Yalla Habibi presents a weekend in Buffalo spotlighting Soumaya MaRose and Jill Parker, curated by Samana and Kenzie, with workshops and a gala that celebrate Moroccan dance, raqs sharqi, and fusion. The weekend opens with a small-group performance intensive led by Jill Parker, limited to fifteen dancers who prepare her Ismaaouni choreography in advance through live and recorded Zoom sessions. An in-person rehearsal in Buffalo brings the piece together, and the group performs alongside Jill in the gala show. The evening also features an introduction to Moroccan dance and culture with Soumaya, exploring four traditional forms through technique and a close look at the historical and socioeconomic forces that shape them. Saturday centers on growth grounded in tradition with Jill, emphasizing clarity, healthy mechanics, muscular awareness, strong isolations, emotional honesty, refined musicality, and dynamic control through focused drills and combinations. Later, Soumaya’s darbuka and rhythm session examines how regional identity is expressed through percussion, with cultural context, performance settings, and intricate pelvic work that challenges common westernized interpretations. The day concludes with a gala show at Elmwood Commons Theater featuring Soumaya and Jill. Tickets are $20. Sunday begins with a light brunch and conversation, with espresso drinks prepared by barista Jacob. Soumaya then leads a henna ceremony workshop that highlights the Citadin North Moroccan ritual and its symbolism, with comparisons to Amazigh roots. The final session with Jill invites dancers into the subtle power of slinky fusion, using heart lift, clear frame, and minimal movement to deepen presence. Slow, fluid drills, spinal articulation, grounded walking patterns, and dynamic contrast work help cultivate seamless transitions and a serpentine flow. All workshops take place at Elmwood Commons. Learn hands-on bleeding control skills in a practical class focused on what to do in the first critical moments after an injury. Participants are taught how to identify life-threatening bleeding, apply firm direct pressure, and correctly place and use a tourniquet so they can respond quickly and with confidence. Uncontrolled bleeding is the leading preventable cause of death after trauma, and research shows that using a tourniquet early can reduce the risk of death by about half. The fee is $25 per participant.
