His vibrant tone and quicksilver improvisation reflect years of guidance within Detroit’s jazz lineage led by his father, trumpeter Marcus Belgrave. Recent original works continue that momentum, with Dual Citizen offering a first look into his musical upbringing and professional craft while exploring bold new sounds. His training includes studies with Andrew Bishop, Benny Green, and Robert Hurst at the University of Michigan, followed by an assistantship at Michigan State University under Diego Rivera and Rodney Whitaker. The 27-year-old has also been deeply active across Detroit’s musical landscape, moving fluidly through Latin, R&B, and techno settings. Taking the stage as the Kasan Belgrave Sextet, the ensemble reflects the same circle of mentorship that shaped him. The group features bassist Jonathan Muir-Cotton, currently rotating in Christian Sands’ trio, drummer Louis Jones known as WavyLou who has recently worked with ELEW and Johnny O’Neal, and pianist Brendon Davis, a virtuosic voice who studied briefly with Chick Corea and is established in gospel composition and arranging. Trumpeter Allen Dennard brings a trailblazing sound and has shared stages with Dwele and Mike Phillips, while Michael Abbo, adept on both trombone and bass, has performed with Johnny Oneal and Dafnis Prieto.
