By the end, expect improved boat control, techniques for covering distance without tiring your arms, practical ways to read currents and avoid hazards, and the confidence to plan future outings with friends and family. The group meets at Car Bodies Boat Ramp in Mandan, where parking is available. From there, participants board a shuttle to an upriver launch at Hoge Island, with departures running on a prompt schedule. The downstream paddle from Hoge Island takes about 1.5 hours. A sandbar lunch is included during the trip, featuring a sandwich and chips, along with time to ask questions and connect with fellow paddlers. The experience involves walking up and down an incline, and registering indicates you are physically able to participate.

The BCBC Summer Series wraps up the MTB season at Sleepy Hollow Theatre & Arts Park with a final evening of racing. Learn how to enliven watercolor landscapes in a two-hour workshop led by artist Kimberly Eslinger. The session focuses on using light through contrast and layered washes to build depth and interest. Topics include selecting watercolor paper, creating dimension with successive layers, managing color density, working with gouache, acrylics, resists, masking tape, or gel pens, adding and lifting pigment, techniques for painting bushes, choosing watercolors, and practical artist tips that simplify the process. Participants are welcome to bring cold-pressed 180 lb paper, a No. 8 round brush, any watercolors they already have, a watercolor palette, a stiff waterproof board for taping their work, and reference photos for inspiration. If these items are not available, extras will be available by request through BAGA. The class fee is $25 for BAGA members and $30 for non-members. Eslinger is an illustrator, painter, sculptor, and fairy house builder whose watercolor illustrations appear in Sonnets for the Journey by Deone Emineth.

The Cardio and Coffee Trail Running Series returns to Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park with a blend of outdoor fitness and specialty roast coffee. Each gathering begins and ends at the Commissary Gift Shop on Cavalry Square, where a park interpretive ranger leads a unique route and provides maps for an unmarked course on the park’s multi use trails. Expect dirt and gravel surfaces with moderate hills and some uneven ground, which are not suited for strollers. The pace is generally moderate at about 10 to 12 minute miles for roughly 4 miles, with an average running time of 50 to 60 minutes and one or two brief stops to keep the group together. Runners are welcome to follow the ranger’s pace or choose a slower speed that fits their comfort level. After the run, enjoy a tasting of specialty roast coffee on the Commissary Store deck accompanied by a short educational talk from park staff. All ages are welcome, though participants are encouraged to be able to comfortably run a 5K without assistance and to consult a healthcare provider before starting moderate exercise. Wear supportive running shoes, come prepared for dirt, gravel, and grass, and consider bringing a small water container for warm mornings. Restrooms in the Commissary building are available before the run. Weather related cancellations or changes may be announced on social media the morning of the run. Light rain or rain from the previous night may not result in cancellation. This series is free with a North Dakota State Parks Annual Pass, or a vehicle registration fee is required at the park entrance. The event is sponsored by the North Dakota Parks and Recreation Department and Coal Country Coffee Company. Series dates are planned across multiple Saturday mornings and may be subject to change.

Lights Out - Stars Out brings stargazers together at Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park’s Cavalry Square and Parade Ground for a guided look at the night sky. Visitors can settle in early to find a good vantage point and watch the sky shift from dusk to darkness. A partial lunar eclipse will be visible with peak obscuration near 94 percent. During this celestial event, Earth passes between the Sun and the Moon, casting a shadow that can appear reddish orange, often called a Blood Moon. Park staff and members of the Bismarck Astronomy Club will help participants use telescopes, spot constellations, identify planets, and examine lunar craters. Telescopes and binoculars are available, and personal equipment is welcome. Red-light flashlights are recommended to preserve night vision, and regular flashlights should be kept on a low beam. All ages are welcome. Restrooms are available in the Commissary building adjacent to the parade ground. Admission is free with a North Dakota State Parks Annual Pass, or available with a per-vehicle fee at the park entrance. Annual passes can be purchased at the park or online. Any wearable light-up items are welcome. Along the route, UV lighting and music stations create a festive glow-party atmosphere. Harvest Hike: Walking Trivia
This family-friendly hike begins at the Visitor Center and concludes at the historic On-A-Slant Village. Along the way, a Park Ranger leads walking trivia that highlights the traditional crops cultivated by the Mandan people. The route is easy to moderate, is stroller-friendly, and welcomes pets that are leashed and cleaned up after at all times. After the hike, participants help harvest the Three Sisters Garden, gathering heirloom corn, beans, squash, and sunflowers grown by the Mandan people for generations. Everything you help harvest can be taken home while supplies last. During the harvest, park staff share how Mandan communities planted, tended, and stored their crops, the tools they used, and how these foods sustained their communities. Bees and other pollinators frequent the sunflowers, so anyone with bee allergies should take precautions and maintain a safe distance. Gardening tools are provided. The schedule is subject to change.
