LRLS: Session 2, week 3

Session 2, week 3 of this competitive, PDGA-sanctioned disc golf league for women brings the traveling series to Seymour Smith Disc Golf Course. The league spans nine weeks with events rotating among courses within roughly 25 miles of the Omaha area. League nights are typically on Tuesdays during the season, and start times may vary, so participants should check UDisc for the latest schedule details. Series payouts are based on the average of each player’s top three scores, with the top two finishers in each division paid at the end of the series. Participants who play week to week only do not qualify for series payouts. Payouts are sent electronically, and players will be asked to share where to send theirs at the end of the session. A free UDisc account is required for league and live scoring. Costs are $30 for the full nine-week session or $5 per week.

This free support group offers a compassionate space for anyone grieving the loss of a pet, with the option to share or to simply listen among others who understand. No registration is required, and walk-ins are welcome. The sessions are led by Kendra McCallie, a mental health therapist with 25 years of experience, including roles in hospitals and community health centers, plus 17 years in private practice. An animal lover who has also experienced pet loss, she fosters supportive conversation so participants can share their stories and find understanding. Meetings take place in the NHS Friends Forever room.

At the Joslyn Castle Carriage House, Car-Centric, a locally made documentary by director Joseph Giitter, will be shown, followed by a conversation with experts in urbanization, environmental stewardship, and bicycle safety advocacy. The film explores how Omaha shifted from a downtown-driven economic and cultural hub to a community highly dependent on cars, and considers the impacts on safety, sustainability, and economic development. It also looks at how transportation choices and city planning could shape a more connected future. The conversation will cover everyday commuting and getting around the city, alternative transportation options, and planning approaches. Waco-born Huser Brothers bring a soulful, high energy take on country to the Front Room at Slowdown, pulling from original material including the Find My Way EP and songs like Dancefloor, Highway, Tired of Runnin, and Honey. They have built a following in the independent scene, earned the 2025 TCMA Country Band of the Year, and shared stages with artists such as Koe Wetzel, Parker McCollum, Treaty Oak Revival, Dylan Scott, and Gary Allen. Josh Watson performs with Watson&Co., his longtime collaborators Daniel Shea and John Mitchell, as they prepare a debut album that will feature both band tracks and solo performances. This is an all ages show. Tickets are $15 in advance or $20 on the day of the show.

An exhibit of pressed botanical art by Holly Lukasiewicz highlights the beauty of seasonal plants gathered from along the Missouri River in Omaha. Each pressed and framed work brings together stems, leaves, blossoms, petals, and pods, arranged into flowing compositions that seem to move across the frame. Viewers may notice words and familiar shapes, such as hearts or the word LOVE, formed by the contours of each plant element. The materials come from a personal garden, native prairie species, local flower farms, and commercial growers in South America. The artist regards each piece as a note of gratitude to the natural world. Included with paid garden admission. Free for garden members. Working with District 2 Floral Studio, Lukasiewicz blends her experience as an art educator and environmentalist to create flora-based works that honor the fleeting nature of each season. Her practice is rooted in local agriculture and sustainable design that supports the well being of both local and global communities. She encourages connections to sustainability through beauty and flowers, offering workshops, flower subscriptions, event work, custom installations, flower preservation services, and ecoprints.

Traveling Through Gardens showcases Lynette Fast’s vibrant wall pieces that are made to be lived with and looked at, pairing everyday enjoyment with bold artistic expression. Rooted in the natural world and shaped by the people and places around her, these unique works draw on personal narratives and respond to the rooms they inhabit. With an affection for eclectic settings, the collection highlights individuality while bringing beauty and meaning into daily life. Rich color and texture, a love of gardens, and a commitment to teaching and lifelong learning run through the exhibit, inviting visitors to experience art as a personal and shared journey that sparks connection and growth. An artist and educator for more than 38 years, Fast has taught learners from preschool through adulthood, a path that informs both her creative process and her approach to teaching. Her practice spans jewelry and metalsmithing, painting and drawing, sculpture, and pottery, reflecting a spirit of exploration. She has shown work across the region for more than 17 years and is represented by five galleries, with numerous exhibitions throughout Nebraska. Her community involvement includes private instruction, work with Lincoln Public Schools, and contributions to the Nebraska Art Teachers Association and the LUX Center for the Arts. Recognition includes the 2025 Lincoln Artists’ Guild Spring Best of Show, the NATA Roscoe Shields Service Award, and multiple ANAC selections and awards. The exhibit is included with regular garden admission, and garden members receive free entry. In keeping with Lauritzen Gardens’ support of local creators, the presentation celebrates botanical inspiration drawn from the garden’s collections and the enduring connection between art, nature, and the community.

Rollin’ Down the River

Summer is still rolling with a relaxed float on the Elkhorn River, with tubes linked together and the current setting an easy pace. Volunteer guides will help navigate the route so participants can settle in and enjoy a day on the water. Shuttle rides are provided for participants with vision loss between Outlook Nebraska and Tubing and Adventures before and after the float. Friends and family can participate as well, but they must arrange their own transportation and pay the $30 tube rental. Exceptions to the transportation requirement may be available for those willing to help drive participants who are unable to do so.

Comic Con Nebraska is a newly launched event from Octopus Events Group (OEG), which introduced the show in Omaha as its first production. OEG brings together the founders of Emerald City Comic Con, Rose City Comic Con, and Calgary Comic & Entertainment Expo, along with the founders of Epic Photo Ops. The convention focuses on comic books and is designed to be friendly for all ages. Tickets will be available to the general public, with additional details to be announced.

Second Sunday Talk Shifting Borders: The Battle for Carter Lake & Lake Manawa

Explore how a shifting river reshaped state lines at a Second Sunday Talk at Metro Community College, Fort Omaha Campus, Building 10, Room 110. Historian Troy Stolp examines the late nineteenth century moment when the Missouri River changed course, forming Carter Lake and Lake Manawa and setting off years of legal disputes and conflicting land claims between Iowa and Nebraska. Drawing on historical research, maps, photographs, and storytelling, he traces how floods, geography, politics, and the courts combined to create a boundary unlike any other in the United States. The presentation explains why Carter Lake belongs to Iowa even though it is surrounded by Omaha, and how Lake Manawa became a major regional recreational destination while drawing interest from both states. Troy Stolp is a Lewis Central High School graduate with a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology and Religious Studies from Iowa State University, a Bachelor of Arts in History from Buena Vista University, and a Master of Arts in History from the University of Nebraska at Omaha. He serves on the boards of Preserve Council Bluffs and the Historical Society of Pottawattamie County, has been involved with the Council Bluffs Historic Preservation Commission, and has worked with the Durham Museum. Recognized for engaging programs and deep knowledge of local history, he offers a clear look at the Missouri River’s lasting impact on communities on both banks.

This FolkHouse concert at the Joslyn Castle Carriage House features Brad Colerick, a singer and songwriter originally from Nebraska. He hosts Wine & Song, a weekly South Pasadena showcase he has led for 14 years, building a supportive community of musicians, songwriters, and fans. On stage he engages the audience with light banter and stories between songs. He also develops new material at the Jacaranda Veranda series, where music impresario John Antich suggested a compilation, helped choose the tracks, and served as executive producer. Tickets are $25. Plant to Give at Mulhall's offers a simple way to support neighbors facing food insecurity. Grow a little extra in your edible garden and bring the surplus to be donated in collaboration with Whispering Roots. The fresh harvest will be turned into nutritious meals for local shelters, and it will also be shared directly with underserved communities across the city. Donations are accepted Friday through Sunday during store hours, and Whispering Roots will pick up the collected produce on Monday morning. Items especially helpful include tomatoes, peppers, onions, cucumbers, squash, okra, herbs, and melons, and any fresh produce that does not require immediate refrigeration is welcome. For safe handling, wash hands thoroughly with soap and water before touching produce, rinse items with cool water only and allow them to dry, and deliver everything in clean containers while keeping it away from other surfaces.

On the historic grounds of Fort Omaha, a showcase of classic automobiles spanning 1900 to 1970 invites visitors to relive motoring’s early and mid century eras. From pioneer-era cars to beloved mid century favorites, this free community gathering highlights craftsmanship and automotive heritage. Spectators receive free admission and can also visit the General Crook House Museum at no cost. Attendees may vote for a favorite car, capture photos at a vintage themed photo area with classic cars and props, enjoy fare from a local food truck, and see awards presented during the show. Kayak Clean Up

Kayak Clean Up at Zorinsky Lake invites paddlers and shore-based helpers to care for local waters alongside Nebraska Game and Parks outdoor educators and partners. As part of a once-a-year, statewide cleanup coordinated across multiple locations, the goal is to remove a large amount of trash while fostering a strong sense of community. Trash bags and gloves are provided. A safety talk and basic instruction take place at the start. Participation is free. Attendees may bring their own kayak or borrow one, and land-based cleanup is an option as well. Due to a limited number of boats, registration is required to reserve a kayak. Kayaks are available to participants ages 10 and up on a first come, first served basis. Plan to meet at the Zorinsky Lake Trailhead parking lot on the north side of the lake. Food security remains a pressing need in the community, and this effort invites home gardeners to plant a bit extra and share their surplus harvest. In collaboration with Whispering Roots, donated fruits and vegetables will be used to prepare nourishing meals for local shelters, or shared directly with underserved neighborhoods. Gardeners can drop off extra produce Friday through Sunday during store hours, and Whispering Roots will collect the donations on Monday morning. Tomatoes, peppers, onions, cucumbers, squash, okra, herbs, and melons are especially helpful, and any fresh produce that does not require immediate refrigeration will be put to good use. To prepare donations, wash hands thoroughly with soap and water before handling produce, rinse items with cool water only and let them dry, then bring them in clean containers while keeping the food from touching other surfaces.

Ceramics Workshop: Clay Whistles

Take a guided walk with horticulture specialist Kyle Cippera through Polina Gardens, Lauritzen Gardens' first satellite site in Omaha's Old Market. Explore more than 150 trees and shrubs, 22,000 perennials, and four distinct garden areas while learning how this city block changed from a parking lot into a thriving green space. Designed by Piet Oudolf in collaboration with the landscape architecture and design firm James Corner Field Operations, the tour follows the garden’s timeline from early planning and design to construction and planting. Attendees are encouraged to bring a camera, with time available for photography and self-guided exploration. The cost is $20, and garden members receive 20 percent off.

The 5th Annual NOMAFEST at NOMA highlights Richie Love, a versatile multi-instrumentalist and vocalist. He performs across the full family of saxophones, as well as flute and other instruments, and is active as a composer, arranger, producer, teacher, and mentor. Love has led Saxworld Productions since 1985, with his first record released in 1987. His sound is rooted in jazz, blues, rhythm and blues, and funk. He is the youngest son of saxophonist Preston Love, who collaborated with artists including Count Basie, Billie Holiday, Marvin Gaye, and the Jackson 5, and served as Motown’s first West Coast orchestra leader and contractor in the 1960s.

Monarch Tagging - FREE Drop-in Program

Watch monarch conservation in action during a garden program focused on tagging these remarkable migrants. Experts from the AAZK Omaha Chapter will be at the Quinn Oasis and Amphitheater to demonstrate how butterflies are carefully captured, tagged, and released. The tiny tags help researchers follow migration routes to Mexico, analyze survival, and better understand the challenges monarchs encounter. Benson American Legion Family Post #112 Omaha, Nebraska

7th ANNUAL REMEMBRANCE RUN

The Benson American Legion Riders Chapter #112 presents the seventh annual Remembrance Run, a day focused on honoring service at the Benson American Legion Post inside VFW Post #2503. Participants are welcome in any type of vehicle, from motorcycles to family cars, trucks, and SUVs. Registration is available at $20 for a single participant and $10 for a passenger, and each sign-up includes a Thank A Veteran patch. Activities include raffle items priced at $5 per ticket or five for $20, a 50/50 raffle, and prizes for the best poker hand ($150) and the worst ($50). Event gear such as R.E.D. Seymour Smith Disc Golf Course

LRLS: Session 2, week 8

Session 2, week 8 of this competitive, PDGA-sanctioned women’s disc golf league brings the traveling series to Seymour Smith Disc Golf Course. The series spans nine weeks and rotates among courses within roughly 25 miles of the Omaha area, offering a consistent competitive setting for players each week. League nights are typically scheduled on Tuesdays during the season, and start times may vary. Across the series, each player’s top three scores are averaged to determine payouts. At the conclusion of each series, the top two finishers in every division receive payouts, while weekly pay-to-play participants are not eligible for series awards. Payouts are distributed electronically, and participants will be asked to share their preferred delivery method at the end of the session. Participation requires a UDisc account for league management and live scoring. Costs are $30 for the full nine-week session or $5 for a single week.

Set within Rockbrook Village in Omaha, this two-day outdoor juried visual art fair brings together 120 artists from across the country and welcomes more than 40,000 visitors from around the Midwest. Surrounded by an urban shopping center filled with locally owned boutiques, restaurants, and neighborhood businesses, the event celebrates creativity across many mediums and includes activities that appeal to both exhibitors and attendees. Guests can enjoy live music, connect with local creative nonprofits, and take advantage of free admission and free parking. 142nd German Day- Oktoberfest

Experience the 142nd German Day Oktoberfest, the longest running and oldest German festival in Nebraska, at the German-American Society. Indoor and outdoor stages feature live music and traditional dance alongside hearty food, desserts, and imported beer. Expect homemade brats, schnitzel, roast pork and chicken, traditional sauerkraut and hot German potato salad, plus sweet finishes like torte from the Torte Haus or a Bavarian pretzel with the festival’s cheese sauce. A variety of German import beers will be available, and original imported glassware can be purchased. Entertainment includes Festhaus Musikanten from Kansas City, the Barry Boyce Band, Ken Janek Orchestra, Happy Players, Polka Police, and Rip Tide Refugees. Inside, see the Heimat Tänzer and the club’s mixed chorus, the Sängerchor. An official keg tapping and opening ceremony will be accompanied by Die Singenden Wanderer. Young visitors can enjoy children’s games, entertainment, and face painting. Free parking is available both days with a shuttle from King of Kings Church to the fest, and an Uber and Lyft station will be set up in the north parking lot. The German-American Heritage Museum will also be open.

Midwest Chingona Fest 2026

At Stinson Park, the Midwest’s women-led Latina festival spotlights ambition, creativity, and cultura with a proud chingona spirit. It welcomes women, children, and men of all ages to celebrate the women shaping their communities, drawing thousands each year and uplifting more than 200 businesses, artists, and performers across the region. Highlights include a Chingona Awards celebration, more than 60 vendors, food trucks, photo opportunities, micheladas, an all-women performance lineup, and showcases of women artists and entrepreneurs... mujeres turning their sueños into something powerful. General admission is $20 for ages 13 and up, kids 4 to 12 are $5, and children 3 and under are free.
