Sun & Ski Sports - Charlotte Group Ride

Sun & Ski Sports, 10710 Providence Rd, Charlotte · verified Sep 25
    See details

A weekly, weather dependent group road ride rolls out from the Sun & Ski Charlotte store parking lot and follows a scenic, rolling route through South Charlotte, Waxhaw, and Marvin in North Carolina, continuing into Lancaster County, South Carolina. Multiple pace groups are offered so cyclists of many experience levels can find a comfortable fit, with an emphasis on fitness, camaraderie, and community. Advanced options cover roughly 35 to 42 miles. The fastest group averages 20 mph or more and is a true drop ride with no regrouping or rest stop. A slightly slower advanced group averages about 18 to 19 mph, uses tight pacelines, includes one rest stop, and allows limited regrouping, but is still a drop format. A steady advanced option averages about 16 to 17 mph over approximately 27 miles, features pacelines, one rest stop, and several regroup points, and is considered semi-drop. Intermediate groups typically ride 27 or 35 miles at around 17 to 18 mph with pacelines, one rest stop, and several regrouping opportunities in a semi-drop setting. A beginner pace around 14 to 16 mph over roughly 27 miles may be added based on interest, focusing on conversation, endurance, and skills development with one rest stop and a no-drop approach. Groups depart in short intervals to keep riders organized. Basic mechanical help and last-minute purchases are available at the store before roll-out. Helmets are required. Riders should arrive with a bike in good working order, know how to handle simple repairs, and manage their own hydration and nutrition. Road bikes are strongly recommended. Front and rear lights, protective glasses, and gloves are encouraged. Riders are expected to follow safe riding practices, stay on the correct side of the yellow line, and keep at least one hand on the bars at all times. Know the route or have it downloaded in case of separation, and carry a cell phone and an emergency contact. Routes may include sections with urban traffic, and participants are responsible for their own safety. The ride aims to highlight and support the cycling community, promote wellness through structured group outings, and maintain an inclusive environment where no one is left out, while recognizing that some faster groups operate with drop or semi-drop policies.
