Read moreRead lessThis guided movement class introduces the 5Rhythms practice, using a variety of maps, clear instruction, and simple exercises to help participants drop into the dance. There are no steps to memorize, and the focus is on listening to the body’s own wisdom. During the session, one rhythm is highlighted while the full wave of flowing, staccato, chaos, lyrical, and stillness is also explored. There is time to arrive and move at your own pace, then follow gentle invitations offered through music and brief verbal prompts. You may be encouraged to deepen your solo dance, partner for a moment or longer, or join the larger group. Each gathering unfolds uniquely because you, the group, and the teacher are different every time. Newcomers are welcome, and an archival demonstration by founder Gabrielle Roth is referenced for those curious about the roots of the work. To support dancers with scent sensitivities, please come fragrance free by avoiding perfumed detergents, lotions, hair products, and essential oils as much as possible. Consent and courtesy shape all contact on the dance floor. Because the practice is nonverbal, make eye contact before initiating touch. If touch is not welcomed, communicate with a word or a clear signal such as a small bow, crossed arms, or stepping away. All are recognized and welcomed across race, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, ability, body size, language, and age. The space is intended to be accessible to all bodies. This gathering honors the Nipmuc, Pocumtuc, and Nonotuc peoples. The Native settlement where Northampton now stands was known as Norwottuck or Nonotuck, meaning the midst of the river. Respect is offered to those who lived, moved, and worked on this land.

Continuing Not to Die
Florence · Bombyx Center for Arts & Equity, 130 Pine St
Read moreRead lessContinuing Not to Die is an intimate stage work conceived, choreographed, and performed by Michal Shahak, a long time somatic trauma therapist from Jerusalem who brings a deeply personal creative inquiry to the stage. Rooted in intuitive, embodied practice, the piece welcomes audiences into a shared, accessible space for honest human expression. Emerging in the wake of war, the work traces a period when Shahak, a Body-Mind Centering practitioner, felt estranged from her own senses and movement practice. When movement yielded no material, she turned to poetry, language, and imagery, shaping a choreographic response to an overwhelming reality. The piece reflects on the erosion of shared values, common ground, and social fabric in present day Israel, and lingers on the shift from living to merely existing, granting that state a dignified presence. Through this process, the act of making became a sanctuary, giving voice, shape, and motion to unspoken landscapes of grief and loss. Created in 2024, the work also engages with questions surrounding the legal rights of the dying. Original music is composed by Maya Belsitzman, with artistic guidance from Ayelet Ulman. Headshots are by Wassilios Nikitakis and performance photography is by Nino Herman. A Q&A with the artist follows the performance. This presentation is part of a weekend of additional workshops, Moving Through: Reflections and Performance on Times of Crisis, with guest artist Michal Shahak, held at Congregation B’nai Israel in Northampton. Co sponsored by Congregation B’nai Israel, Beit Ahavah, and Friends of Women of Vision, with generous support from the Jewish Federation of Western MA.

Kaleta & Super Yamba Band
Amherst · TheDrake, 44 N. Pleasant St
Read moreRead lessPresented by DSP Shows, Kaleta & Super Yamba Band bring a vibrant blend of Afrobeat and Juju to The Drake in Amherst. The Brooklyn band is led by Benin-born singer and guitarist Leon Ligan-Majek, known as Kaleta, who spent his youth in Lagos, Nigeria. His distinctive guitar work led to tours and recording with Fela Kuti, King Sunny Ade, and Lauryn Hill. After early performances in church in the late 1970s, he joined King Sunny Ade’s group, then toured the world with Fela Kuti’s Egypt 80 throughout the 1980s and into the 1990s. Now based in New York City, he has guided Super Yamba Band since 2017. Their debut album, Mèdaho, released by Ubiquity Records, channels gritty, psychedelic textures inspired by the sounds that moved Kaleta in 1970s Benin. The title means big brother, elder, or teacher, paying tribute to his late brother who introduced him to funk and soul. Bandcamp highlighted the record among the summer 2019 standouts, and two songs appeared in the ABC and Hulu series High Fidelity featuring Zoe Kravitz. The group’s presence across the United States has grown with appearances at major festivals and venues, including a 2019 set at the Apollo, a segment on Adult Swim’s FishCenter Live, and a moment on VICELAND when Action Bronson paused his own show to hear more. Following a breakout performance at Paste Magazine’s Emerging Music Festival in New York City, Afropop Worldwide praised Kaleta’s James Brown–style vocal flourishes.

An Evening with Tom Rush at BOMBYX (Northampton, MA)
Florence · Bombyx Center for Arts & Equity, 130 Pine Street
Read moreRead lessPresented by DSP Shows, this concert at BOMBYX features Tom Rush, the acclaimed singer, guitarist, and storyteller whose performances blend dry wit, resonant vocals, and a distinctive guitar touch across folk, blues, and narrative songs. A pivotal presence in the 1960s folk revival and later resurgences, he has shaped generations of musicians, with figures like James Taylor and Garth Brooks noting his influence. Early in his career he introduced audiences to writers such as Joni Mitchell, Jackson Browne, and James Taylor, while his own songs have traveled widely between genres. After foundational albums on Elektra, including The Circle Game that helped usher in the singer songwriter era, he embraced folk rock on Columbia and toured extensively, later pausing to recharge before returning to sold out halls. He went on to launch the Club 47 series, pairing celebrated artists with rising talent and bringing those showcases to national listeners through PBS and NPR. Expect an evening of sharp storytelling, heartfelt ballads, and soulful blues from an artist whose legacy continues to resonate.

Amythyst Kiah
Northampton · The Iron Horse, 18 Center St
Read moreRead lessAmythyst Kiah headlines an evening of immersive songwriting and genre-blending sound. The Tennessee-born artist recently introduced Still + Bright, a release that looks inward, touching on Eastern philosophies, a deep connection to nature, and formative years as an anime-loving mall goth. Produced by Butch Walker at his Nashville studio and released on Rounder Records, it builds on the roots-leaning alt-rock of her 2021 breakthrough Wary + Strange, which received recognition from Rolling Stone and Pitchfork. The music moves from gritty guitars and industrial-tinged rhythms to luminous pedal steel and her graceful banjo, tracing stories of growth and self-discovery. Her creative path also includes work with Our Native Daughters alongside Rhiannon Giddens, Leyla McCalla, and Allison Russell, as well as collaborations with Tim Armstrong, Sadler Vaden, and Avi Kaplan. Tickets start at $26.40 with fees included, and prices are higher on the event day.
