Shimmy & Shine Annual Fundraiser Event 2026 - Countdown to World Bellydance Day

Celebrate dance, culture, and community while supporting a vital local nonprofit through a warm countdown to World Belly Dance Day. This initiative raises funds for The Nest, Center for Women, Children & Families in Lexington, KY, and invites participants to learn, give back, and shine on stage. Dancers of every age, level, and body type can register for two special group choreographies led by Safiya Nawaar. Training is offered in studio at Arabesque World Dance in downtown Lexington or from home via livestreams and video, with classes available on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Registration is $30 per choreography or $50 for both, and all proceeds benefit The Nest. The first choreography pays tribute to the Egyptian Golden Era with graceful arm pathways, deep shimmies, fluid Raqs Sharqi technique, and classic theatrical expression. The second, ASCEND, is a theatrical veil piece that develops sweeping wraps, flowing patterns, and striking accents so the silk moves with natural ease. Participants have the option to perform at the Feather the Nest fundraiser show at the Pam Miller Downtown Arts Center Black Box Theater, where the group pieces will be highlighted alongside a variety program that includes traditional Raqs Sharqi, folkloric favorites such as Saidi cane and Khaleegi hair dance, innovative fusion works, and select guest acts from other dance and music styles. The celebration continues with daytime Discovery Workshops at the Arabesque World Dance studio that introduce different styles, rhythms, and props. These sessions are donation based with all funds supporting The Nest, and no advance registration is required. Afterward, attendees are welcome to gather for a casual lunch at a local restaurant, with everyone covering their own meals and drinks. Choreography registrants will also be entered into a drawing for a four class card announced at the evening show. Whether learning in studio or online, participants can take as many sessions as they like, build skills with guidance from Safiya Nawaar, and be part of a meaningful community effort that makes a difference.

UK New Music Ensemble. Spring 2026

The UK New Music Ensemble, led by Juan Trigos, presents a program devoted to the creativity and breadth of contemporary music. The concert begins with Maurice Ohana’s Tiento for solo guitar, featuring Daniel Monroy. The exploration of color and lyricism continues in Leo Brouwer’s Elegía por Cintio Vitier, performed by Scarlet Haed on flute with Monroy on guitar. Cellist Holden Bitner brings Claudio Scannavini’s Da una visione del “ramo d’oro” to life, emphasizing its expressive scope and rich textures. The ensemble then performs Witold Lutosławski’s Chain 1, a compelling study in evolving form and controlled freedom. At the heart of the program are two world premieres by Trigos’s composition students at the University of Kentucky. Jeffrey Jones’s Idea’legy, performed by Chris Kim with ensemble, gives the cello a central role in a sound world of resonance, fragility, and transformation. Ángel Gómez’s Preludio, Fuga y Saturnal, created as the culminating project for a Master of Music degree, unfolds as an ambitious triptych for large ensemble, connecting tradition with innovation and spotlighting new compositional voices. THURS 5:30 PM - Bellydance Flow - All Levels - Spanish-Arabi Fusion

At Arabesque World Dance, an 8-week Night Bellydance Flow series with Safiya explores a rich Flamenco-Arabic fusion. The training blends Flamenco’s fiery expressiveness with the lyrical grace of Arab dance to develop a sophisticated movement language suited to studio practice and stage performance. Instruction is offered both in person and online, and the format welcomes all levels while providing meaningful challenge. Participants work on Flamenco rhythm, pulse, stamping, heelwork, and poised carriage, alongside Arab dance technique including nuanced isolations, elegant lines, undulations, hip articulation, and expressive storytelling. Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler’s dark musical arrives in a School Edition tailored for student performers. A Celebration of Women Songwriters

Tahlsound presents a celebration of women songwriters at the Oleika Temple Great Lawn in Lexington, featuring Abby Hamilton, Girl Tones, and Emily Jamerson. Abby Hamilton, from Nicholasville, Kentucky, is coming off a breakout year following her debut album “#1 Zookeeper (of the San Diego Zoo),” which earned wide praise. Known for compelling live shows, she recently appeared on CBS Mornings’ Saturday Sessions, has supported artists like Tyler Childers, Deer Tick, Shakey Graves, Wynonna Judd, Blackberry Smoke, Kelsey Waldon, and The Mountain Goats, and has taken the stage at Bonnaroo, AmericanaFest, Railbird, Luck Reunion, and more. Girl Tones, an energetic rock duo made up of sisters Kenzie and Laila, launched their early releases with producer Brad Shultz of Cage The Elephant on his Parallel Vision label in partnership with Big Loud Rock. Their work has been recognized by outlets including Rolling Stone, VICE, Consequence, PAPER, NME, DORK, and SPIN. Touring highlights include worldwide dates with Cage The Elephant and North American runs with The Velveteers, hey, nothing., Silversun Pickups, and Dexter and the Moonrocks, alongside festival appearances at Lollapalooza, Shaky Knees, and Austin City Limits. Rolling Stone praised their raw, proudly imperfect energy in contrast to the White Stripes. Emily Jamerson, a singer songwriter from Prestonsburg, Kentucky, blends Appalachian roots with country and folk influences shaped by artists such as Loretta Lynn, Emmylou Harris, and John Prine. With songs like “Run, Run Baby” and “Love Song,” she pairs soulful vocals with intimate storytelling and has performed at Laurel Cove Music Festival, Manchester Music Festival, Master Musicians Festival, The Burl, Manchester Music Hall, and Duke’s Indy. On site, look for cocktails by Castle & Key, beer by West Sixth, and food from Olmeda’s Mexican Grill. Friends of Tahlsound tables and general admission reservations are available. E Pluribus Horror Media Club

E Pluribus Horror is a media club that brings history and horror into conversation through books, films, and comics. Together, participants look at how the genre can surface difficult, often overlooked stories shaped by power, memory, fear, and what is left unspoken. Each meeting revolves around one shared work and invites a thoughtful, open discussion. No deep background in horror is required, only curiosity and a willingness to approach the past from unexpected perspectives. This session focuses on Lovecraft Country by Matt Ruff, a novel that blends historical fiction, pulp noir, and Lovecraftian elements as it follows Atticus Turner, a Black man journeying to find his missing father in 1950s Jim Crow America. The narrative pairs the everyday brutality of segregation with uncanny dangers, using familiar horror devices to underscore the realities of systemic racism. The gathering takes place at Lexington Public Library - Tates Creek Branch. Looking ahead, planned selections include Wolfen, The Buffalo Hunter Hunter, and the comic or graphic novel Finders Keepers and the Image Horizon Experiment.
