Meg Anderson, THE MEMORY OF BORROWED BOOKS

Spencer Road Branch Library, 427 Spencer Road, Saint Peters · verified Oct 4
    Free

Main Street Books presents an evening with debut author Meg Anderson in conversation with author Michelle Collins Anderson to celebrate the forthcoming novel The Memory of Borrowed Books. Admission is free, and registration is encouraged. Books will be available to purchase at the event, and both authors will sign afterward. Entry to the signing line requires purchasing a copy of The Memory of Borrowed Books from Main Street Books. Set in the coastal town of Foxhollow Bay, the story follows librarian Claire Ashford, whose carefully structured life is shaken when the centuries-old library she calls home faces closure. During a late-night walk among the shelves, she discovers a hidden door that leads to a secret room filled with books no one else can see. Each book immerses her in memories left by those who once visited, revealing clues that point toward a way to save the library. With demolition drawing near and one book pulling her back again and again, Claire begins to see that the key to preserving the place she loves may be rooted in her own past. The novel pays tribute to community and hope, exploring what is at stake when cherished spaces and the memories they hold are threatened, and how what we fight to keep can, in return, protect us. Meg Anderson writes contemporary fiction with a bookish magical realism bent. She lives in Indiana with her college sweetheart, their three children, and four very opinionated cats. When she is not writing, she is often tackling laundry or reheating the same cup of coffee. She lives with multiple sclerosis, a part of her life but not the whole, and believes in the power of stories to comfort, connect, and spark joy even through difficult chapters.

Alfred Hitchcock’s landmark thriller screens outdoors on the backlot patio. Frequently copied and, at times, curtailed by censors, this 1960 classic reshaped horror cinema. Drawing on Robert Bloch’s novel, which echoed aspects of the Ed Gein case, the tale starts as a tense crime drama about a young woman, played by Janet Leigh, who escapes with $40,000, then shifts into a nerve-tightening portrait of Norman Bates, portrayed by Anthony Perkins. Praised by Roger Ebert for the way it speaks to primal fears, and featuring the legendary shower sequence, Psycho still chills more than six decades later.

Not Just for Virtuosos: Why Every Piano Student Should Play Liszt

Steinway Piano - St. Louis, 12033 Dorsett Rd, Maryland Heights · verified Oct 4
    See details

Many teachers view Liszt as the domain of virtuosos, yet his catalog includes a wealth of pieces that suit intermediate students and even promising beginners. This session dispels that notion and makes the case for bringing Liszt into everyday instruction, showing how his intimate understanding of the piano can build technique, refine tonal color, and strengthen expressive playing. It also opens the door to the imaginative worlds that inspired him, from poetry and literature to visual art, landscapes, and sacred themes, offering concrete ways to teach character, atmosphere, and musical storytelling. Through a tour of repertoire at varied levels, attendees will leave with practical strategies for incorporating Liszt and guiding students to grow both artistically and technically, with music that is approachable and engaging for a range of abilities. The presentation is led by Dr. Jorge Modolell, a pianist and musicologist focused on nineteenth-century music and the life and works of Franz Liszt. He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music and a Ph.D. from Washington University in St. Louis. His recent research centers on Liszt’s connection to St. Francis of Assisi and the composer’s Franciscan-inspired works. His scholarship has appeared in the Journal of the American Liszt Society, and he has presented at regional and national gatherings, including meetings of the American Musicological Society, the University of Miami Graduate Musicology Forum, and the Brandeis University Musicology Conference. In 2024 he was invited to lecture at the University of Georgia for the American Liszt Society’s 60th anniversary, and he is slated to lecture again for the Society at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln this year. He serves on the piano faculty of Webster University’s Community Music School, teaches music history as an adjunct at Washington University in St. Louis, and is Vice President of Membership for the Saint Louis Area Music Teachers Association. As a performer, he has appeared as a soloist with the New World School of the Arts Symphony Orchestra in Miami and performs regularly with local groups including the Rubinstein Club, the Chaminade Music Club, and the Piano Society of St. Louis.

Trail runners converge at Greensfelder County Park for a looped challenge on the DeClue Trail, an 8.2-mile circuit run counter-clockwise that starts and finishes near the yellow gate by the trailhead close to the Visitor’s Center. Choose a distance that fits your goals, from one loop at about 8 miles to two loops for 16 miles, three loops plus for a full marathon, or four loops for a 50k. Each distance offers awards for the top female and top male, and race swag is included with registrations made by the listed deadline, with the possibility of extra shirts or swag for late registrants. The course features rolling hills and technical terrain. Runners in the 50k, 8-mile, and 16-mile distances begin at the yellow gate and head toward Round House before turning left onto DeClue. Marathon participants also start at the yellow gate, take a quick right for a 2.4-mile loop on Dogwood Trail, then continue onto DeClue. A manned aid station with snacks and Tailwind awaits around the 3-mile mark, and a water station is positioned near 6.2 miles just across Scenic Road. After a left onto Eagle Valley Trail, the route climbs to the top behind the Visitor’s Center and returns across the street to the yellow gate start and finish. The course will be clearly marked with orange flags and signs to keep runners on track. This is a cup-free event, so carrying personal hydration is strongly recommended. Tailwind is available at the start and finish area as well as at the 3-mile aid station, with water and grab-and-go snacks on course and pre-packaged food at aid stations and the finish. Drop bags can be placed near the start and finish for access between loops. Parking is available within Greensfelder County Park, including near the Visitor’s Center, at Muckerman Shelter, and at the gravel lot by the road to Round House. Race registration and headquarters are set at the yellow gate at the DeClue Trailhead. Expect to walk along the road between parking and registration, and use caution around traffic near race headquarters. Packet pick-up takes place at the trailhead at the gravel parking lot near the gravel road to Round House. St. Louis Track Club members automatically receive a $10 discount when registering with the email associated with their membership. After the finish, participants can enjoy beer, non-alcoholic beer, and snacks. Sponsors include Tailwind and 4 Hands Brewing Company.

At Family Arena St. Charles in St. Charles, MO, Tire Rack Street Survival offers hands-on driver training for teens focused on safety and real-world skills. Participants practice controlling their own car at its handling limits, apply driving physics, improve decision making, react more quickly, and learn to anticipate the behavior of other drivers. This full-day school combines classroom instruction with coached driving exercises in each student’s vehicle. Across roughly two hours split into three classroom segments, topics include proper seating and hand position, mirror setup, the tire contact patch, weight transfer concepts, long-range vision, situational awareness, and the challenges of distractions such as radios, phones, or too many passengers. On course, students work through wet skid control, rapid lane changes for collision avoidance, threshold braking with ABS, and a slalom to feel weight transfer. When feasible, additional drills cover recovering with two wheels off the pavement and understanding the risks of tailgating. A semi truck may be staged with cars around it so students and accompanying adults can sit in the cab and experience how many vehicles disappear in the blind spots, and an airbag deployment demonstration may be used to reinforce safe hand placement. Parents are encouraged to stay for the day, attend the classroom portions, and speak with instructors who are available to answer questions about the activities. Lunch is provided for students, parents, and volunteers, and educational demonstrations are offered during the break. The course fee is $175.
