Bring your own pumpkins to break apart or drop them off for others to process. Try swinging a wooden maul, aim for the spiked target, or slice them into pieces. Beyond the smashing, there are treats like cider and donuts, face painting, a selfie spot for family photos, pumpkin bowling, and game tables featuring Mancala, Checkers, and Jenga. Edible pumpkins will be set aside to feed animals at Windrake Farm in Fultonville, NY. Carved pumpkins and other natural decorations will go to Grow Amsterdam’s Compost Works, which keeps organic material out of the landfill, helps cut greenhouse gases, and produces compost for community gardens in Amsterdam. After appearing in the Caffè Lena @ SPAC series, Jordanian singer songwriter Farah Siraj returns to Caffè Lena with a new program that intertwines Arabic traditions and flamenco in an intimate setting. Her forthcoming album, Miel y Limón, produced by Javier Limón, a multiple Grammy recipient with ten awards, shapes the evening’s sound by uniting flamenco’s guitar and pulse with the lyricism and heritage of Arabic music. Touches of jazz and her dynamic voice bring it all together, creating music that feels both timeless and modern, close and expansive. Siraj has taken her voice from Jordan to renowned stages including Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center, as well as global forums such as the United Nations, the World Economic Forum and the Nobel Peace Prize Forum. Her songs move across borders, exploring love, longing, resilience and the connections shared among cultures. She performs with her trio for an evening of virtuosic vocals, flamenco guitar, percussion, storytelling and improvisation. Rather than placing Arabic and Spanish traditions side by side, the players let them converse, shifting from delicate and haunting moments to fiery, rhythmic passages. The title Miel y Limón, translated as Honey and Lemon, reflects the project’s contrasts of sweetness and bite, vulnerability and strength, tradition and reinvention. SLOC Musical Theater is holding auditions for Company, the groundbreaking musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a book by George Furth, originally produced and directed on Broadway by Harold Prince with orchestrations by Jonathan Tunick. The theater fosters an inclusive, welcoming environment that reflects the diversity of Schenectady and encourages actors of all backgrounds, including LGBTQIA+, BIPOC, and all gender identities, to be seen for every role. There are no tuition or participation fees for artists of any age, and all roles are open to performers 18 and older. Company follows Bobby and a circle of married friends and girlfriends in New York City as they navigate connection, commitment, and the search for genuine intimacy and friendship. Marta, Kathy, and April represent different stages of Bobby’s romantic life, and dance experience is helpful for these roles. Additional vocalists may be cast as a Vocal Minority that supports select numbers with tight harmonies in a style associated with the era, and these singers may appear onstage as part of the action. Rehearsals are planned for select weeknights and Sunday afternoons, beginning with a full-cast read-through, and the schedule includes required participation in production milestones such as tech week, all performances, and strike.
