on bass, and Jim Leslie on drums. Founded in 1980 by drummer John Von Ohlen and trumpeter Don Johnson, the band took its name from the original Blue Wisp Jazz Club. Von Ohlen came to Cincinnati after years with major jazz orchestras including those led by Stan Kenton and Woody Herman, and he teamed with Johnson to assemble the horn section. With Steve Schmidt and Michael Sharfe already working with Von Ohlen at the club, the rhythm core formed quickly. Regular Wednesdays at the Blue Wisp followed, recording began in 1981 with an LP sponsored by WKRC, and four more albums appeared on Fred and Helen Morr’s Mopro label. Those LPs were later reissued by Sea Breeze in the mid 1990s, including a set recorded in Los Angeles during a 1984 West Coast tour, and distribution brought attention and airplay across the United States and Europe. Alumni include trumpeter Tim Hagans and bassist Lynn Seaton. The group kept its Wednesday tradition at the Blue Wisp until the club closed in 2014, then appeared at Japp’s Annex downtown, had a brief run at Pirate’s Den in Westwood, and spent three years at Urban Artifact in Northside before establishing a new home at Caffè Vivace. A $15 drink and food minimum per person per set applies if the party’s beverage purchases do not meet the minimum. Seats may be released without refund if check-in has not occurred within 15 minutes after a set begins. Tickets are non-refundable. If attendance is not possible, a one-time transfer to a future Blue Wisp Big Band performance of equal value is available when requested at least 24 hours before the performance start.

Taft Theatre hosts an evening of blues featuring Tab Benoit alongside Ghalia Volt. Benoit, a four-time Grammy nominee, has spent more than three decades channeling the grit and soul of Delta swamp blues, earning five Blues Music Awards, including the BB King Entertainer of the Year twice, and a place in the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame. After more than a decade away from the studio, he returned with I Hear Thunder on his own Whiskey Bayou Records, achieving his first Billboard No. 1 in over 30 years. His earlier album Medicine, created with Anders Osborne for Concord, collected three Blues Music Awards. Beyond the stage, he champions the preservation of his home state’s wetlands through Voice of the Wetlands, received the Louisiana Wildlife Federation’s Governor’s Award for Conservationist of the Year, and appeared in the iMAX documentary Hurricane on the Bayou. Over the years he has worked with artists that include Willie Nelson, Dr. John, George Porter Jr., Maria Muldaur, James Cotton, Anders Osborne, Charlie Musselwhite, and more. Ghalia Volt brings a raw, high-voltage approach rooted in busking on the streets of Brussels and refined through deep immersion in Southern blues traditions. Armed with guitar and foot drums, she delivers a fiercely personal sound. Her release Shout Sister Shout! reached No. 2 on the Billboard Blues chart, marking a third straight Top 3 showing, and her resume includes appearances at New Orleans Jazz Fest and Telluride Blues & Brews, plus shared bills with Tab Benoit, Devon Allman, and Buddy Guy. Please note venue policies. A clear bag policy is in effect, with full rules and prohibited items listed on the theatre’s website. The session opens with vinyasa that synchronizes breath and motion, using purposeful sequences to cultivate strength and presence. It then shifts into yin and restorative work, settling into floor postures for about three to five minutes each to reach the fascia and connective tissues of the lower body. The blend satisfies the desire to move while also creating space for stillness and recovery, and it wraps up with a grounded, renewed feeling. Guided by Christy Read. This approach supports whole-body balance beyond just the muscles, helps train the nervous system to ease from a sympathetic state toward parasympathetic rest and digest, and brings energetic harmony by balancing yang and yin qualities such as active and passive, movement and stillness, sun and moon, warm and cool.
