Now in its 18th year, this Kayak-a-thon welcomes kayaks, stand up paddleboards, and canoes for a choose-your-distance paddle on the Connecticut River. Participants can take on a 12 mile route from Sunderland to Northampton or a 5 mile option from Hatfield to Northampton. The goal is to raise $70,000 to help keep 230 free or low cost outdoor recreation programs running across Massachusetts each year for people of all ages and abilities. Registration is required and capped at 100 paddlers, so early signups are encouraged since past editions have sold out. Each boat has a $250 fundraising minimum. This event takes place rain or shine, and timing or locations may be adjusted if high wind, lightning, or high water are in the forecast for safety. He devoted nearly half a century to the West Springfield Lions Club, served four terms as president, and was recognized as a Melvin Jones Fellow for humanitarian service. Many also knew him through music. For more than forty years he played the bagpipes with the Springfield Kiltie Band, performed at the John Boyle O’Reilly Club, and helped bring people together at local social events. She served as the Harnish Visiting Artist at Smith College from 2005 to 2012 and again in 2016, and she lives in Holyoke, Massachusetts.

Whether you plan to race, take it easy with friends, or show up to cheer, everyone has a place at the start and plenty of cider donuts wait at the finish. Taking place just before Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October, the event serves as a meaningful kickoff for community support. Proceeds benefit Alianza DV Services, which offers free and confidential advocacy, shelter, prevention, and support for survivors of domestic violence and their families in the region. Registration covers entry to either the 5K or the fun walk and includes a water bottle. Finishers receive a cider donut and cider, followed by a celebration. Participants who raise 100 dollars receive an official event shirt, and every step helps strengthen community support for survivors.

A day of choro and samba with Água de Moringa and vocalist Mariana Baltar features a musician workshop and a concert at Bombyx. The Rio-based ensemble is in the United States to teach at Choro Camp New England in Marlboro, Vermont, and is offering a three hour introductory workshop that welcomes choro curious players. The session covers a short history of the style, the roles of different instruments, and the rhythmic families within choro, then gives participants a chance to play three pieces together in contrasting rhythms. It is suitable for string players both plucked and bowed, fretted or not, as well as winds, percussion, keyboard and accordion. The workshop also serves as a starting point for an ongoing weekly choro study group to be launched locally by Brazilian guitarist Mauro Correa. The concert continues the spirit of Choro Noho, which gives the community a taste of what artists connected to Choro Camp New England bring to the region. This program of samba and choro features Água de Moringa with Mariana Baltar. Based in Rio de Janeiro for more than 35 years, the group’s foundation is in traditional choro, reflected in an instrumentation that includes 6 and 7 string guitars, cavaquinho, pandeiro, bandolim and clarinet. With ten albums to their name, they have performed and taught across Brazil and in France, Portugal and Colombia. Baltar, a vocalist and dancer who collaborates frequently with the ensemble, recorded a full album with them titled Os Arcos Paixão e Morte, a tribute to composer Aldir Blanc. The Westover Galaxy Community Council brings back its Run the Runway experience with support from the Westover Metropolitan Airport team and military partners at Westover Air Reserve Base. Participants can run or walk directly on the runway at what is described as the nation’s largest air reserve base. The Chicopee St. Patrick’s Parade Committee is hosting its first annual golf tournament to raise funds for community involvement and charitable giving across Greater Chicopee. Across four full days, participants design and build a personal guardian figure that can embody protection, memory, or hope. Working from personal photos, writings, or sketches, attendees learn traditional slab construction and modeling to create and assemble a free-standing sculpture measuring roughly 16 to 20 inches tall. Instruction covers building hollow forms, adding distinctive textures and details, and developing individualized plans for successful construction. Alongside the main piece, participants make single-part plaster press molds to add ornamentation and enrich the surface. Teaching blends demonstrations, guided practice, and lecture. His work is held by the National Museum of Mexican Art in Chicago, the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C., and the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm. He holds a BFA from the University of Texas at El Paso and an MFA from the University of Washington, and he is an assistant professor at the Tyler School of Art and Architecture in Philadelphia.
