Downtown Haddonfield marks America’s 250th birthday with a full day of hometown festivities. It begins with an Independence Day parade featuring classic cars, community groups, and local organizations as patriotic spirit fills Kings Highway between Chestnut Street and the High School. As the celebration continues, the heart of town transforms into a large block party, with Kings Highway stretching into a festival zone between Haddon Avenue and the PATCO bridge. Markeim Art Center offers a four-week cartooning series for young creators ages 7 to 12. Guided by a working cartoonist and local elementary art teacher, participants build core drawing skills and then apply them to craft expressive characters, distinctive settings, and clear, engaging comic panels. Beginners are welcome, and the focus is on helping each student tell an original story through pictures. The class is taught by Zack “Zap” Brandinelli, known to students as Mr. Z. He teaches art at the elementary and middle school levels in Maple Shade, New Jersey, apprenticed with a comic book artist in high school, and earned an illustration degree from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. His interests include sequential storytelling and cartooning across many mediums, with a specialty in drawing and digital illustration plus an interest in small scale sculpture. He continues to teach, take commissions, and work toward self publishing a book featuring his own characters.

Young creatives ages 9 to 14 can dive into a three week drawing series that builds confidence and essential skills in a welcoming setting. Through guided practice, students will learn to notice shapes, lines, and patterns, then apply those observations to draw people, animals, landscapes, and imagined scenes. Lessons introduce key techniques such as shading, working with proportion, and planning strong compositions while using pencils, markers, and other drawing tools. Each meeting features a new project that strengthens fine motor control and encourages personal expression. All supplies are included. The class is led by instructor Kristen Davila and is well suited for beginners as well as kids who already love to sketch.

At Markeim Haddonfield, tweens and teens explore the foundations of comics, graphic novels, and digital design in a beginner friendly class. Designed for ages 10 and older, the series covers character creation, storyboarding, panel layouts, speech bubbles, and other visual storytelling skills using hand drawn or digital artwork. Participants may bring a personal device to work with free tools such as Canva, and a simple animation is created using the Wick Editor. Whether superheroes, everyday life, or fantasy are your inspiration, the focus is on turning ideas into clear, illustrated narratives one panel at a time. No experience required. Taught by Ms. Kim.

A flexible, four week art series for children ages 2 to 6 features short, engaging activities led by Markeim teaching artist and art therapy certificate holder Erinn Davies. Sessions are held in a spacious gallery with plenty of natural light and focus on nurturing creativity while supporting sensory exploration and motor skill development. This is a caregiver and child experience, so parents, guardians, grandparents, or nannies stay on site and take part. Comfortable clothing is recommended because little artists may get messy.

Enjoy a paint and sip experience aboard the historic Battleship NJ, with step-by-step guidance from artists, tapas, and views of the Philadelphia skyline. No art experience is required as you personalize a Philly-inspired 12 inch 3D wood sign to take home at the end. Choose one project from Philadelphia Skyline, Ring the Bell Phanatic, Liberty Bell Love, or Stars & Stripes Welcome. The cost is $58 per person and includes one 12 inch 3D wood sign, all painting supplies, guided instruction, and tapas in a relaxed setting. Wine, beer, and soft drinks will be available for purchase, and no outside alcohol is permitted. After the painting session, guests may remain aboard for drinks and mingling.
