Sunday Serenades: Greg Piccolo and Heavy Juice

Plymouth · Spire Center for the Performing Arts, 25 Court St

Part of a matinee series known for its refined, spirited programming across smooth jazz, classical crossovers, and Broadway favorites, this installment features Greg Piccolo with Heavy Juice. After more than six decades onstage, Piccolo is recognized as a leading tenor sax voice and now steps forward as a lead singer, spotlighting his album “Who Knows What the Future Holds.” Drawing on songs crafted over three decades, he shares stories shaped by triumphs and challenges, delivered with clarity, humor, and heartfelt intensity. Expect an ever-shifting mix that can move from rhythm and blues originals to rock and roll, traditional jazz, and blues, with occasional touches of reggae and global grooves. Performances are fully in the moment, with no set list and a free-flowing approach that comes straight from the source. Piccolo’s journey began with his first band in Westerly, Rhode Island at age 13, followed by twenty-five years in the renowned horn section of Roomful of Blues. Since departing in 1994, he has led Heavy Juice into a third decade, marking his 60th year as a performing artist in May 2024. His playing draws deeply from tenor sax greats like Illinois Jacquet, Lester Young, Ben Webster, and Red Prysock, while adding his own signature phrasing. The current touring setup can range from a four-piece core with organ or piano and bass, drums, guitar, plus Piccolo on vocals and sax, with the option to expand with a three-piece horn section for larger stages. Honors include multiple Blues Music Award nominations and induction into the New England Music Hall of Fame. Along the way, he has recorded with or shared the stage with artists such as Pat Benetar, Steve Ray Vaughan, Jimmie Vaughan and Tilt -A-Whirl, Eric Clapton, Big Joe Turner, and Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson.
