Boyce with a full program of learning, art, and live music. The North Mississippi Blues Workshop is limited to 20 participants and carries a $150 fee, and attendees are asked to bring a practice amp. Instruction comes from Lightnin Malcolm, R.L.’s longtime second guitarist and drummer whose credits include the Grammy-nominated Roll & Tumble and the BMA-nominated Boogie with R.L. Boyce Live, along with work with Cedric Burnside, R.L. Burnside, Junior Kimbrough, Paul “Wine” Jones, the Mississippi All Stars, and Tab Benoit; Robert Kimbrough Sr. (CPSB), the youngest son of Junior Kimbrough, who will pass on Cotton Patch Soul Blues guitar approaches; harmonica player and bandleader Brian Hurd of Daddy Long Legs and Howlin’ Hurd and the House Rockers, an artist with international touring experience and a Hohner endorsement; and Brother Tito Deler, known as Harlem Slim, a National resonator guitarist shaped by the Delta tradition and mentored by R.L. Boyce, Jimmy “Duck” Holmes, and Leo “Bud” Welch, with appearances in Southern jukes and at festivals such as the Bentonia Blues Festival. A free pop up exhibit presents a multi projector video collage of Boyce’s life created by Brooklyn artist Amy Verdon, a close collaborator who released two of his recordings including a BMA-nominated live album, produced the R.L. Boyce Picnic for several years, and put forward his nomination for the NEA National Heritage Fellowship, while a stage banner by Detroit and Mississippi graffiti artist Michael Carter adds to the visuals. The celebration culminates in a free juke joint jam that embraces the welcoming, improvisational spirit of the original venues where Black communities gathered for music and fellowship, with special guests including Harmony Love Bartz, Dave Dawson, Tucky Parkis, and Ms. Slide Guitar Wendy Jean Garrison, along with additional guests.
