ConfluenceBook Signing with Amy Kennedy
Celebrate poet Amy Michelle Kennedy and her third collection, Where the Wildflowers Grow, at a book signing. Meet the author and pick up a copy of her new book of poems. These poems chart a way back toward light after deep loss, grounded in survival, quiet strength, and reverent remembrance. The collection speaks to those who kept growing even when no one saw, to survivors learning to rise again, and to gentle souls who carry beauty alongside their scars. Kennedy writes from the still spaces between grief, healing, and becoming. Her language is soft and steady, unafraid, like wildflowers that keep blooming after a storm. Amy Michelle Kennedy is a poet and writer whose work explores faith, nature, resilience, reflection, and the nuanced layers of being human. She began writing at seventeen after the death of her mother, finding in poetry a place to breathe, belong, and make meaning. Her work blends honesty with themes of wilderness, hope, grace, and connection, inviting readers to slow down and listen to themselves, to others, and to the world. She lives in Charlotte, North Carolina, with her sister, Lisa, and their dog, Stella Rose, and she finds inspiration in forests, shifting skies, quiet trails, and the natural world. When not writing, she enjoys time outdoors, caring for animals, photography, and music.

Her background includes a bespoke historical clothing business and work in the museum field, ongoing collaborations with museums, and a wide ranging collection of original apothecary and beauty items, along with related artifacts, archives, and manuscripts. A community road ride sets out from the Sun & Ski Sports parking lot in Charlotte, taking on rolling terrain through South Charlotte, Waxhaw, Marvin, and into Lancaster County, South Carolina. Multiple pace groups welcome a wide range of abilities, with advanced distances often spanning 35 to 42 miles. Options include an A group averaging 20 mph or more with no regrouping and no planned rest stop, a B group averaging 18 to 19 mph with tight pacelines plus one rest stop and limited regrouping, and a C option of about 27 miles at 16 to 17 mph with one rest stop and several regroup points. Intermediate routes are typically 27 or 35 miles at 17 to 18 mph with a rest stop and several regroup points. A beginner pace of about 27 miles at 14 to 16 mph may be added based on interest, designed as a conversational, skills-building ride with one rest stop and a no drop approach. All riders must wear a helmet, and road bikes are strongly recommended. Front and rear lights, glasses, and gloves are suggested. Participants are expected to bring their own hydration and nutrition, know basic bike repairs such as fixing a flat and adjusting brakes, carry a phone and emergency contact information, and know the route or have it downloaded in case of separation. Ride with care around urban traffic, keep at least one hand on the bars at all times, and do not cross the yellow line. Participation is at personal risk and each rider is responsible for their own safety on and off the bike.

This multi-session course explores Barbie as a cultural and historical figure, considering how a plastic doll has remained recognizable across generations and borders while mirroring shifting ideas about social roles, beauty, work, and consumer identity. The instructor is Dr. Sandra Watts, a Teaching Professor with roles in Languages, Cultures, and Translation and in Interdisciplinary Studies, and Academic Director of the B.S. in Professional Studies at UNC Charlotte.
