Dia de los Muertos: Sourdough Cinnamon Roll Workshop

    Papillion · Loft 22, 134 N Washington St STE 2

Experience a hands-on baking workshop that honors Día de los Muertos, a tradition that remembers loved ones through food, flowers, music, stories, and celebration. The session begins with a warm cinnamon roll inspired by pan de muerto and a glass of house-made jamaica while background on the holiday and its customs is shared. Participants then work with a portion of the bakery’s sourdough, learning to roll and shape orange-scented dough, make a cinnamon orange filling, assemble and cut the rolls, and prepare them to bake at home. Attendees leave with four orange sourdough cinnamon rolls plus icing, along with decorating sugar to add after baking. The experience includes hands-on guidance from the bakery team, baking instructions, a Día de los Muertos guide, and Latin music in a colorful, festive setting. No prior baking experience is required since the dough is prepared in advance so the focus is on shaping and creativity. The recipe is the bakery’s own, inspired by the flavors, colors, and spirit of the season, and is not traditional pan de muerto, though orange and cinnamon are familiar in Mexican baking. Early bird tickets are available, spots are limited, and the price is $45 per person.

    Christmas Bird Count for Kids

    Gretna · Schramm Education Center

Explore the winter birds of Schramm Education Center while taking part in a long-running community science project. Participants can choose a hike through the prairie or down to the Platte River, where they will record the number and types of birds they see. The group will then gather in the classroom to tally the results and make bird crafts. The hikes cover about a mile, and trails may be muddy or slippery depending on the weather. The count takes place in all weather, so participants should dress accordingly. A limited number of binoculars will be available, and participants are encouraged to bring their own if they have them. The collected observations contribute to the Audubon Christmas Bird Count, a winter census that helps researchers understand bird population trends.
