    The Travelin’ McCourys

Spire Center for the Performing Arts, 25 Court St, Plymouth
    See details

The Travelin’ McCourys grew out of forward motion, not a plan. Brothers Ronnie McCoury on mandolin and Rob McCoury on banjo learned bluegrass onstage with the Del McCoury Band, honing their craft through nightly shows. Discipline, responsibility and restraint shaped their path, and with Jason Carter, Mike Bub and later Alan Bartram they helped define a sound that was precise, powerful and rooted, with the audience at the center. As bluegrass entered new spaces and jam listeners embraced acoustic music, they saw longer sets, open-ended solos, surprise covers and bold choices create a different kind of energy. Wondering where the music could go when the rules loosen, they let a new approach develop outside the Del McCoury Band. It took shape in late-night sessions and eventually stood on its own. The Travelin’ McCourys carry that journey into the present, blending deep tradition with an adventurous spirit.

Part of a matinee series known for its refined, spirited programming across smooth jazz, classical crossovers, and Broadway favorites, this installment features Greg Piccolo with Heavy Juice. After more than six decades onstage, Piccolo is recognized as a leading tenor sax voice and now steps forward as a lead singer, spotlighting his album “Who Knows What the Future Holds.” Drawing on songs crafted over three decades, he shares stories shaped by triumphs and challenges, delivered with clarity, humor, and heartfelt intensity. Performances are fully in the moment, with no set list and a free-flowing approach that comes straight from the source. Piccolo’s journey began with his first band in Westerly, Rhode Island at age 13, followed by twenty-five years in the renowned horn section of Roomful of Blues. Since departing in 1994, he has led Heavy Juice into a third decade, marking his 60th year as a performing artist in May 2024. His playing draws deeply from tenor sax greats like Illinois Jacquet, Lester Young, Ben Webster, and Red Prysock, while adding his own signature phrasing. The current touring setup can range from a four-piece core with organ or piano and bass, drums, guitar, plus Piccolo on vocals and sax, with the option to expand with a three-piece horn section for larger stages. Honors include multiple Blues Music Award nominations and induction into the New England Music Hall of Fame. CHRISTMAS WITH THE CELTS

Spire Center for the Performing Arts, 25 Court St, Plymouth
    See details

Christmas with The Celts brings the energy of a nationally televised PBS special to the stage with a production that grew from broadcasts on more than 200 PBS stations across the U.S. and Canada, as well as on the BBC in Ireland for three years. Demand from those airings led to annual appearances in performing arts centers, theaters, and major casinos. The first live show took place before a sold out crowd at the Ryman Auditorium, home of the original Grand Ole Opry and honored by Pollstar as a top venue, and the tour has now celebrated 14 years on the road nationwide. The performance blends timeless Irish Christmas carols and step dancing with modern holiday songs arranged on traditional Celtic instruments. Each season introduces new Christmas selections, original material, and fresh dance tunes, so no two tours are exactly alike. Playful onstage banter and quick Irish humor mix with the excitement of high-energy dancers. The music moves from spirited takes on familiar holiday favorites that get audiences clapping to heartfelt ballads supported by rich string arrangements, and a children’s choir adds an extra touch of seasonal warmth. Founder and producer Ric Blair describes the experience as one that brings people together across generations through the shared joy of Celtic music and dance.
