Underwater Forest

Science Café on the Coast presents Underwater Forest at Biloxi Public Library, featuring LSU scientist Dr. Kristine DeLong, whose work centers on paleoceanography and paleoclimatology. The talk explores a prehistoric bald cypress woodland hidden beneath the Gulf of Mexico about 13 kilometers off the Alabama coast. Long protected under seafloor sediments and likely uncovered by a hurricane, these ancient trees date back tens of thousands of years, when sea levels were more than 20 meters lower. Dr. DeLong will explain how researchers study this rare site, what it reveals about the last glacial interval roughly 70,000 to 50,000 years ago, and how it helps illuminate past environments and shifting shorelines. The setting is relaxed and welcoming for attendees without a strong science background, and light refreshments will be provided. Admission is free and open to all. Science Café on the Coast is a collaboration among The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast Library, the Harrison County Library System, Long Beach Public Library, the Hancock County Library System, Infinity Science Center, and Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College.

Reclaiming Your Calm: Biofeedback Nervous System Reset

Persistent stress can linger even when rest does not help, and that often points to a nervous system that needs care. This two-hour workshop offers a clear, practical look at how the nervous system shapes daily experience and how to gently guide it back to steadiness. With biofeedback technology, you will see heart rate, breathing, and subtle patterns in real time, then observe how those patterns shift during guided meditation and simple regulation practices. The focus is not on forcing relaxation, but on building awareness, trust, and supportive habits that help the body return to a grounded, balanced state. You will come away with an understanding of why the nervous system can feel stuck, along with straightforward tools you can use to access calm in everyday life. The price is $35 per person, and space is limited. The workshop is led by Katie Mason, a Licensed Professional Counselor who has served the Gulf Coast since 2015. After time in Florida, she pursued advanced specializations in Mind-Body Medicine and Biofeedback Therapy, which now anchor her holistic approach. Informed by her own experiences with mental health, addiction, and trauma, her work centers on healing at the root level through the nervous system. Biofeedback therapy is supported by decades of research and gives clients real-time insight into how stress, anxiety, and trauma show up in the body, making the process tangible and empowering. Katie emphasizes strengthening the connection between mind, body, and spirit to support lasting healing and growth.

Summer Camp Week 2 (Ages 8-12)

At the Ohr-O’Keefe Museum of Art, this second week of summer camp invites ages 8 to 12 to explore textiles, beadwork, and nature inspired art while spotlighting the materials and craftsmanship of Southeastern tribes. Campers learn how Native communities transformed grasses, fibers, feathers, and clay into works that were both useful and decorative. The week begins with nature weaving on cardboard looms using raffia, yarn, feathers, and dried grasses. On Tuesday, participants study images of Southeastern beadwork and craft patterned beaded bracelets, discovering how color and repetition can convey stories and identity. Midweek turns to animal symbolism, as students paint on canvas boards to express a personal animal spirit through meaningful symbols and thoughtful design. Thursday focuses on traditional clothing materials and techniques, culminating in paper doll attire created with fabric scraps and mixed media. The finale is a Biloxi Mini Art Market Day where campers display and trade their handmade pieces while learning about historic trade among Southeastern tribes. A packed lunch is required.

The Mushroom Brotherhood

Led by Hammond B3 organist and pianist Wayne Sharp, The Mushroom Brotherhood offers a richly detailed celebration of The Allman Brothers Band. The production aims to place audiences inside a classic-era concert with era-true visuals, lighting, period gear, and seasoned players. Sharp’s connection to this music runs deep. He grew up on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, spending long nights onstage with Jaimoe and Lamar Williams, who would go on to play with The Allman Brothers Band. Around that time, encouraged by songwriter Jackie Avery, Jaimoe met Duane Allman and the band’s story began. Sharp later lived in Macon, Georgia next door to the group, sharing music and forging lifelong bonds. After Berry Oakley’s passing, Lamar joined the band. When the group disbanded in 1980, Sharp invited Jaimoe and Lamar to California for his original project, The SharpShooter Band, which continued until Lamar’s death in 1983. In the years that followed, Sharp performed with Elvin Bishop and launched an early tribute, The Allmost Brothers, a concept suggested by Gregg Allman while Sharp was recording and producing him in Los Angeles. That group made a special appearance at GABBA Fest and was well received. Sharp then spent more than a decade with Alligator Records artist Michael Burks, appearing on four albums and earning two Blues Music Awards. After the losses of Burks, Butch Trucks, and Gregg Allman, he revived Gregg’s idea and created The Mushroom Brotherhood. Jaimoe has voiced strong support for the project and praised how closely Sharp carries the band’s spirit. This tribute honors the legacy, camaraderie, and joy at the heart of The Allman Brothers Band, reigniting the look, the sound, and the unmistakable atmosphere of their stage presence. The road goes on, and the brotherhood continues.

6 Week Adult Handbuilding Pottery Class

Learn the art of handbuilding in a six-week pottery course that balances solid technique with room for personal style. Each session builds on the last as you turn clay into both functional and decorative pieces. Instruction covers pinch pot forming, coil and slab construction, surface decoration and texturing methods, and the application of underglazes and glazes. Projects are designed to develop technical skills while encouraging exploration, and the course is welcoming to beginners as well as those with prior experience. The aim is to guide participants through multiple projects and help them gain the confidence to continue creating independently. Attendance is important since the curriculum progresses week to week and makeup classes are not offered. Depending on complexity and pace, some pieces may take longer than the six sessions. Work can be continued afterward during Open Studio hours for an additional fee, and those not planning to use Open Studio are encouraged to coordinate with the instructor so project timelines can be adjusted. Because clay is unpredictable during drying, firing, glazing, and handling, occasional cracking, warping, or breakage may occur.
