Bookscapes Wild Card Book Club: The Shadow Key

Saginaw · Bookscapes, 6235 Gratiot Rd

The Bookscapes Wild Card Book Club features a conversation about The Shadow Key by Susan Stokes-Chapman, a Gothic mystery from the bestselling author of Pandora. The novel follows Dr. Henry Talbot, recently dismissed from a prestigious London hospital, who accepts a position as private physician to the enigmatic Lord Julian at Plas Helyg, a remote estate in rural Wales in the late eighteenth century. Struggling with the language and the wary superstition of nearby villagers, Henry discovers that the previous doctor died under unsettling circumstances and begins to investigate. His unexpected ally is Linette, Lord Julian’s independent cousin, who manages the estate on her own terms, declines traditional dress and marriage, and looks out for the men working in Julian’s mines despite his objections. With a mother beset by puzzling spells and long held doubts about the village, Linette joins Henry as secrets rooted in Welsh folklore emerge. The discussion focuses on the book’s haunting setting, its unfolding dangers, and the intertwined destinies of Henry and Linette.
