    Preservation Hall Jazz Band

The Music Hall, 28 Chestnut St, Portsmouth · verified Aug 30
    See details

Preservation Hall Jazz Band brings the ever-evolving spirit of New Orleans to the stage, celebrating a living tradition carried forward for over six decades. The ensemble reflects the city’s role as a meeting place for global sounds and cultures, honoring its heritage while propelling the music into the present. Their album So It Is showcases this momentum, tracing a musical line from Afro-Cuban roots through kinship with the Afrobeat of Fela Kuti and the fiery explorations of Pharoah Sanders and John Coltrane, then linking to trailblazing artists they have encountered on major festival stages from Coachella to Newport. Along the way they have performed alongside legends such as Stevie Wonder, Elvis Costello, and the Grateful Dead as well as modern headliners including Beck, The Foo Fighters, My Morning Jacket, and the Black Keys. Presented with support from Music Series sponsors McFarland Hyundia, Raka Creative, and 92.5 The River.

Johnny Mullenax w/ Dave Hunter & The Seven Hundred

The Press Room, 77 Daniel St, Portsmouth · verified Aug 30
    See details

At The Press Room, Johnny Mullenax teams up with Dave Hunter & The Seven Hundred for an evening of boundary-blurring roots music. Mullenax fuses bluegrass, country, and groove into a lively, genre-crossing sound. A Tulsa native raised in a musical family, he picked up guitar at five and has chased new ideas ever since, from festival adventures to playing in a live hip hop backing band. His influences range from AC/DC and The Ramones to John Coltrane and Parliament, and his guiding principle is to explore different styles rather than stick to just one. Dave Hunter & The Seven Hundred, based along the Maine and New Hampshire seacoast, bring a punchy mix of alt-country, roots-rock, and amped-up Americana. The lineup features lead singer, guitarist, and songwriter Dave Hunter with Chris Kelly on guitar and vocals, Steve Barlock on bass and vocals, and Joe Welsh on drums and vocals. Their debut LP, Tamp That Fever Down, includes songs such as It Made the Greatest Sound, Chicken Little’s Bones, Leaving Westbrook, Hey, Gina, and Got a Favor. This all-ages show has tickets priced at $15 in advance and $20 on the day of the event.
