After Dark: Creole Death & Mourning Tour

New Orleans · Gallier House, 1132 Royal St

Gallier House is presented in a period of mourning, offering a close look at 19th century Creole Catholic practices surrounding death and remembrance. Set after the unexpected passing of James Gallier Jr., the tour traces Mrs. Gallier’s experience of grief and shows how ritual, faith, and community shaped daily life during bereavement in Victorian New Orleans. Rooms are arranged as a household in mourning, with veiled mirrors, wreaths, and examples of hairwork jewelry that once signaled loss. Through authentic furnishings, historical interpretation, and the true stories of the Gallier family and others connected to the home, the experience opens a window into the emotions and customs that guided families through life’s most certain passage. Topics include mourning etiquette, funerals held within the home, the meaning behind attire and jewelry, the role of religion, and the realities of epidemics and high mortality. It also considers how Mr. Gallier Jr.’s death affected those who lived and worked in the residence, offering broader insight into Creole culture and society. This is a history-focused program, not a ghost tour. After the walkthrough, a complimentary libation is offered in the courtyard for quiet reflection in this historic setting.

This ongoing volunteer opportunity helps care for a sacred space so it remains welcoming and well tended. Volunteers pitch in with a wide range of tasks, including dusting and wiping surfaces, sweeping and mopping floors, tending house plants, arranging flowers or offerings, straightening the altar and other sacred areas, organizing the Freedom Library, restocking essentials, taking out trash and recycling, maintaining outdoor areas and entryways, greeting and directing visitors, setting up and breaking down for ceremonies, making light supply runs, and assisting with administrative work. No special experience is required. A willing heart and readiness to serve are what matter. Modest, covered clothing is requested out of respect for the space, and all tools and cleaning supplies are provided. National Kidney Foundation of Louisiana’s New Orleans Golf Tournament

New Orleans · English Turn Golf & Country Club, 1 Clubhouse Dr

Set at English Turn Golf & Country Club, the National Kidney Foundation of Louisiana’s New Orleans Golf Tournament brings golfers and community supporters together for a relaxed day on the course that benefits kidney health across the state. The tournament uses a shotgun start, with breakfast and lunch included, and a Bloody Mary and Screwdriver bar available during registration. Foursomes are encouraged. Kidney disease is often called a silent condition because people can lose significant function before feeling sick. In Louisiana, about one in three people is at risk and many are unaware, so early detection, education, and access to care are essential. The tournament raises awareness of living organ donation, which can change the course for someone awaiting a kidney transplant by offering an alternative to years of dialysis and a path back to better health. Proceeds support the National Kidney Foundation of Louisiana’s work throughout the state, including kidney health screenings, patient assistance, education, transportation support, and programs for kidney and transplant patients and their families.

Halloween 2026 - A Silent Film & Live Music Experience

New Orleans · Marigny Opera House, 725 St Ferdinand St

Silent-era cinema meets live sound in a Halloween program at the Marigny Opera House. Two haunting works from the early years of film are paired with an original score by Jeff Pagano for string quartet and electronics, performed live. Charles Klein’s 1928 The Tell-Tale Heart adapts Edgar Allan Poe into a nerve-tightening portrait of guilt, as a killer cannot escape the imagined throb of a buried heartbeat. Louis Feuillade’s 1915 Les Vampires, Episode 3, Irma Vep, starring Musidora, follows its enigmatic antiheroine as she attempts a bold crime while journalist Philippe Guérande draws near to the gang’s secret world. The music comes to life with Kate Walter on violin, Elizabeth Crute Cunha on violin, Sixto Franco on viola, and Jake Fowler on cello, with B. Danos and Jeff Pagano shaping the electronic textures. Psychological fright and surreal intrigue converge in an immersive evening inside one of New Orleans’ most atmospheric venues, where shadows stir and certainty slips away.
