    This is a Haunted House*

    4904 4th St NW, Albuquerque · verified Oct 11
    See details

An immersive blend of haunted attraction, live theater, and puzzle solving invites audiences to step into the story. From ShortTerror Productions, the team behind Quarantine, participants are cast as background performers in a century old house, starting with an orientation that gradually reveals hidden layers. The question hangs over every scene... can they slip out in time for a Frontier run, or will the house keep them for ages? Quarantine began in the early 2000s with UNM Theatre students, including Flynn and Rutherford, and has explored many storylines since. This chapter marks the first time the experience unfolds inside an actual haunted house. Co-directors Herrera and Rutherford, longtime contributors to the company, are leading together for the first time. They met in an improv class at The Box and have collaborated on several projects, bringing backgrounds in stand-up, improv, and acting to shape a sharp comedy and horror mix. Attendees do more than watch... they take on roles that influence the action. The creators aim for a half hour packed with big laughs and startling scares in quick succession. For those who want to turn up the intensity, two special blood bath splash nights are planned.

    This is a Haunted House*

    4904 4th St NW, Albuquerque · verified Oct 11
    See details

An immersive blend of haunted attraction, live theater, and escape-style challenges places attendees inside the story. From the team behind Quarantine, ShortTerror Productions casts guests as brand new extras in a century-old house, where orientation quickly turns uncanny. As the truth of the place surfaces, the question becomes whether anyone can get out in time for Frontier or remain bound to the house for ages. Born from a group of UNM Theatre students in the early 2000s, including Flynn and Rutherford, this evolving project has explored multiple narratives and, for the first time, unfolds inside a literal haunted home. Both co-directors have contributed to past versions and are stepping into directing roles together for the first time. Herrera and Rutherford met in an improv class at The Box and have collaborated on several projects since. Their backgrounds in stand-up, improvisation, and acting shape a comedy-and-horror crossover that makes the audience part of the action rather than passive observers. The experience runs about thirty minutes and is crafted to toggle between big laughs and sharp scares. For those eager to push things further, two blood-bath splash nights offer an intensified take on the show.

This weekend experience blends the romance of rail travel with the creative momentum of the Short Storyathon, inviting storytellers to draft on the move and work toward publication. Participants board Amtrak’s Southwest Chief at Albuquerque’s historic Alvarado Transportation Center, traveling to Las Vegas, New Mexico along a route often celebrated for sweeping high desert vistas and the wide open landscapes of Northern New Mexico. The journey serves as the first focused writing sprint, with the passing scenery setting the tone. Upon arrival, the group walks to the Castañeda Hotel, Fred Harvey’s first trackside property built in 1898. Inside, twenty-two distinct rooms furnished with Victorian antiques carry names inspired by animals or Fred Harvey historic sites, providing an evocative setting for the next chapters of writing. Tickets are limited.
