    September Bison Saunter

    128 NW 150th Ln, Mindenmines · verified Sep 6
    See details

Explore Prairie State Park on a guided bison saunter that begins at the Regal Tallgrass Prairie Nature Center. A saunter is a leisurely stroll that favors unhurried observation, making it a fitting way to take in the prairie. The park preserves nearly 4,000 acres of tallgrass, a landscape that once covered about a third of Missouri and now remains in less than one half of one percent. With fall on the way, expect cooler temperatures, bison starting to grow their winter coats, and wildflowers blooming and preparing to set seed, so the prairie is especially active. Plan for at least two miles over uneven terrain. Because the herd’s location is determined the morning of the outing, bring water, snacks, a hat, insect repellent, sunscreen, and wear sturdy footwear. Weather can change quickly, so be ready for conditions, and consider binoculars for viewing bison and other wildlife. For the protection of this rare ecosystem and for visitor safety, pets are not allowed on park trails except on the Path of the Earth People and Path of the Sky People. Pets may be taken to the campground and picnic area when following Missouri State Parks pet rules, and service animals that assist people with disabilities may accompany their handlers. Registration is required and limited to 30 participants. To register, call 417-843-6711.
