    Contra Dance

Tapestry Folkdance Center, 3748 Minnehaha Ave, Minneapolis · verified Oct 2
    See details

This contra dance in the Large Studio at Tapestry Folkdance Center features a beginner-friendly lesson followed by an evening of social dancing. A caller leads a welcoming walk-through so participants can learn each figure together, then continues prompting once the music starts. The style shares roots with old time square dancing, but it is danced in longways sets with partners facing down the hall. You do not need to arrive with a partner, as partners typically change throughout the night and every dance is taught. The music draws on rich acoustic traditions, often led by fiddle, with influences that include New England, French Canadian, Irish, Scottish, Cape Breton, and contemporary tunes. If the event has live music, admission is $15 for general entry, $12 for Tapestry members, $8 for young adults ages 18 to 30, $4 for youth ages 10 to 17, and free for children under 10. If music is recorded, admission is $12 for general entry, $10 for members, and $7 for young adults and youth ages 10 to 21. Pay What You Choose pricing is available during the first seven days of every month. No prior dance experience is required. Comfortable shoes, curiosity, and a willingness to move are encouraged.

Presented by The Cedar, Canadian blues and Americana artist Jesse Roper headlines with Mae Simpson. Hailing from Victoria, British Columbia, Roper folds his own experiences into upbeat, engaging songs that balance modern, indie-leaning blues with vivid storytelling and standout guitar work. Known for high-energy performances, he has shared stages with Booker T. Jones, Colin James, Beth Hart, and Burton Cummings. Minneapolis-based Mae Simpson opens with a commanding voice and magnetic presence, backed by horns and drums and a sound that blends funk, soul, rock, R&B, pop, and country. The band’s catalog includes the EPs Feel It Comin’ and Did You Make It Back and the full-length Chandelier & Bloom. Simpson has appeared with artists such as Dermot Kennedy, Grace Potter, Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe, Robert Clay, Ike Reilly, Langhorn Slim, RubbleBucket, and Pert Near Sandstone, with performances at First Avenue’s main room, The Fillmore in Minneapolis, the Basilica Block Party, Live On King Street in Madison, and the Blue Ox Music Festival. Windlass presents an evening of shadowy melodies and urgent rhythms at Cloudland Theater with The Secrecy, Autumn, and Velour Tomb. The Secrecy, emerging from Indianapolis’ underground, crafts a modern, cinematic take on goth‑inflected post-punk, uniting brooding atmosphere with propulsive beats and sweeping hooks. Early singles premiered with Decibel Magazine and Post-Punk.com, and the band now steps forward with its debut full-length, Pins and Needles.
