    Kasan Belgrave

    Detroit · Cliff Bell's, 76 Adams Ave W

Saxophonist Kasan Belgrave takes the spotlight as a composer and bandleader, channeling early bebop and modern jazz with flashes of fusion and gospel. His vibrant tone and quicksilver improvisation reflect years of guidance within Detroit’s jazz lineage led by his father, trumpeter Marcus Belgrave. Recent original works continue that momentum, with Dual Citizen offering a first look into his musical upbringing and professional craft while exploring bold new sounds. His training includes studies with Andrew Bishop, Benny Green, and Robert Hurst at the University of Michigan, followed by an assistantship at Michigan State University under Diego Rivera and Rodney Whitaker. He has toured as a multi-woodwind artist with Jazz at Lincoln Center with Wynton Marsalis, appeared in residencies curated by Terri Lyne Carrington, and performed with Karriem Riggins and Etienne Charles. The 27-year-old has also been deeply active across Detroit’s musical landscape, moving fluidly through Latin, R&B, and techno settings. Taking the stage as the Kasan Belgrave Sextet, the ensemble reflects the same circle of mentorship that shaped him. The group features bassist Jonathan Muir-Cotton, currently rotating in Christian Sands’ trio, drummer Louis Jones known as WavyLou who has recently worked with ELEW and Johnny O’Neal, and pianist Brendon Davis, a virtuosic voice who studied briefly with Chick Corea and is established in gospel composition and arranging. Trumpeter Allen Dennard brings a trailblazing sound and has shared stages with Dwele and Mike Phillips, while Michael Abbo, adept on both trombone and bass, has performed with Johnny Oneal and Dafnis Prieto. Their close-knit rapport drives a powerful, cohesive sound around Belgrave’s evolving vision.

    Konrad Lee's Pre-Halloween Shenanigans

Detroit · Batch Brewing Company, 1400 Porter St

Celebrate the spooky season a little early with a lively variety showcase led by Konrad Lee, a versatile lounge singer with acrobatic vocals, Detroit ties, and a noted fondness for Red Roof Inns across the country. He reconnects with long-time collaborators for an evening of music, juggling, old-school vaudeville flair, balloons and bubbles, risqué verse, and delightfully surreal clowning. Award-winning artist One Single Rose appears with a resume that spans poetry, playwriting, spoken word, music, acting, and filmmaking, including three self-published poetry collections with both nice and naughty chapbooks, plus distinctions such as the inaugural Detroit Black Music Spoken Word Award and being the first poet published after the Broadside-Lotus Press merger. Goiter the Clown explores the clown condition by blending Joneser philosophy, reflective musings, and a streak of mayhem designed to spark the human psyche. From Grand Rapids by way of Chicago, Will Juggle brings sharp humor, champion-caliber skills, and an award-winning beard. Rounding out the bill, Cleveland’s husband-and-wife duo Pinch and Squeal deliver musical neo-vaudeville mischief full of whimsy, knowingly corny sentiment, high-octane antics, and timeworn jokes, calling to mind a mix of Penn and Teller with Burns and Allen. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door.

Expect a set that nods to foundational releases like Machine Gun Etiquette, The Black Album and Strawberries, alongside later work such as Evil Spirits and Darkadelic, where baritone vocals, melodic hooks and incisive guitar work keep the music’s punk heart beating while widening the sonic palette.

    Authors!

    Toledo · Main Library

Bethany Joy Lenz appears in Toledo as part of the Authors! series to preview her forthcoming novel, The Betrayal of Cora Wexford. She will discuss why she chose to write a psychological thriller in Victorian London, share insights into her creative process, reflect on shifting from nonfiction to historical suspense, and describe how research into social history shapes her storytelling. The program includes a 45 minute talk followed by a short audience Q and A, and each admission comes with a copy of the book. Set in 1880s London, the story follows Cora Wexford, a 38 year old American expatriate who earns her living by painting portraits of the dead. Hoping to leave old secrets behind, she meets the charming Miles Vale while also accepting a commission from a suffragist to portray everyday women the system has overlooked. When a string of murders surfaces that echoes crimes associated with Jack the Ripper, Cora’s work becomes a dangerous fixation. As her sense of reality and her bond with Miles grow increasingly unsettled, she is forced to face a chilling unraveling close to home. Lenz is a New York Times bestselling writer whose memoir Dinner for Vampires was named to Time’s best of the year list. Known for her starring role in One Tree Hill, her screen work also includes Grey’s Anatomy, Dexter, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and Hope Valley: 1874, and she is active as a recording artist, composer, and fine artist.

    The Poisoner

Detroit · Marygrove Conservancy, 8425 McNichols Rd W

At Marygrove Conservancy in Detroit, The Poisoner concludes a seven-city run with a story rooted close to home. This neo-noir stage thriller, sparked by the Flint water crisis, follows a reporter who returns to his hometown and uncovers a contaminated water supply, setting off ripples that are both deeply personal and politically charged. First presented in 2024 at New York’s La MaMa Experimental Theatre, the play marks the debut of Port Huron native M. M. Haney, with direction and development by two-time Obie Award recipient Lee Sunday Evans. The piece unpacks deception, the misuse of authority, and systemic negligence tied to early-2000s Midwestern water policy, asking audiences to consider a pressing question... how safe are we, really? Though fictional, the work highlights ongoing struggles in communities such as Flint, Jackson, and Newark, calling for accountability and constant vigilance in decisions that affect public health. It pays tribute to the persistence of journalists, artists, and activists who continue to elevate community voices in the pursuit of justice and change. Limited to three performances. Students and seniors with valid ID can take $5 off with the code FIVEOFF. Post-show conversations with special guests are planned, with further details to be shared.
